The arc of human history is toward cooperation, not division

Sign up for The Great Progression: 2025-2050 on Substack. In the early 1980s, I hitchhiked from London to Cape Town at the tip of South Africa. The overland trip took more than six months, and I traveled about 11,000 miles — almost half the circumference of the Earth. I dropped down through Europe, crossed into Morocco via the Strait of Gibraltar, and then traveled across North Africa. From Egypt, I followed the Nile all the way to its source in East Africa before making my way down to South Africa, which was still under apartheid at the time. I was no newbie to hitchhiking. Since high school, I had hitched rides across the United States numerous times, traveling from coast to coast on many of the nation’s major interstate freeways. Hitching was also the main way I moved between my home in the Midwest and my university on the East Coast. I loved hitchhiking because it offered a fantastic way to get to know an amazing cross section of people from many different classes and races and …

‘Trump abandoned us’: Ceasefire sparks anger, fear, division among Iranians

‘Trump abandoned us’: Ceasefire sparks anger, fear, division among Iranians

On February 28, a new war began after Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran, killing several high-ranking military figures, scientists and political officials, including Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Iran launched large-scale attacks against Israel and Arab countries hosting US military bases, including Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan and Oman. Beyond military targets, both sides also struck civilian infrastructure, including gas and oil facilities, power stations, water treatment plants, steel and aluminium factories, roads, railways and bridges, as well as universities, airports, schools, hotels, stadiums and residential areas, particularly in Israel. Avalanche Beat the Blues 3-1 to Clinch Central Division and Top Seed in the Western Conference

Avalanche Beat the Blues 3-1 to Clinch Central Division and Top Seed in the Western Conference

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Valeri Nichushkin scored twice and Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Tuesday night to clinch the Central Division and the top seed in the Western Conference. It is the third time in five seasons, and first since 2023, that the Avalanche finished as the top team in the conference. Martin Necas also scored and Scott Wedgewood made 18 saves for Colorado, which has earned points in eight of its last 11 games. Wedgewood was shaken up midway through the third period after Philip Broberg made contact with him after being tripped by Sam Malinski. Wedgewood was driven awkwardly into the post and stayed down for several minutes, but remained in the game. Robert Thomas scored and Joel Hofer made 34 saves for the Blues, whose slim playoff hope took a hit with the loss. Colorado outshot St. Louis 17-3 in the first period and had a two-goal lead as a result. Nichushkin gave the Avalanche the lead with 3:49 left in the first and Necas made it 2-0 …

What the government’s plan for social cohesion gets wrong about community division

What the government’s plan for social cohesion gets wrong about community division

The government’s new social cohesion action plan, Protecting What Matters, is frank about its urgency: “Social cohesion is … not just a good in and of itself. It is also a vital front in the resilience of our national security.” The 2024 Southport attacks and subsequent disorder, rising religious hate crime, unrest over migration policy and domestic extremism have all forced the issue of community division. Yet the government’s answer, built around integration, interfaith dialogue and civic ceremonies, mistakes the symptom for the disease. “Cohesion” is vague, unmeasurable and elastic enough to mean whatever the government of the day needs it to mean. People describe the places they love as close-knit and safe, not “cohesive”. A better framework would be community resilience: the measurable capacity of neighbourhoods to absorb shocks, resist divisive narratives and recover from crises. You cannot integrate people who are isolated, impoverished and without the infrastructure to bring them together. COVID laid bare what the evidence already showed: communities with stronger social infrastructure and higher levels of social capital demonstrated greater resilience …

Arkansas’ John Calipari Becomes 5th Division I Men’s Coach to Reach 900 Victories

Arkansas’ John Calipari Becomes 5th Division I Men’s Coach to Reach 900 Victories

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Arkansas coach John Calipari became the fifth Division I men’s basketball coach to reach 900 career wins with the Razorbacks’ 88-84 victory over Missouri on Saturday. Arkansas (23-8, 13-5 SEC) delivered Calipari the milestone victory without Southeastern Conference leading scorer Darius Acuff Jr., who missed the game with an undisclosed injury. “If it meant anything, do you think Darius would have been playing today?” Calipari said. “I would have played him. That stuff, when you do this a long time, that’s the kind of stuff that happens if parents entrust you with their child.” Calipari joins Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino and Roy Williams as the only coaches with 900 Division I victories. Calipari, at 67, is the second-youngest coach to win 900 games behind Krzyzewski, who reached the milestone at the age of 64. Calipari is also the third-fastest coach to reach the 900-win mark, accomplishing the feat in his 1,185th career game. Calipari has coached five Final Four teams and won a national championship with Kentucky in 2012. …

Rivian has a new performance division but for crazy off-road adventures

Rivian has a new performance division but for crazy off-road adventures

Rivian just announced a new division within the company focused on feats of performance, but with a uniquely Rivian twist, aiming for extreme off-road stunts instead of your standard circuit racing. There is a long tradition within the automotive industry of automakers having divisions dedicated to extracting maximum performance out of their vehicles. Fiat’s Abarth, Mercedes’ AMG, Nissan’s Nismo, and Ford’s RS, among many others. The electric startups, so far, have not had such a division. But that’s true no longer: Rivian has just officially launched a performance brand, but with in keeping with the Rivian ethos, it has an off-road twist. It’s called the Rivian Adventure Department, or RAD, and Rivian says it’s for “Exploring what our vehicles can do, and how much fun you can have.” Advertisement – scroll for more content While Rivian has only made this formal announcement of RAD as an official “skunkworks” division today, RAD isn’t really brand new. Rivian has already focused on sending its cars on various adventures over its lifetime, including before the R1T was even …
