Acts representing Israel, Finland and Greece were among those to be voted through after performing live in Vienna, Austria. Despite not being eligible for voting, Italy’s crooner Sal Da Vinci and Germany’s Sarah Engel’s also got to perform their songs during the semi-final. Italy and Germany – along with France and the UK who will perform in the second semi-final on Thursday 14 May – automatically gain a place in the final as members of the “Big Four”, who make the biggest financial contributions to Eurovision each year. Spain traditionally completes what was formerly known as the “Big Five”, but withdrew from this year’s contest in protest over Israel’s participation. A taste of Eurovision permeated the inaugural StreamTV Europe industry event in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday, courtesy of a session entitled: “The Original Song Contest: A Eurovision Case Study.” Now, the U.S. is getting a free option to follow all the fun and the fury of the annual singing competition, courtesy of YouTube. Jurian Van Der Meer, commercial director of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), who oversees all business and commercial activities related to the Eurovision Song Contest, broke the news during the panel that YouTube has struck a deal for the event, starting with this year’s 70th anniversary edition, taking place in Vienna, Austria. The deal covers the semifinals and final, which are also already available in the U.S. for Peacock subscribers. So far, “we didn’t really have a strategy for distributing our content” longer-term, including the national selection processes, Van der Meer shared on the Lisbon stage. Eurovision Changes Rules After Israel Public Vote Controversy

The Eurovision Song Contest is implementing new rules around its voting system after uproar around Israel’s result in May. When entrant Yuval Raphael sang “New Day Will Rise” at the competition held in Basel, Switzerland, she swiftly topped the public voting charts and later placed second to Austria when the jury scores were counted. But some counties, including broadcasters in Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Iceland and Finland, raised concerns about the public vote and requested an audit. Organizers of the contest at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said the vote was checked and verified. Now, the song contest has restructured its voting and promotion rules ahead of next year’s edition in Vienna, Austria. “We’ve listened and we’ve acted,” said Eurovision director Martin Green. “The neutrality and integrity of the Eurovision Song Contest is of paramount importance to the EBU, its members, and all our audiences.
