Congressional stock trading curb due to get House vote

Congressional stock trading curb due to get House vote

The U.S. House is due to take up legislation Wednesday afternoon that would stop members of Congress from buying individual stocks while in office, potentially taking the first meaningful action on an issue that has dogged lawmakers for years. There is broad public support for a ban on members of Congress trading while in office, as lawmakers’ well-timed trades and booming portfolios have raised insider trading concerns among ethics watchdogs and drawn intense public scrutiny going back decades. But the GOP-led legislation before the House, dubbed the Stop Insider Trading Act, falls well short of what the most vocal advocates of a congressional trading ban have called for. And Democrats are lining up against the proposal. “I’m very disappointed in it. It’s a stock trading ban that still allows stock trading. It’s a weak bill,” Rep. Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., part of a bipartisan coalition that has advocated for a more thorough ban, told CNBC. U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), with Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and Representative …

Smoke from massive wildfires in Canada and Minnesota engulf the Washington, D.C. skyline on July 17, 2026, reducing visibility and casting a colored haze over the Lincoln Memorial. Finn Gomez/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Finn Gomez/Getty Images WASHINGTON — Poor air quality persisted in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states on Saturday, as smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Minnesota and Canada continued to spread and envelop skylines. The National Weather Service (NWS) said heavy rain and storms could help clear the air in the northeast and mid-Atlantic this weekend, while dangerous levels of air pollution will still hang over the Midwest. “As we start clearing out here in the east, they’re going to get the next batch of smoke later this afternoon into tonight across areas from upper Michigan, eastern Wisconsin, into Illinois and Indiana, including Chicago,” NWS Forecaster Brian Hurley told NPR. “That will continue through [Sunday], unfortunately.” Major League Baseball postponed Friday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Guardians due to poor air quality in Cleveland until Saturday. …

Dialog Cafe closes indefinitely due to West Hollywood water main break

Tadeh Ghazalian woke up on Thursday morning and scrolled Instagram, where he saw a video of a broken water main and a deluge of water spilling onto the street — right by his restaurant. Then he noticed the flurry of unread texts and unheard voicemails from friends, family and staff, who were all concerned about Dialog Cafe: his popular family business located right at the corner where a large sinkhole was opening at a busy Sunset Strip intersection. “All that water that came out of that line immediately went right in my front door, and it continued for four or five hours,” he said. “Just imagine thousands of pounds of water going inside. At one point, you couldn’t even see the floor. It looked like a pool.” Early Thursday morning, a 110-year-old underground pipe burst, spewing 17 million gallons of water through portions of West Hollywood and flooding businesses, homes and garages, with the damage still being tallied. The major rupture also caused a sinkhole at Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive, with ensuing road closures …
