The Best E-Readers (2026): Kobo, Kindle

The Best E-Readers (2026): Kobo, Kindle

Comparing Our Favorite E-Readers Honorable Mentions Below, you’ll find a few more e-readers we like but don’t necessarily love as much as our top picks. Boox Go 7 ($250) and Boox Color Go 7 ($290): Boox is known for its wide range of e-paper tablets, including the Palma 2 recommended above. If you’re looking for something a little larger with a similar Android-based experience, the Go 7 and Go Color 7 are a solid choice. There are page turner buttons, and it’s a nice square shape that’s easy to hold and use. The Go 7 is black-and-white, but you can get a color screen for $40 more with the Go Color 7. I don’t use color features a ton, so it’s worth saving money if you won’t either, but it’s great that the price difference isn’t steep. Boox Palma 2 for $316: This is a fun little pocket sized device, and it has a nice upgrade from the older model with fingerprint recognition, a faster CPU, and a newer version of Android. My favorite color e-reader is still off, but hurry if you want to save

My favorite color e-reader is still $80 off, but hurry if you want to save

Allison Murray/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. If one of your goals for the new year is to read more books, an e-reader is a great way to achieve that goal, as it houses an entire library of books in one compact device.  Also: The best Amazon Big Spring Sale deals: Live updates My favorite e-reader is the Kindle Colorsoft, and right now, it’s 32% off on Amazon for the Big Spring Sale event, making it cost $170. This deal only lasts during the Spring Sale, which ends tomorrow night.  I had the opportunity to go hands-on with the Kindle Colorsoft when it debuted in 2024, and it still outperforms every other color e-reader I’ve tested. Amazon has given this Kindle a noticeable performance upgrade: it zips through the Kindle library when selecting a book, and pages in your book turn quickly without any annoying lag effects.  The color display isn’t pixelated like some other color e-readers I’ve used, and its highlight feature enables new ways to read books–you can also highlight passages …

Your old Android phone or tablet makes a better e-reader than you’d think

Your old Android phone or tablet makes a better e-reader than you’d think

If you ask me, I think that e-readers are one of the greatest pieces of technology that we’ve seen in quite some time. The ability to take our favorite books with us, create a digital portfolio of our all-time favorites, and access them whenever and wherever we’d like? It’s absolutely genius. While I’ve always preferred e-ink over a digital screen for these types of things, I’m slowly warming up to the idea of using a smaller tablet as an e-reader. While my Kindle is still my preferred method of getting engrossed, the little Lenovo tablet that could has quickly become an alternate favorite. When I’m not repurposing this tablet as a dedicated smart display, I can quickly grab it and access plenty of things that even my Kindle can’t. I replaced both my tablet and e-reader with this one device

I replaced both my tablet and e-reader with this one device

While kids nowadays ask for iPads (and even iPhones) for their birthdays and holidays, I was the type of kid who begged her parents for an eReader. I’d obsessively watch my favorite “booktubers” show off exactly how they set up their Kindles, and my craze for it only stopped when my parents finally caved in and bought me one. For years, my Kindle was practically my entire personality. I’d read for hours on end every single day, and that continued until I fell out of my reading habit because of, well, life. I eventually got an iPad Air and an Apple Pencil for all my college note-taking and started to convince myself that I didn’t really need a separate eReader anymore — that I could do all my reading on it. And boy, was I wrong. I didn’t pick up a book for years, until I found a device that replaced both my iPad and eReader for me: an E-ink note-taking tablet. E-ink tablets bring the best of both devices together All in one neat …

As an avid book lover, I’m a sucker for a great e-reader. But the problem is that many of these devices are way too limited to become a companion device. This is why I loved the TCL Nxtpaper tablet so much. There’s another device, however: the new DuRobo Krono is here to address that tablet’s downfall: it’s a pocket e-reader and productivity device that is finally available for purchase. DuRoBo Krono Is a New Smartphone-Size E-Reader With AI

DuRoBo Krono Is a New Smartphone-Size E-Reader With AI

Dutch company DuRoBo has a new e-reader called the Krono that it’s showcasing at CES 2026 and boasts a smartphone-like form factor, along with a built-in AI assistant, the company said in a press release on Tuesday. The Krono is meant to be a “ePaper focus hub” for reading, ideation and music listening, the company said. It features a “smart dial” along the left side, allowing people to easily navigate through pages or adjust settings. Krono’s AI assistant, named Libby AI, can answer questions and “support deeper thinking.” Krono ships with Android 15, meaning it has access to the Google Play Store.  The Krono is being released in an e-reader market heavily dominated by Amazon. The retail giant’s Kindle e-reader platform is wildly popular, holding 72% market share. It’s followed by Rakuten’s Kobo e-readers, at 10% market share. Krono is likely trying to differentiate itself from other e-readers by having a more smartphone-like form factor, acting as a second screen in backpacks or pockets. AI integration, along with Android support, also enhances its value.  The …
