King’s Speech 2026 – the bills, royal embarrassment and humiliated PM | UK | News

Wednesday’s King’s Speech is Sir Keir Starmer’s bid to reassert his authority, with 35 bills lined up for the coming parliamentary year – even as the pressure from his own MPs to quit shows no sign of easing. The legislative programme spans housing, immigration, energy, health and a closer relationship with the EU – a broad canvas intended to project momentum, during his moment of most acute political vulnerability to date. On Tuesday night, Starmer said: “The British people expect the government to get on with the job of changing our country for the better. “Cutting the cost of living, bringing down hospital waiting lists and keeping our country safe in an increasingly dangerous world. Britain stands at a pivotal moment: to press ahead with a plan to build a stronger, fairer country or turn back to the chaos and instability of the past. My government will deliver on the promise of change for the British people.” The remarks, however, were largely a repeat what he told cabinet on Tuesday: “I take responsibility for the …

11 Things Gen Z Does That Their Gen X & Millennial Parents Find Deeply Embarrassing For Them

Every generation develops its own way of communicating, presenting itself, and making sense of the world. What comes naturally to one often appears exaggerated or confusing to others. That gap becomes most obvious when different age groups are looking at the same behavior through completely different lenses. Gen Z has grown up in a fully online environment, where identity is constantly evolving. Gen X and millennials came up in a more transitional space, which shapes how they interpret those same behaviors. These are 11 things Gen Z does that their Gen X & millennial parents find deeply embarrassing for them 1. Treating everyday experiences like they need a full narrative Sharing a moment often turns into explaining its meaning, sometimes in a way that feels overly detailed. Discord’s Verification Saga Has Devolved Into a Complete Self-Inflicted Embarrassment

Discord’s Verification Saga Has Devolved Into a Complete Self-Inflicted Embarrassment

Messaging platform Discord’s efforts to roll out age verification software have been nothing short of a disaster. Back on February 9, the company announced that it was launching “enhanced teen safety features” that would require underage users across the world to have their faces scanned or upload a form of ID. The news led to a massive outcry, with privacy advocates arguing the effort could easily backfire, allowing extremely sensitive data to leak into the wrong hands. Case in point, Discord had already drawn plenty of criticism in October after admitting that a “third-party service provider” had leaked ID photos of around 70,000 users following a cyberattack. Users also heavily criticized the company’s brief partnership with Persona, a Peter Thiel-backed age verification provider. The enormous amount of backlash that ensued led Discord to wipe any mentions of the company’s name from its support page last week, as The Verge reported on Monday. Adding insult to injury, Discord was swept into the next controversy after nearly 2,500 files associated with Persona’s facial recognition checks were made …

The Oscars and the Golden Globes are broadcast live not simply to remain as gripping TV, but also to preserve the excitement of who’s won what. But with the Baftas, crazily, happening two hours earlier than the broadcast, all the results are already out. Everyone is two-screening these days, but particularly during big TV spectacles when you’re checking out social media reactions as you’re watching the bigger screen. As such, the majority of TV viewers already knew who had won everything. No tension then, no drama, only cringe. Source link

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest will come as an “enormous embarrassment” for the British monarchy which must now be seen to be completely transparent in its handling of the unprecedented situation, says Martin Farr, senior lecturer in contemporary British history at Newcastle University.
