This is how we do it: ‘Since menopause, my sex drive has disappeared’ | Life and style

Ali, 58 double quotation markAny pressure to have sex doesn’t come from James – it comes from within, from a fear of complete loss I used to really enjoy sex, but since menopause my drive has completely disappeared. I just don’t feel like a sexual being any more. The problem isn’t that I’m too dry – it’s more mental. I don’t even enjoy kissing, touching or oral as much as I used to. Although I feel a huge amount of grief over the loss of my sexuality, I honestly couldn’t care less if I never have sex again. Any pressure to have sex doesn’t come from James – it comes from within, from a fear of complete loss. I still have some hope, but I’ve always been a glass-half-empty kind of person, shy and self-conscious. When I met James at work eight-and-a-half years ago, I actually wanted sex more than he did, and because I lacked confidence I immediately assumed he didn’t find me attractive, or that something was wrong with me. double quotation mark …

Why ‘Leaving Neverland’ Disappeared from Streaming

Why ‘Leaving Neverland’ Disappeared from Streaming

Leaving Neverland, a documentary by Dan Reed about two adult men who allege that as children they were groomed and sexually abused by Michael Jackson, aired in two parts on HBO in 2019. It was nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards and won one, for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, as well as awards from the Producers Guild of America and the Television Critics Association. But if the impending release of Antoine Fuqua’s Michael—a new feature film about Jackson’s life that does not mention Leaving Neverland‘s subjects James Safechuck and Wade Robson, or any of the other allegations of sexual abuse raised against Jackson before or after his death in 2009—has made you want to seek out Reed’s film for context, you’re out of luck. Leaving Neverland is not currently available to stream on HBO Max or any other streaming service in the US, and only short clips can be found on YouTube. (Both installments seem to be available in full on this web site, with a content-obscuringly giant watermark that can be removed with …

‘The future disappeared for me’ : NPR

TERRY GROSS, HOST: This is FRESH AIR. I’m Terry Gross. Existential dread – that’s what my guest, Annabelle Gurwitch, says her new memoir is really about. It’s the kind of dread she experienced after getting her diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer. She got the news in 2020 in the early days of the COVID lockdown. To make matters worse, she was separated from her husband, and they were divorcing. Odds are she would’ve been dead by now, but she has a form of cancer that’s responsive to a new form of targeted therapy that turns off the gene that has gone rogue. But the cancer eventually outsmarts the drug, often in as little as a year and a half. And then it’s on to radiation and chemo and a ticking clock. Though the drug is still working for Gurwitch after five years, the future remains uncertain. Over those five years, she’s become a patient advocate, become a mentor to other cancer patients through a program in which she was mentored, and she’s involved with …

Mexico says only about one-third of 130,000 people listed as ‘disappeared’ can be confirmed as missing.

MEXICO CITY — The goal, say Mexican authorities, was to bring clarity to one of the nation’s most explosive questions: What happened to the more than 130,000 people officially listed as “disappeared”? Their faces are pasted on walls and lampposts across Mexico, and demonstrators regularly hoist banners demanding the return of loved ones whose names are memorialized in chants. Now, a yearlong government study has sparked a contentious new round of debate about the disappeared. The review concludes that the 130,000 number is highly inflated and includes tens of thousands who may be alive — or ended up on the list without having been properly identified in the first place. Other names are probably duplicates, the government says, while some people may have gone off the grid voluntarily for personal reasons. Human rights activists and relatives of the missing quickly denounced the report as a cover-up — the latest attempt to “disappear the disappeared.” “This report is a farce, a joke,” said Raúl Servín, part of a citizens group that searches for the missing in the western …

Leqaa Kordia returned to ICE detention after lawyers say she was ‘disappeared’

(RNS) — After being hospitalized and unreachable by her lawyers and family for three days, Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Muslim Palestinian woman who has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for nearly a year, was discharged and returned to detention on Monday (Feb. 9). Kordia’s lawyers said in a statement that the Department of Homeland Security denied multiple requests for answers about where she was hospitalized and her condition for over 72 hours, raising concerns about the agency’s transparency and medical care. “While we are relieved Leqaa is out of the hospital, we still have no idea what her medical condition is and what happened to her the past three days,” said Hamzah Abushaban, Kordia’s cousin, in a statement. “Now she is forced back to the nightmarish conditions of ICE detention that put her in the hospital.” Kordia’s legal team said it called dozens of hospitals near the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas, over the weekend, but only learned of her location from a journalist to whom DHS had released that detail. …

Tales From the Neanderthal Nights: Why They Really Disappeared

Tales From the Neanderthal Nights: Why They Really Disappeared

In an interesting short essay at The Conversation last month, University of Durham Paul Pettitt observed, Despite the fact that we know that Neanderthals were capable of producing jewellery and using coloured pigments, there has been much objection to the notion that they explored deep caves and left art on the walls. But recent work has confirmed beyond doubt that they did. “Were Neanderthals capable of making art?, October 28, 2025 Why was there “much objection?” Did archaeologists feel that way about the Rosetta Stone? King Tut’s tomb? Not that I’ve heard. Pettitt doesn’t quite spell out the nature of the problem but maybe we can help. Briefly, this echo from the past (Neanderthal as artist) is an unwelcome one in some quarters. As I noted here earlier, many archaeologists have long assumed that Neanderthals were less mentally evolved than modern humans. They are quite sure that there has been a long, slow, gradual, and completely natural Ascent of Man from mud to mind. For any such Ascent, someone has to be the subhuman and …
