PCF’s birthday letter to Singapore: 40 years of empowering dreams

PCF’s birthday letter to Singapore: 40 years of empowering dreams

Seven-year-old Skyler Lee loves construction toys, cars and being a big brother to his two siblings. He also has global developmental delay and needs additional support with speech, literacy and fine motor skills. The early intervention (EI) he received in preschool last year, however, helped him catch up with his peers and eased his transition to Primary 1. Stories like Skyler’s reflect the work of PAP Community Foundation (PCF), which turned 40 on May 17. Founded by the People’s Action Party, the charitable organisation supports people at different stages of life through its islandwide network of preschools and eldercare services. Another beneficiary is Madam Zainab Binte Rahmat, 55, a semi-retiree who lives with her husband, 63, and mother, 86, in Yew Tee. They are regulars at PCF Sparkle Care @ Yew Tee’s Active Ageing Centre, where Mdm Zainab also volunteers twice a week. She accompanies elderly clients from the adjoining senior care centre on drives to help ensure a safe and comfortable journey.  “We remain responsive to evolving needs,” said Mr Victor Bay, CEO of …

On the trail of the dotcom queen: how Julie Meyer left a pattern of unpaid bills, missing funds and broken dreams in her wake | UK news

Julie Meyer is sitting in a starkly lit attic, surrounded by piles of £50 notes. A California blond in a crisp, white shirt, her long, stockinged legs crossed at the knee, she listens intently to the young man standing before her. As he talks, she sizes him up. Eventually, she tells him: “I’m going to make you an offer.” It could be a scene from a heist movie, but Meyer is in a BBC studio, shooting a 2009 episode of the TV show Dragons’ Den. A celebrated entrepreneur with a venture capital fund, she is ready to invest in whichever contestants catch her eye. For the viewers, she has some advice: “What is success? A lot of it is self-belief. Continuing on when most rational people would stop.” This is an online spin-off from the original Dragons’ Den series, so the stakes are a little lower. But for Lex Deak, a 23-year-old with a big idea for a social media website, what happens in this room today could be make or break. He desperately wants to work with Meyer. During the …

It wasn’t a nightmare exactly, but it was vivid and unsettling—a circus of imagery in which the other commuters stuck in gridlock beside you were all octopi  or your feet were transformed into a pair of horse hooves while going through airport security.  Maybe you don’t often remember your dreams but this one, this episode that fused the mundane with the outlandish, it sticks. Even days later, you can still see those tentacles gripping the steering wheels or feel the awkwardness of your gait running to catch your flight.  It couldn’t have been that joint you smoked before bed, could it? Bruce Springsteen Caps Land of Hopes and Dreams Tour in Philadelphia

Bruce Springsteen Caps Land of Hopes and Dreams Tour in Philadelphia

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band wrapped their 20-date Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour on Saturday night in Philadelphia at the Xfinity Center with a tour de force performance encapsulating one of Springsteen’s most fiery tours to date.  What set out to be a run of twenty shows from Minneapolis to Washington, D.C. was altered slightly when the Philadelphia 76ers’ playoff schedule forced a reschedule for the Philly date (originally set for May 8th) – making the City of Brotherly Love the last date of the run, rather than Washington. In almost perfectly poetic irony, the tour that’s ostensibly about the foundation and principles of the country wrapped in the city the nation was founded in. Philadelphia marked the eleventh consecutive show of performing the same setlist, a notable rarity for an act who’s synonymous with dynamic live performances night after night, though an understandable choice given how pointed the message for these shows is.  In the opening monologue of the night — nearly verbatim for most nights on the tour — …

It felt like you were dreaming all night. But did all that dreaming actually wear you out? Let’s look at what the science says. We all dream, but not everyone remembers it Most dreaming occurs during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which makes up 20–25 per cent of our total sleep time. We have four to six rounds of REM throughout the night, with each round growing longer as morning approaches. We all dream, and most of us dream multiple times a night, whether we remember it or not. If you wake up during or just after a REM period, you are more likely to remember what you were dreaming. REM sleep comprises around 20-25 per cent of our total sleep time …

God Still Speaks Through Dreams and Visions – OpentheWord.org

Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel Credit: Michelangelo/1517/Wikipedia/Public Domain As the Middle East endures continued conflict, a curious phenomena is taking place. Ministries are reporting that Muslims are increasingly turning to Christianity for answers. This is particularly true among the Kurds. They are an ethnic group that originated in Iran. They number approximately 40 million. With no home state, they are spread throughout various nations in the Middle East. Because of a desire for their own homeland, they are often perceived as a threat in nations with larger populations. In an interview with CBN, Pastor Georges Houssney of Horizons International (HI) shared how Kurdish-Muslims are turning to Christ, often through dreams and visions. These are genuine encounters, as it takes a supernatural event to convince Muslims to embrace Jesus. This is because they pay a heavy price for leaving Islam. At the very least, they are cut off from their families and friends. In more extreme cases, their lives can also be endangered. It was just such a vision that led …

Epic dreaming is leaving people exhausted and distressed

Epic dreaming is leaving people exhausted and distressed

Imagine regularly waking up exhausted, not because you didn’t sleep, but because you seemingly spent the entire night immersed in incessant dreams. For people who experience such “epic dreaming”, the effects can be severe, often impacting their work and day-to-day lives. “These vivid experiences linger in my mind, drain my energy and create lasting fatigue,” said one such epic dreamer. This woman, identified as 38-year-old Madame R, is one of four epic dreamers who have been assessed at two centres in France. Though scientific descriptions of epic dreams date back more than 20 years, the four detailed case studies support the idea that it should be recognised as a distinct sleep disorder, according to the researchers, who included Pierre Geoffroy at Paris Cité University. During her assessment, Madame R said she has always experienced epic dreaming, but it worsened after the birth of her second child. The other case studies include Monsieur W., a 74-year-old man who said his intense, vivid dreams are “at times indistinguishable from reality”. Then there’s Monsieur D., a 58-year-old man …
