A Mormon drag queen in the Queen City

A Mormon drag queen in the Queen City

(RNS) — Being a drag queen is “freedom,” said Michael Wilson, a Cincinnati-area human resources administrator who entertains and raises money for charity as Molly Mormen. “When you’re in drag, you get to be who you are and just have fun. You’re going to poke fun at people in the audience and engage with them, you’re going to tell stories.” Wilson, 40, said some of those stories relate to growing up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in suburban Salt Lake City. Wilson had all the Mormon bona fides: He was “born in the covenant” to parents who’d been sealed for eternity in an LDS temple. As a young adult he went to the church’s flagship school, Brigham Young University, and served a full-time mission for two years.  He was particularly hoping such faithful missionary service would bring an answer to prayer: that God would “fix” him and make him not gay anymore. Though he wasn’t yet out to anyone, he had long understood that he was different. He …

Patagonia files trademark infringement lawsuit against drag performer: Pattie Gonia

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Outdoor clothing and gear retailer Patagonia is suing popular drag queen Pattie Gonia for trademark infringement, claiming that the play on its name, in addition to a similarity in branding, has caused “confusion and deception” among consumers. In court documents filed Wednesday in California federal court, seen by The Independent, Patagonia claimed that Pattie Gonia’s recent trademark application for the exclusive right to the brand PATTIE GONIA, which seeks to encompass their advocacy work, apparel, promoting public awareness of and motivational speaking services in support of environmental sustainability and LGBTQIA2S+ equality, and more, “compete directly with the products and advocacy upon which Patagonia built its PATAGONIA brand over the last fifty-three years.” “The trademark application reflects Pattie Gonia’s departure from discrete use of a …

Toyota is drag racing hydrogen-powered trucks in the Arizona desert

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Filling up a hydrogen tank is much like filling up a gas-powered car in both the basic experience and in the time it takes. That’s been a major barrier for EVs thus far; adding 20 minutes or more for each recharge on a road trip is not nearly as appealing as pulling up to a Chevron station and getting out of there in a few minutes. However, hydrogen hasn’t yet caught on as a large-scale solution largely due to funding, even though even the US Department of Energy says it has “several benefits over conventional combustion-based technologies currently used in many power plants and vehicles.” In December, Toyota announced its intention to amp up US hydrogen infrastructure by investing in FirstElement Fuel, the largest retail hydrogen fueling infrastructure provider in California. The automaker has spent the last 30 years researching and developing hydrogen fuel cells; in fact, Toyota has a full campus in Gardena, California, dedicated just to hydrogen …

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Winners on Show Changes After 18 Seasons

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Winners on Show Changes After 18 Seasons

RuPaul’s Drag Race has kicked off its eighteenth installment, crawling closer and closer to a milestone 20th season.  Premiering almost 17 years ago, the series has gone through plenty of changes as the franchise worked out its now polished structure: a batch of drag artists compete in weekly challenges; one queen earns a win for their performance; two queens land in the “bottom” of the competition and perform against one another in a lip sync for their life; and the winner of said lip sync stays in the running for the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar.  It’s a tried and true format that has remained steadfast over all 18 seasons, its three varying network homes and a plethora of international spinoffs. But in the early days of RuPaul’s Drag Race, before they snatched up 29 Emmy Awards, there was no preexisting framework for queens to reference going into the competition. They simply went into things blind, as all first-season reality TV contestants do.  “When we started, we had no blueprint,” season one winner BeBe …

Celebrate Pride Month at the best drag brunches in L.A.

Dating as far back as ancient Greek theater, drag is an undeniably legendary form of entertainment that’s touched nearly every corner of the world. Major U.S. cities have been host to drag performances for more than a century — beginning with underground ballrooms in the mid-19th century and evolving into everything from bingo to dance nights. More often than not these were evening events, frequented by the LGBTQ+ community and friends, and a rare opportunity for performers to have their talents seen and celebrated. Drag brunches flipped that model by bringing the art form to daytime audiences. In 2001, the now-nationwide Hamburger Mary’s franchise introduced the concept to Southern California. “A group of us drag queens would go to Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach on Sundays and hang out and have bottomless mimosas,” recalled Jewels Long Beach, executive director of entertainment at Hamburger Mary’s. “Because we were there all of the time, I was like, ‘We should start a drag show at brunch.’” Not long after, Hamburger Mary’s began hosting “SoCal’s only daytime drag show” — …
