Where to eat and drink near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood

Making a rib stop on the way to a game and then eating your barbecue inside your car — or, better, on the hood of your car if you don’t want sauce-stained seats — has been a classic move since the days the Lakers used to play at the Forum in Inglewood. Lately, however, it’s getting harder to find old-school L.A. barbecue — the wood-smoked ribs and links and small ends that have long powered this city. Luckily, Inglewood is home to two outposts from the first family of L.A. barbecue: Woody’s (see separate entry), started by the late Woodrow “Woody” Phillips and Phillips Bar-B-Que from Woody’s cousin Foster Phillips, who still inspires younger pitmasters. Where Woody’s has patio seating, Phillips, in traditional barbecue style, is a take-out-only shop with a tightly packed parking lot off Centinela Avenue. It’s the only location that remains after the 2024 closure of Phillips’ Crenshaw spot. Recently, I stopped in for pork ribs so tender the meat easily came free from the bone; small ends, a meaty cut Phillips …

Best places to eat and drink near the L.A. Coliseum

Best places to eat and drink near the L.A. Coliseum

First-timers visiting the 35,000-square-foot Mercado La Paloma, take heed: The line likely trailing out the door and into the parking lot is specifically for Holbox, the most decorated and popular among the market’s seven food vendors. Chef Gilberto Cetina’s mariscos creations are revolutionary in their freshness and jigsaw-intricate flavors. Tuna tostada, scallop aguachile, coctel mixto and smoked kanpachi taco number among must-try dishes. Other wonderful options in the mercado await without the Holbox queues. Begin at Komal, where Fátima Juárez’s quesadillas and tacos, as beautiful as they are delicious, showcase the earthy-fragrant masa she crafts daily from heirloom corn varieties, and Chichén Itzá, where the Cetina family serves lush, orange-scented cochinita pibil and other specialties from the Yucatán. The mercado is such a vital sanctuary for the city that fellow critic Jenn Harris and I ranked it number one on our recent guide to the 101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles. Source link

10 Korean dishes to savour now – from fried chicken to kimchi dumplings and stuffed pancakes | Korean food and drink

10 Korean dishes to savour now – from fried chicken to kimchi dumplings and stuffed pancakes | Korean food and drink

From sizzling bowls of comforting bibimbap to crispy, hot, sweet pancakes, Korean food is exploding in popularity in the UK. Demand is rising for the country’s bold and punchy flavours, which feature soy sauce, sesame oil, the tangy, fermented kick of kimchi, raw napa cabbage and gochujang, a sweet and spicy chilli paste that elevates dips and gives an umami boost to sauces. Last year, Waitrose reported that sales of gochujang had increased by 71% since 2024. Jamie Oliver uses it to flavour his chicken burgers while Nigella Lawson adds it to her pasta sauce. In March, Korean fried chicken was named one of Just Eat’s top 10 takeaways of 2026, while there were long queues this month at Jung, a Korean food festival in London. Britons, it seems, can’t get enough of Korean cuisine. So, which dishes should you be seeking out – and where can you find them? What Flavour Is Cola? This Is What Gives Soft Drink Its Distinct Flavour

What Flavour Is Cola? This Is What Gives Soft Drink Its Distinct Flavour

If you had to guess what the secret behind that distinctively malty Biscoff flavour is, you probably wouldn’t say sugar ― but that’s likely what it is. Similarly, red velvet cake’s earthy, tender flavour isn’t created by crimson berries or beetroot; traditionally, it’s the action of buttermilk and vinegar on Dutch-processed cocoa and baking soda that gives it its signature taste and hue. It also contains vanilla. So, it shouldn’t have shocked me that cola’s taste is partly down to an unexpected source; namely, the kola nut (yes, there is such a thing). What’s a kola nut, and what other flavours are involved? According to beverage company StrangeLove, “cola brands guard their own secret formulas with their lives, using generic terms such as ‘artificial and natural flavours.’” Talk of Coca-Cola’s top-secret “7X” ingredient seems to confirm such theories. Nonetheless, some ingredients stay constant, StrangeLove explains. “Cola generally is a carbonated beverage which consists of these key ingredients; kola nut, citrus oils, vanilla and cinnamon,” they say. This is usually mixed with a caramel base for …

Doctor Explains Why You Pee After You Drink Water

Doctor Explains Why You Pee After You Drink Water

According to Dr. Michael, who debunks medical myths on TikTok, peeing immediately after you drink doesn’t mean you’re getting rid of the liquid before your body can take in the water it needs. I’d always believed the myth that everyone has to drink eight glasses of water a day, but following it took its toll on my bladder.  “Water just goes straight through me,” I’d tell people (sorry if you heard that from me constantly circa 2018-2023). I’d also constantly panic it meant I wasn’t “absorbing” the H2O I needed. I’ve since learned, to my relief and my loved ones’, that how much we need to drink depends on the person; we also get moisture from other sources, like food.  And as of yesterday, I’ve also learned that there’s no such thing as “water passing right through you” ― instead, a far more complex process is taking place. How does it happen? According to Dr. Michael, who debunks medical myths on TikTok, peeing immediately after you drink doesn’t mean you’re getting rid of the liquid …

Want to Challenge How Much You Drink?

Want to Challenge How Much You Drink?

With distillers experimenting with alcohol-free spirits, bartenders getting wildly creative with mocktails, and study after study debunking myths about the health benefits of moderate drinking, it is striking how many people still report having several drinks each night to unwind. I always ask about the amount of alcohol and substance use at the beginning of therapy, because if someone is addicted to—or even dependent upon—a substance, the impact of therapy can be limited. In these situations, the main help I can provide usually relates to aiding a client’s realization that they need to seek substance abuse treatment. How should therapists address and assess for substance abuse disorders? And has the assessment equation changed now that it has become increasingly clear that alcohol may be far more harmful than previously believed? One strategy I find helpful is encouraging clients who report daily or near-daily use — especially those who rationalize higher levels of consumption — to read This Naked Mind by Annie Grace. She opens with a provocative question: “What if, by reversing years of unconscious …

Queen Camilla can’t hide her honest reaction to ‘very strong’ Irish drink

Queen Camilla can’t hide her honest reaction to ‘very strong’ Irish drink

Queen Camilla, 78, is known to be a fan of red wine and has also been partial to a gin and Dubonnet, but we don’t think the royal will be adding whiskey to her drinks order any time soon. Earlier this week, on a trip to Northern Ireland, Camilla and her husband King Charles visited Titanic Distillers for an exclusive tour. During the look-around, they were both given a tipple to try – and it appeared to take Her Majesty by surprise.  The Queen lifted the glass to her nose to smell it, and her head involuntarily jolted backwards in a very slight but distinct movement. She then smirked to herself at the reaction, but wasn’t deterred and straight away went in for a sip. After tasting, she branded it: “Very strong,” as her husband turned to her to see what she thought of it.  Charles, however, is a big whiskey fan, and he even sells his own Scotch at Highgrove. So it appeared easier to swallow for Charles, who had a try and then enthusiastically …

Scientists Explain Whether You Should Drink Coffee Before Or After Breakfast

Scientists Explain Whether You Should Drink Coffee Before Or After Breakfast

Though drinking more than three or four cups of coffee a day might be bad for us, a growing body of research suggests that coffee drinkers might live longer and even age better. This may be especially true if we opt for black coffee with no sugar. And according to a 2020 paper in the British Journal Of Nutrition, when we drink our morning cup of Joe matters too. Is it better to drink coffee before or after breakfast? The scientists recorded participants’ blood responses to different consumption habits after a disrupted night’s sleep and a normal night’s sleep. On one day, participants were given a glucose drink on waking from an uninterrupted sleep; on another, a glucose drink after a bad night’s kip; and on yet another day, a cup of coffee before the glucose drink (also after poor sleep). The glucose drink was meant to mimic the nutritional content of a “normal” breakfast. In this study, the researchers found that one night of bad sleep did not significantly negatively affect healthy participants’ metabolism. …

Diet Coke break: How the aluminium shortage could be affecting the production of your favourite soft drink

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more When I told my housemate there was a Diet Coke shortage, she almost fell to her knees. “Do not come to me with this news. I’ll go and protest. I’ll get arrested. My day is ruined. I’ll genuinely be insufferable to be around,” she screamed, clutching the side of the fridge. In the hellscape of 2026, the drink of choice for many looking for that addictive boost at lunch before sending a flurry of fizz-fuelled emails is in danger. In recent weeks, reports have emerged that Diet Coke is vanishing from shelves across India as addicts start to stockpile the cans due to fears of an aluminium shortage linked to the Iran war disrupting supplies of the metal. Hands off: the drink has been …
