The BBC dominated the Edinburgh TV Festival Awards 2026. On Thursday 27 August 2026, the BBC was named both Broadcaster of the Year and Public Service Broadcaster of the Year as the industry gathered to honour the past year on screen. Hosted by comedy duo Suzi Ruffell and Maisie Adam, the ceremony in Edinburgh saw the corporation lead the winners, while ITV Studios was named Production Group of the Year. The festival’s Head of Awards, Bianca Newby, thanked the hosts “for making it such a fun night” and congratulated “all this year’s winners and nominees”. Elsewhere, BBC Three’s What It Feels Like for a Girl was named Best Drama. The coming-of-age series, adapted from Paris Lees’s memoir, follows Byron from a small working-class town into Nottingham’s early-2000s underground club scene. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation has awarded $10 million to seven projects. Led by the Critical Materials Innovation Hub (CMI Hub), the projects will focus on rare earth elements, gallium, copper, and other critical materials. “These seven projects will leverage the Critical Materials Innovation Hub’s strong foundation of expertise to address key technical challenges involving heavy rare earth elements, gallium, copper, and other critical materials,” said Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson. “This work will unlock new production methods that strengthen domestic supply chains and ensure American manufacturers have access to the materials they need to compete and lead.” The selectees include projects from the following organisations: Case Western Reserve University: Process intensification enabled by chloride-based molten salt electrolysis for highly efficient heavy rare earth metal production Colorado School of Mines: Improving copper extraction from primary copper sulfides using hydro and bio-hydro metallurgical processes University of Arizona: A synergistic approach using nanobubbles, surfactants, and reactive oxygen species to enhance copper sulfide leaching FAST Metals: Creating new domestic sources of critical minerals: Gallium …

One of the great creative innovations America has given the world in the past 30 years is TV animation. That sounds like hyperbole, but it’s true. The Simpsons changed how we look at the American family (and current events). Rick and Morty changed how we looked at comedy and the tragedy behind it. (“Wubba lubba dub dub.” Also, current events.) South Park changed how we looked at each other (and current events). The problem is that those shows all started doing that a very long time ago. Rick and Morty is nine seasons in. South Park is 28. The Simpsons is 37 damn seasons deep. There are children who weren’t born when the series debuted who now have children who themselves are old enough to think Bart has got this whole life thing figured out. All three of those shows are nominated for outstanding animated program this year. So is Bob’s Burgers, which just completed its 20th season. Tucci in Italy is swarming with handsome images: a mouthwatering dollop of spaghetti and clams inspired by a Neapolitan chef’s 94-year-old mother, majestic Renaissance-era palaces and quaint villages where the show’s host, Stanley Tucci, enlists locals to expound on Italian culture. But director of photography Matt Ball isn’t always looking for polish — he wants candor. “It’s not necessarily a show about how beautiful everything looks,” Ball says. “The primary goal is to get authenticity. And then we shoot around it and try to make it look as nice as we can.” Ball’s cinematography led to one of the three Emmy nominations that Tucci in Italy received this year, alongside a sound mixing citation and outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special. Though it was never an outright hit, St. Elsewhere punched way above its weight in terms of the careers it helped launch and a style that set the template for medical dramas that followed it. The show can also boast one of the more memorable series finales in TV history. Created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey, St. Elsewhere followed the staff and patients at a struggling Boston hospital over six seasons on NBC, from 1982 to 1988. Like its fellow NBC show Hill Street Blues (both were from MTM Enterprises), St. Elsewhere pioneered a new kind of storytelling. Hospital dramas that came before it focused mainly on a lead character whose personal struggles didn’t interfere with their work and presented the health care system as orderly and well functioning (see Marcus Welby, M.D., Trapper John, M.D.). St. Elsewhere instead took a grittier tack, with overlapping, serialized stories and medical professionals who had complicated lives and sometimes could not save patients ­— traits that are recognizable in its successors, from ER to Grey’s Anatomy to …

The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will honor two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts this year with a Golden Eye Award for her performance in Ben Shirinian’s The Housewife. In the ’60s-set drama, based on a true-story, a young New York Times journalist, played by Tye Sheridan, tracks down a man he suspects of being a Nazi officer living secretly in Queens (Luke Evans). But when the reporter befriends the suspect’s elegant and enigmatic wife (Watts), the implications of his investigation become much more unsettling. The Housewife will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival before heading to Zurich. Television’s portrayal of neurodivergence has long suffered from a persistent blind spot. By casting neurotypical actors to play stereotypical — and often heavily coded yet undiagnosed — white male savant archetypes, Hollywood built a rigid standard that has largely erased women, people of color and the broader diversity of real-world neurodivergent experiences. “When you lump all neurodivergent perspectives into the same story — like ADHD, dyslexic and autistic adults — without showing the difference in lived experiences, people start to assume that they’re all the same,” says Tal Anderson, a first-time Emmy nominee for The Pitt. “People start to think that autistic people are all low-support needs [i.e., highly functioning] if that’s all they see onscreen. The nominees for the National Television Awards 2026 have been revealed – and there’s a first for the popular ceremony. The drama performance category features an all-female line-up for the first time, with I Fought the Law star Sheridan Smith going up against Trigger Point’s Vicky McClure. Also nominated in that category are The Other Bennet Sister star Ella Bruccoleri, Call the Midwife’s Judy Parfitt and Ruth Jones, who’s nominated for her turn in the Harlan Coben thriller Run Away. In the reality competition category, I’m A Celebrity will take on its South African spin-off in the category as well as BBC titan The Celebrity Traitors, which is also up against its civilian version.
