Rare Manuscript of AA ‘Big Book’ Estimated at $2 M. Heads to Auction

A rare working copy of Alcoholics Anonymous, the basic text of the 12-step program, also known as “the Big Book,” is coming to auction at Christies New York on July 1 at its Rockefeller Center salesroom. It comes from the collection of the late billionaire Jim Irsay. Bearing extensive handwritten notations and edits by the authors, it is estimated to sell for between $1 and $2 million. The proceeds will go to philanthropic causes that were important to Irsay. The manuscript has sold for various prices over the years; the next buyer may get it at a discount relative to its last outing. Irsay bought the manuscript in 2018 from auction house Profiles in History for $2.4 million, per ESPN; it had previously come to auction twice at Sotheby’s, ESPN reports: in 2004, when it went for $1.6 million, and in 2007, when it fetched $992,000. The monumental performance echoes similar free spectacles by Madonna earlier in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, both of which also drew immense crowds to the sprawling sands. Shakira’s show was a key stop on her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (“Women No Longer Cry”) world tour, named after her critically acclaimed 2024 album. Kicking off around 11 pm, more than an hour after its scheduled start, the megastar was met with deafening screams and fervent applause. Overhead, skywriting drones illuminated the night sky, spelling out “I love you Brazil” in Portuguese. During the event, Shakira fondly reminisced about her initial visit to the South American …

With an estimated 500,000 killed, the Russia-Ukraine war is Europe’s deadliest since 1945

Relatives of victims of the Russian occupation stand before the Wall of Remembrance during a ceremony marking four years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in Bucha, on February 24, 2026. SERGEI GRITS/AP Between 500,000 and 600,000 deaths, both military and civilian. That is the approximate toll, four years after Vladimir Putin decided to launch the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The war has become the deadliest bloodshed in Europe since World War II, far surpassing the wars in Yugoslavia. If war-disabled people are included, the total nears 2 million people, according to calculations by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think tank specializing in security issues. However, this is only an estimate, as both Ukraine and Russia have classified their military losses. According to a United Nations report from mid-February, the number of proven and identified Ukrainian civilian victims has reached 53,006 since February 24, 2022, including 15,954 deaths. To this must be added the tens of thousands of civilian victims in the 20% of Ukrainian territory occupied …

Tesla (TSLA) US sales estimated to have dropped 17% in January

Tesla (TSLA) US sales estimated to have dropped 17% in January

Tesla’s US sales fell an estimated 17% year-over-year in January 2026, according to registration data from Motor Intelligence. The automaker moved an estimated 40,100 vehicles during the month, down from 48,500 in January 2025. Tesla doesn’t report monthly US sales figures, so third-party registration estimates are the best available proxy — and they point to a fourth consecutive month of declining domestic demand. A domestic market in retreat The January estimates continue a trend that has now defined the better part of two years for Tesla’s US business. Based on Motor Intelligence data, domestic registrations have declined year-over-year in nine of the past twelve months, with only the July-September 2025 window posting gains, a burst driven almost entirely by consumers rushing to buy before the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired on September 30. Once that artificial demand pull-forward ended, the bottom fell out. Motor Intelligence estimates that full-year 2025 US registrations totaled 568,454 units, down 10% from 2024’s 625,712. That tracks closely with Tesla’s global story: the company delivered 1.636 million vehicles worldwide in …

AGA projects that an estimated $1.76 billion will be wagered on Super Bowl LX

A recent study by the American Gaming Association (AGA) projects that an estimated $1.76 billion will be wagered on Super Bowl LX. The regulator has based its prediction on the explosive rise of prediction markets and the continued growth and strength of the legal, state- and tribal-regulated markets. AGA predicts $1.76 billion will be wagered on Super Bowl LX The AGA published the study, with President and CEO Bill Miller vocal about the regulator’s views on traditional sports betting markets and prediction markets. “This research reinforces why state-and-tribal-regulated sportsbooks are critical, offering strong oversight and consumer protections that prediction markets simply do not match,” said Miller. The strong throughline from Miller indicates that prediction markets remain in a grey area with the AGA, which could be linked to the ongoing legal disputes between prediction market operators and the traditional licensed and tribal gaming sector. Americans are expected to wager a record $1.76B legally on Super Bowl LX, a testament to the strength of the state- and tribal-regulated sports betting market. Indonesia’s 2025 GDP growth estimated at targeted 5.2%, finance minister says

JAKARTA, Jan 27 : Overall GDP growth in Indonesia is expected to have met the 5.2 per cent target for 2025 despite widespread destruction caused by floods late last year, though growth was estimated to have been quicker in the fourth quarter, the finance minister said on Tuesday. The 2026 growth target of 5.4 per cent was also maintained for the $1.4 trillion economy, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said at a gathering of Indonesia’s financial stability board.     Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said his institution would continue to monitor for room to cut interest rates to support economic growth. He said rates were kept unchanged in recent months to maintain the stability of the rupiah. Indonesia’s currency has weakened this month over concerns about central bank independence. Bank Indonesia would help it remain stable, including through market interventions, Warjiyo said. “In formulating monetary policy, we will always look at inflation, exchange rates, and economic growth data,” Warjijo said. BI kept the benchmark 7-day reverse repurchase rate IDCBRR=ECI at 4.75 per cent last week, where it has been …
