Sean Egan has claimed the company threw him under the bus ‘for doing the right thing’ (Image: -) A long-serving Morrisons employee, dismissed after confronting a violent shoplifter, has spoken out against the supermarket giant. Sean Egan has claimed the company threw him under the bus “for doing the right thing” after being sacked following 29 years of loyal service. The 46 year old became embroiled in a confrontation with career criminal Daniel Kendall, who spat in his face and turned aggressive inside the store in Aldridge, West Midlands. Kendall, who has more than 100 offences to his name, managed to flee with two bottles of Jack Daniel’s despite Mr Egan’s best efforts in December. Mr Egan, a married father from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, had recognised Kendall as a prolific shoplifter who had previously targeted the same store. Speaking today, Mr Egan said: “I dedicated my whole life to Morrisons, but they did not even take my 29 years of service into account and just threw me under the bus for standing up for what …

In a vote of Unison members, Egan defeated incumbent Christina McAnea by 60 per cent to 40 per cent, it was announced on Wednesday morning. She will begin her five-year term in January. Egan said her victory means “ordinary UNISON members are at long last taking charge of our union”. “We will put faith in members’ decisions and stand up to any employer, politician or cabinet minister who acts against our interests. Together, we will turn UNISON into the remarkable force for change it should be. That journey has begun today,” she said. Reacting to the result, Prime Minister Starmer said: “Congratulations to Andrea Egan on her election …

The Scramble for the Seafloor | Rebecca Egan McCarthy

The Scramble for the Seafloor | Rebecca Egan McCarthy

Since 1779 photosynthesis has been the standard-issue explanation for the continuation of life on earth: plants absorb sunlight, which fuels their metabolism, and create oxygen as waste. This is such basic, grade-school science that it normally wouldn’t bear mentioning, but in July 2024 a team led by Andrew Sweetman at the Scottish Association for Marine Science reported a startling finding in Nature. On the deep seafloor—where light never penetrates—oxygen is apparently being produced by rocks. These rocks are known as polymetallic nodules, which form over the course of millions of years when small debris like sharks’ teeth attract trace metals from the surrounding seawater. The seafloor is covered in a viscous ooze, composed of the compressed skeletons of dead marine life, and the nodules lie strewn atop it, packed closely together. Sweetman and his team were investigating the microbial life in this deep-sea environment by lowering custom-designed chambers into the depths, creating a seal around seafloor sediment. Generally, the oxygen within the chambers decreases as various organisms consume it. In the nodule fields, against all …
