Testing autonomous agents (Or: how I learned to stop worrying and embrace chaos)

Testing autonomous agents (Or: how I learned to stop worrying and embrace chaos)

Look, we’ve spent the last 18 months building production AI systems, and we’ll tell you what keeps us up at night — and it’s not whether the model can answer questions. That’s table stakes now. What haunts us is the mental image of an agent autonomously approving a six-figure vendor contract at 2 a.m. because someone typo’d a config file. We’ve moved past the era of “ChatGPT wrappers” (thank God), but the industry still treats autonomous agents like they’re just chatbots with API access. They’re not. When you give an AI system the ability to take actions without human confirmation, you’re crossing a fundamental threshold. You’re not building a helpful assistant anymore — you’re building something closer to an employee. And that changes everything about how we need to engineer these systems. The autonomy problem nobody talks about Here’s what’s wild: We’ve gotten really good at making models that *sound* confident. But confidence and reliability aren’t the same thing, and the gap between them is where production systems go to die. We learned this the …

Thailand’s ‘Death Fest’ invites visitors to embrace mortality

Thailand’s ‘Death Fest’ invites visitors to embrace mortality

NONTHABURI, Thailand (AP) — Thailand’s “Death Fest” invites people to confront mortality while also offering practical services and spiritual advice for the inevitable. The unusual fair, now in its second year, has broached the subject that’s uncomfortable for many. It’s also one of the central teachings of Buddhism, which shapes much of Thailand’s culture, about life’s unavoidable sufferings: birth, old age, sickness and death. Sangduan Ngamvinijaroon attended the three-day event Friday with her mother in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. She said death used to be a difficult subject for her family, but having spent more than 20 years caring for ill family members, including her husband with a stroke and relatives with cancer, she has witnessed several deaths firsthand and now feels more at ease talking about it. She said she liked the fair because “it’s not just about dying well. It’s also about the present moment and taking good care of our lives while we’re still here.” The event brought together experts and organizations involved in health care, financial planning, palliative care, funeral services …

Drama Erupts Over Claims That Microsoft Will Embrace AI Even More Drastically in Windows 12

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The Barbra Streisand effect was in full swing after tech giant Microsoft attempted to clamp down on the word “Microslop” on a Discord channel dedicated to its AI chatbot Copilot over the weekend. The onslaught of mockery — characterized by a company spokesperson blaming the Microslop dustup on “spammers attempting to disrupt and overwhelm the space with harmful content not related to Copilot” — was too much, forcing Microsoft to shut down the Discord server altogether. The pejorative term has become the rallying cry for disenchanted users of the company’s Windows operating system, who argue that Microsoft has gone too far in its attempts to embrace AI at every level. Meanwhile, company executives have become frustrated with the blowback, with CEO Satya Nadella admitting that “it will be a messy process of discovery, like all technology and product development always is,” during a 2025 year-end roundup. But given the latest rumors, leaks, and discovered code snippets, the company …

Peaky Blinders movie sees Tommy embrace Aunt Polly’s world more

Peaky Blinders movie sees Tommy embrace Aunt Polly’s world more

For Cillian Murphy, there needed to be a really, really good reason to bring Peaky Blinders back. The Immortal Man justified its own existence for the Tommy Shelby star and executive producer by (in his opinion) matching and even improving on the cinematic and climactic ending to season 6, which saw the gangster ride off into distance. But now – next week, to be specific – he’s back, along with several other familiar faces from Steven Knight’s hit BBC series and a few high profile newcomers. Speaking to press including Radio Times at the BFI’s Celebrating Peaky Blinders event hosted by Edith Bowman on Friday night (26th February), Murphy opened up on getting it right for the film’s resurrection of Tommy and the Peaky Blinders. “I felt a real duty to the fans, to the fan base, who, I think, made the thing that it is. “And then I really felt like, okay, if we started him in 1919, and we just come back from this first World War, how can it be as interesting, …

Why It’s Time to Embrace Hybrid Training

Why It’s Time to Embrace Hybrid Training

You know that friend who’s a super fast runner but can’t do push-ups for shit? He could benefit from embracing hybrid training. So would the guys who brag about his bench but can’t get through a 5k without walking. Hybrid training challenges you to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and your favorite disciplines to become a more well-rounded athlete. It’s not about being a master of every exercise, rather someone who can turn their fitness to whatever task is at hand. Weekend bike ride? Sure. Early morning CrossFit? You betcha. Legs day followed by a heart-pumping dynamic abs circuit? Let’s go. It isn’t just for elites, either. Who couldn’t benefit from being a bit more flexible? A bit fitter? A bit stronger? Hybrid training in a nutshell The name’s pretty self-explanatory: it means training in more than one modality, instead of dedicating all of your time to say, running, or Olympic lifts, alone. “Hybrid training incorporates strength and endurance, merging them to improve overall strength and cardiovascular fitness,” says Reece Williams, a physical therapist …

Researchers Studied What Happens When Workplaces Seriously Embrace AI, and the Results May Make You Nervous

Illustration by Tag Hartman-Simkins / Futurism. Source: Getty Images Even if AI is — or eventually becomes — an incredible automation tool, will it make workers’ lives easier? That’s the big question explored in an ongoing study by researchers from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. And so far, it’s not looking good for the rank and file. In a piece for Harvard Business Review, the research team’s Aruna Ranganathan and Xinqi Maggie Ye reported that after closely monitoring a tech company with two hundred employees for eight months, they found that AI actually intensified the work they had to do, instead of reducing it. This “workload creep,” in which the employees took on more tasks than what was sustainable for them to keep doing, can create vicious cycle that leads to fatigue, burnout, and lower quality work. “You had thought that maybe, oh, because you could be more productive with AI, then you save some time, you can work less,” one of the employees told the researchers. “But then really, you don’t work less. …

The first signs of burnout are coming from the people who embrace AI the most

The first signs of burnout are coming from the people who embrace AI the most

The most seductive narrative in American work culture right now isn’t that AI will take your job. It’s that AI will save you from it. That’s the version the industry has spent the last three years selling to millions of nervous people who are eager to buy it. Yes, some white-collar jobs will disappear. But for most other roles, the argument goes, AI is a force multiplier. You become a more capable, more indispensable lawyer, consultant, writer, coder, financial analyst — and so on. The tools work for you, you work less hard, everybody wins. But a new study published in Harvard Business Review follows that premise to its actual conclusion, and what it finds there isn’t a productivity revolution. It finds companies are at risk of becoming burnout machines. As part of what they describe as “in-progress research,” UC Berkeley researchers spent eight months inside a 200-person tech company watching what happened when workers genuinely embraced AI. What they found across more than 40 “in-depth” interviews was that nobody was pressured at this company. …

‘It’s sacred and transformative’: Somerset holds Saxon-inspired festival to embrace ‘month of mud’ | Environment

A misty, rainy day in the uplands of Somerset and the mud was thick and sticky. In some patches, just putting one foot in front of the other without plunging into the mire felt like a win. But Jon Barrett, a community engagement officer for the Quantock Hills national landscape, had a broad grin on his face as he negotiated the ooze. “I know for some, mud may be their nemesis at this time of year but we’re trying to celebrate it, get people to embrace it,” Barrett said. Barrett and his colleagues are running a Month of Mud festival in February, inspired by the Anglo Saxon name for this time of year – Solmōnaþ, sometimes translated as “mud month” (a second possible translation is month of cakes). The landscape team is holding events ranging from squelchy hikes to art sessions in which participants are shown how to make mix the red-hued mud with honey to make paint. There will also be story-telling sessions focusing on earthy legends. “We’re keen to reconnect people with mud,” …
