Keir Starmer's Time In Downing Street Is Coming To An End – But Who Comes Next?

Keir Starmer's Time In Downing Street Is Coming To An End – But Who Comes Next?

Keir Starmer’s rivals are circling Keir Starmer has insisted he “won’t walk away” from Downing Street, but it soon won’t be his decision to make. A Labour leadership contest is coming, after which the prime minister will be forced out of No.10. If there was any doubt at all, then they will be extinguished next Thursday, when HuffPost UK understand the next tranche of Peter Mandelson documents will be released. They will not reflect well on Starmer. The only questions that remain are when he will walk out of the famous black door for the final time as PM, and who his replacement will be. For now, the PM and his allies remain defiant – although the radio silence from Starmer himself in recent days speaks to the turmoil which is engulfing him and the entire Downing Street operation. Instead, it has been up to loyal Starmer lieutenants like communities secretary Steve Reed to go out and defend the leader.  “Keir Starmer is the elected leader of the Labour Party and the elected prime minister …

Downing Street Insists Keir Starmer Will Stay Prime Minister

Downing Street Insists Keir Starmer Will Stay Prime Minister

Keir Starmer will remain prime minister for years despite mounting speculation over his future, Downing Street has insisted. The prime minister’s spokesman said the PM “will continue to lead the government throughout this parliament and beyond”. His comments came amid claims Starmer could be forced to set out a timetable for his departure after the May 7 elections, when Labour are expected to suffer huge losses. Cabinet ministers have also publicly distanced themselves from the PM over the scandal surrounding his decision to make Peter Mandelson the UK’s ambassador to Washington. Asked if the prime minister was preparing to quit, his spokesman said: “He’s very focused on the job. He will continue to lead the government throughout this parliament and beyond. “He’s got a huge amount of work to do, the governments got a huge amount of work to do. “We’ve set out a significant programme of domestic reform, including bringing down NHS waiting lists, tackling the cost of living and investing in security and defence. That’s where the prime minister is fully focused.” Subscribe …

Downing Street fears panic at petrol pumps

Downing Street fears panic at petrol pumps

Sir Keir Starmer will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the cost-of-living crisis and how to prevent panic at the petrol pumps. Ministers will meet on Monday to hammer out a strategy to prevent panic buying at forecourts amid concern that motorists could bleed pumps dry despite ample supplies. The issue of fuel supplies to forecourts and how to manage any future shortage has emerged as a major concern for No 10. One source said the Government was grappling with “behavioural science’’ and studying the 2021 fuel-supply crisis – the first for two decades – which saw pumps run dry across the country after reports of a shortage of tanker drivers. While Britain produces more than enough petrol to cover demand, the bulk of diesel volumes come from imports, which could be disrupted as Iran continues to prevent shipping leaving the Persian Gulf. Ministers are said to be nervous about communicating any concerns about fuel supplies for fear of sparking a rush to the pumps. The source said: “Clearly we need to stay ahead of …

New Mandelson files lay bare what went wrong in Downing Street – POLITICO

The files show Mandelson asked for a £547,201 severance payment after his sacking (he got £75,000), and told the FCDO’s Chief People Officer Mark Power in September that his “chief concern” was arriving back with “maximum dignity and minimum media intrusion.” “[Labour MPs] are more preoccupied with the £500,000,” said a third Labour MP loyal to Starmer. “What kind of person asks for that?” But this is only one step on the road for Starmer’s No. 10, and for possible questions about the prime minister’s judgement. The government has yet to publish extensive WhatsApp and email communications between Mandelson and Starmer’s ministers and aides, not just about his appointment and dismissal but about broader politics, relationships and strategy. Downing Street also announced on Wednesday that it will review the separate national security vetting system. | Paul Ellis/AFP via Getty Images Wednesday’s files show the concern that the breadth of this planned publication — forced in a vote by the opposition Conservative Party — sparked in No. 10. As Starmer prepared to agree to the transparency …

Starmer’s staff cannot be ruled out of China Downing Street spying | UK | News

Starmer’s staff cannot be ruled out of China Downing Street spying | UK | News

China hacked the mobile phones of senior officials in Downing Street for several years, The Telegraph has reported. The spying operation is understood to have compromised senior members of the government, exposing their private communications to Beijing. State-sponsored hackers are known to have targeted the phones of some of the closest aides to Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak between 2021 and 2024. Breach went ‘right into the heart of Downing Street’ It is unclear whether the hack included the mobile phones of the prime ministers themselves, but one source with knowledge of the breach said it went “right into the heart of Downing Street.” Intelligence sources in the US indicated that the Chinese espionage operation, known as Salt Typhoon, was ongoing, raising the possibility that Sir Keir Starmer and his senior staff may also have been exposed. MI5 issued an “espionage alert” to Parliament in November about the threat of spying from the Chinese state. Sir Keir departs for China this week – the first visit by a British prime minister since Baroness …

Surrender Starmer may as well fly the white flag over Downing Street | Politics | News

Nick Ferrari says Starmer may as well dust off the white flag (Image: Shutterstock/Getty) If any of you happen to be going anywhere near Downing Street over the next few days, perhaps you’d be so kind as to have a quick look at the roof. Because surely after the shameful decisions put in the spotlight last week, the white flag of surrender must be fluttering in the Westminster breeze. To deal with the sell-outs chronologically: Let’s start with the unfathomable insanity concerning the giveaway of the Chagos islands to Mauritius. While the Bill may now been delayed due to a timely intervention by President Trump, the Prime Minister’s original decision still fits the pattern of surrender. The muddled thinking behind this act of near treachery seemed to be based on advice from government lawyers that not to proceed would upset the United Nations and risk breaching international treaties, none of which we are signed up to. Downing Street Slaps Down Donald Trump Over Afghanistan Claim

Downing Street Slaps Down Donald Trump Over Afghanistan Claim

Keir Starmer’s spokesperson hit back at Donald Trump over his claim that Nato troops stayed away from the frontlines while fighting in Afghanistan. The US president has sparked a row with allies after insisting the defence alliance has “never” helped America – despite clear evidence to the contrary. As the prime minister’s representative told reporters: “The president was wrong to diminish the role of Nato troops, including British forces, in Afghanistan. “Following the 9/11 attacks on the US, Article 5 of the Nato treaty was invoked for the first time and British forces served alongside American and other allied troops in sustained combat operations – 457 British service personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan and many more were wounded. “Many hundreds suffered life-changing injuries from their service, alongside the US and our allies in Afghanistan. “Their sacrifice and that of other Nato forces was made in the service of collective security and in response to an attack on our ally. “We are incredibly proud of our armed forces and their service and sacrifice will never …
