7 simple ways to elevate your garden in time for summer

7 simple ways to elevate your garden in time for summer

With the days getting longer and your mowing taken care of, it’s time to put those reclaimed hours to use in the rest of the garden. A few thoughtful upgrades can completely transform an outdoor space, so here are seven simple ways to elevate your garden in time for summer. Shed the shed! Garden sheds often occupy some of the most valuable space, so it’s worth asking whether yours is truly earning its keep. Without the need to store a traditional lawn mower, has yours become a dumping ground for outgrown bikes, worn cushions and long-forgotten paint tins? Reconsidering this footprint can be surprisingly transformative. Downsizing or removing it altogether opens up opportunities for more satisfying uses, from a cut flower bed or mini allotment to an outdoor kitchen or small garden room. Create atmosphere with lighting Overhead festoon lights add depth without overwhelming the space (Getty Images) Lighting is one of the simplest ways to transform a garden. A layered approach with festoon lights overhead, subtle pathway lighting and a soft glow around seating …

How Bob Odenkirk and the ‘Nobody’ team set out to elevate the genre with ‘Normal’

How Bob Odenkirk and the ‘Nobody’ team set out to elevate the genre with ‘Normal’

At first glance, many may have assumed that Bob Odenkirk’s new film, Normal, was another sequel in the Nobody franchise. With the same star, writer, and producer, the two films do share much of the same DNA. However, the team’s new movie is not only a completely new story but attempts to blend genres in a way that further separates it from its predecessor. Mashable’s Entertainment Editor, Kristy Puchko, caught up with the Normal team at SXSW to talk about the film, its themes, and why they chose to film on 35mm. The film’s writer, Derek Kolstad (John Wick, Nobody), noted how this film differs from Nobody, the team’s previous collaboration. “To this point, you know, in Nobody, if there’s a house on fire, Hutch is going to run into it and hopefully fight anyone who’s in there. In Normal, he’s going to look at the house on fire and say, ‘I don’t know.’” Odenkirk added, “It’s not that much fire.” The Normal star described the film as “a story of a guy who has …

Living along the coast may elevate your risk of high blood pressure

Living along the coast may elevate your risk of high blood pressure

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore When people consider what causes high blood pressure, they often think of lifestyle factors, such as eating salty foods, lack of exercise or smoking. However, an unexpected source of salt might also be raising blood pressure for millions of people: the water they drink. As sea levels rise, more and more salt water tends to infiltrate global freshwater sources. I’m a public health researcher, and this raised a question for my team: Could saltwater intrusion be increasing the risk of high blood pressure worldwide? In our analysis of existing research, we found that people exposed to saltier drinking water tend to have significantly higher blood pressure and a greater risk of hypertension. This link, as expected, appears strongest in coastal areas where seawater is increasingly contaminating freshwater supplies. Our findings highlight an often overlooked environmental factor in cardiovascular disease that could …

📚 Recognize, elevate, and drive support

📚 Recognize, elevate, and drive support

Amelia Blackwell is the author of A Crime Through Time: Miss Darcy Investigates, out now from Pan Macmillan. Below, she considers what Jane Austen would think of Georgiana Darcy as an amateur detective in a cozy mystery novel. Like most writers, Jane Austen was keen to make money from her work. If she were alive in 2026, I like to imagine her publishing a slew of cosy crime novels and earning a fortune from her books, certainly more than the £668 that historian Lucy Worsley reports Austen to have made from publication of the four novels that were released during her lifetime, in a period when the average solicitor could expect to earn an annual income of £1500, overtaking Austen’s total lifetime earnings in just six months.  Austen’s mix of gentle humour, razor-sharp characterisation, and clever plotting conjures worlds that perfectly lend themselves to cosy mysteries—passions swirl beneath a tranquil surface, little is said but much is felt, and all that unspoken tension, lust, and ambition is the perfect stage for a crime. Sadly for …

Elevate your everyday with Laifen’s incredible self-care range

Elevate your everyday with Laifen’s incredible self-care range

The backstory of Laifen is one of sheer engineering obsession. The brand was founded by Hongxin Ye, a visionary self-styled ‘creative geek’ with a passion for technological products that are as beautiful as they are affordable. The journey began with a singular focus – build a better brushless motor. In a bid to move away from the traditional motor models that easily wear and tear, Laifen’s smart brushless alternative uses electronic controllers instead, resulting in a mechanism that’s quieter, more efficient and ultimately more durable. This has since become the heartbeat of the Laifen products as the brand continues expanding into smart personal care. That engineering focus also extends to Laifen’s electric razors, powered by a self-developed high-speed linear motor and crafted from a single block of aerospace-grade aluminium using CNC machining, with over 8,000 seconds of precision processing. The same approach carries over to the brand’s electric toothbrush, which features Laifen’s proprietary high-response servo system. By combining robotics-inspired motor technology with a linear Hall sensor and PID control, it enables a precisely controlled 60-degree …
