AI Doomsday Warnings Distract From More Imminent AI Concerns

Authored by Daniel Nuccio via The Brownstone Institute, AI is everywhere. It’s getting incorporated into everything. That’s simply progress, we’re told. And therefore we need to embrace it, lest we look like a Luddite and let China win (whatever that means). Yet, simultaneously, a lot of people also are afraid because of AI. Very afraid. And sometimes, we’re told that we should be afraid too. However, in public discourse surrounding AI, there often can be a lack of detail regarding what specifically we’re supposed to be afraid of. Sometimes it is not even clear what is meant by the term “AI.” Technically speaking, as I have touched on previously, one could argue (as some older computer scientists do) that AI is an umbrella term for a family of algorithms based in math that sometimes dates back more than a half-century.  Practically speaking, numerous programs we’ve been living with for years like Google Maps and Amazon’s recommender system can be thought of as AI despite their lack of novelty. Yet, in public discourse, the term AI tends to …

Apps to distract you from the endless cycle of doomscrolling

Apps to distract you from the endless cycle of doomscrolling

You open your phone to check the time or a quick message. The next thing you know, an hour has passed and you’ve scrolled through endless celebrity drama, cat videos, awful news stories, influencer rants, and whatever else the algorithm decided to throw at you. Even though you probably don’t want to keep wasting your time and energy on this mind-numbing content, you do it again the next day. Doomscrolling, the habit of spending excessive amounts of time consuming content on social media, has become incredibly widespread. A survey from last year found that 64% of Americans say they doomscroll.  Researchers have warned that doomscrolling can negatively affect several aspects of your well-being, including your mental health and attention span. Spending long periods scrolling can lead to brain fatigue, difficulty focusing, and disrupted sleep. And if a lot of the content you’re consuming is negative or stressful, it can leave you feeling disheartened, anxious, and emotionally drained.  It’s hard to break the cycle of doomscrolling, but there are plenty of apps that provide content that’s …

Putin Seeks To Distract UK With Middle East War, Minister Warns

Putin Seeks To Distract UK With Middle East War, Minister Warns

Vladimir Putin wants the UK to be distracted by the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, according to the British defence secretary. John Healey revealed how British forces have uncovered “increased Russian activity in the Atlantic, north of the UK” while giving a statement from Downing Street. He said a nuclear-powered attack submarine and two specialist submarines from Russia’s main directorate for deep sea research were detected in the Atlantic Ocean. These ships were in the UK’s exclusive economic zone. It’s not clear what they were threatening to do, but Healey pointed out that Britain has undersea fibre optic cables which are key for the UK’s digital communications. He claimed these vessels were all directed by the Russian president to “conduct hybrid activities against the UK and our allies, specifically around critical undersea infrastructure”. He said the submarines are meant to survey underwater infrastructure “during peacetime and sabotage it in conflict”. The UK military has been tracking these vessels by sea and air in a month-long mission with allies. The attack submarine – since discovered …

Gaza’s ceasefire had some momentum. Now, some fear a new war will distract the world

Gaza’s ceasefire had some momentum. Now, some fear a new war will distract the world

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Some Palestinians say they fear the widening war sparked by U.S. and Israeli attacks against Iran could overshadow the fragile situation in Gaza, just over a week after U.S. President Donald Trump rallied billions of dollars in pledges for the territory’s reconstruction and tried to nudge a ceasefire forward. Residents say they are scared of neglect and deprivation, with Israel in the wake of the weekend strikes closing all crossings into their shattered territory of over 2 million people. COGAT, the Israeli military body overseeing civilian affairs in Gaza, has closed crossings into the territory and frozen the entrance and exit of humanitarian workers because, it says, the crossings cannot not be safely operated under fire. It said crossings would reopen as soon as the security situation allows. It said that Palestinians there have enough food stockpiled, though some organizations warned they could soon run out of supplies. Palestinians told The Associated Press they were rushing to markets, haunted by memories of painful food scarcity last year under months …

Epstein files: Clinton hearings ‘political theatre to distract public from Trump’

Former President Bill Clinton is testifying Friday before members of Congress investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a day after Clinton’s wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, sat with lawmakers for her own deposition. However, according to Ian Reifowitz, history professor at SUNY-Empire State University, the hearings a mainly “political theatre” designed to distract the American public from Epstein’s links with Donald Trump. Saturday Night Live”: Trump throws self awards show to distract from ICE’s “freaks and psychos

“Saturday Night Live” had to put a button on a truly awful week in their cold open. Even their own version of Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, was feeling a little squeamish. So, they opened the Teyana Taylor-hosted episode with a big, gilded distraction: The 1st Annual Trumps. The fake awards show celebrated Trump’s love of meaningless awards and unearned hardware, with Johnson explaining the inspiration for the bash at the top of the sketch. “After that lady whose name I already forget gave me her Nobel Prize, I thought, ‘I need more awards,’” he said. “And after what all my little freaks and psychos in ICE have been doing, I need more distractions.” Trump toasted his crowd of cronies (“So many awful, terrible people in the house”) before diving into a ceremony heavy on self-congratulation. Accepting one of his many awards, Johnson’s Trump put a spin on Sally Field’s iconic Oscar acceptance speech. “I love me, I really love me. I have so few people to thank. Myself and of course the …
