Iran war pushes up gas prices and makes the case for home solar

Iran war pushes up gas prices and makes the case for home solar

On today’s independent episode of Quick Charge, we take a look at refining and distributing our own fuel supply with home solar as America’s war in Iran rages on, shooting gas prices (and EV sales) into the stratosphere. As diesel prices cross $8/gal. in parts of California, more and more Americans are shopping for EVs and hybrids, and that’s driving record sales of electrified vehicles for brands like Toyota and Hyundai. It’s also brought the ability to generate your own “electric fuel” with a home solar panel system back into the limelight, whether you qualify for a tax credit or not! Gas prices aren’t the only factor fueling used EV sales

Gas prices aren’t the only factor fueling used EV sales

The most recent electric vehicle sales data provided a grim picture — at least for new EVs. Sales of new electric vehicles took a beating in the first quarter, falling some 28% year-over-year after the Trump administration axed the $7,500 consumer tax credit, according to Cox Automotive. Used EVs are moving in the opposite direction. And a couple of accelerants have combined to supercharge those sales. First-quarter used EV sales increased 12% compared with the same quarter last year, according to that same Cox Automotive report. There’s a bit of momentum over a shorter term too; used EV sales popped 17% between the fourth and first quarters. The rising cost of gas — the average price is above $4 a gallon — has helped spur interest and sales of electric vehicles. But there’s another factor at play here as consumers seek out affordable options: an abundance of expiring leases, the Financial Times reported. EV leases were a popular choice in the early 2020s, and now that they’ve expired, hundreds of thousands of pre-owned EVs are …

New EV sales drop 28% in Q1 2026, but used EVs surge 12% to near-record levels

New EV sales drop 28% in Q1 2026, but used EVs surge 12% to near-record levels

The US electric vehicle market has split into two diverging realities. New EV sales cratered 28% year-over-year in Q1 2026 to just 212,600 units, according to new data from Cox Automotive — but used EV sales surged 12% to 93,500 units, with prices now within $1,300 of equivalent gas cars. The data, presented in Cox Automotive’s Q1 2026 Industry Insights call on March 25, reveals the clearest picture yet of how the federal tax credit’s expiration is reshaping the EV market — and creating what may be the best buying opportunity in the history of electric vehicles. New EV sales collapse after tax credit death The numbers are stark. Americans purchased just 212,600 new EVs in the first quarter, down from 296,304 in Q1 2025 — a 28% decline. EV market share fell to an estimated 5.8% of total new vehicle sales, matching Q4 2025’s share and well below the 7.5% peak reached in Q3 2025. The culprit is obvious: the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired on September 30, 2025, and nothing has replaced …

The first country to BAN the sale of new gas cars is doing just fine

The first country to BAN the sale of new gas cars is doing just fine

Ethiopia made history in 2024 by becoming the first country to ban the sale and import of new internal combustion-powered vehicles. Despite the predictions of the anti-EV hysterics, they’re doing just fine — but the process hasn’t been without its challenges! We first covered Ethiopia’s decision to ban the sale and import of ICE vehicles back in 2024, but while there were certainly environmental considerations involved, the deciding factors were economical, rather than ecological. Through 2023, Ethiopia had been importing massive amounts of refined petroleum imports — $4 billion on refined fuel imports alone, according to Angolan Mining Oil and Gas — making petroleum one of the country’s largest import expenses and a major drain on its scarce foreign exchange budget. With electric vehicles on the other hand, Ethopia has been able to assert its energy independence by creating its own clean fuel. “Over the last decade,” write the environment watchdogs at Climate Action Tracker. “Ethiopia has prioritized the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Koysha hydropower projects, with capacity of nearly 6 GW and …

In an effort keep iX3 wait times from stretching into 2027, AutoNews is reporting that BMW will add a second production shift at its new Debrecen plant in Hungary – the company’s first factory dedicated entirely to the production of EVs Advertisement – scroll for more content BMW says the plant will eventually build some 150,000 cars a year, though it’s currently still ramping up …

Sales of the ultra-fast Xiaomi SU7 Ultra have ultra-plummeted

Sales of the ultra-fast Xiaomi SU7 Ultra have ultra-plummeted

The ultra-fast Xiaomi SU7 Ultra made enough headlines with its astonishing 0-60 sprints and record Nürburgring lap times to drum up around 3,000 sales per month – but the good times seem to have come to an end, and Xiaomi sold just 45 units in December. It’s hard to overestimate how much digital ink was used telling the story of Xiaomi’s world-beating, supercar-baiting SU7 Ultra hyper sedan. It was fast, looked like a better-looking version of a Porsche Taycan, and – at just 529,900 yuan (~75,000 USD) – it was relatively cheap for a 1,548 hp, 217 mph EV. The SU7 was so good, in fact, it’s rumored that Ferrari bought one to benchmark it against its own upcoming, first-ever electric car. So, what happened? Too much hype SU7 Ultra, via Xiaomi Auto/Weibo. Almost from the start, the SU7 Ultra was a victim of its own hype. After it launched with more than 1500 Plaid-pounding horsepower, early takers were disappointed to learn that the SU7 they were allowed to buy had been neutered by the safety nannies to the tune …

Plug-in Porsche models outsold ICE in Europe for the first time

Plug-in Porsche models outsold ICE in Europe for the first time

Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid Porsche models outsold its ICE-powered models on its home continent in 2025 – and nearly 1 in 3 Porsches sold was 100% electric. As we already alluded to earlier this week, Porsche’s global sales saw a significant decline in 2025, dropping more than 10% from 310,718 to “just”  279,449 units – but Porsche executives aren’t too worried. “This development is in line with our expectations, and is due to supply gaps for the 718 and Macan combustion-engined models, the continuing weaker demand for exclusive products in China, and our value-oriented supply management,” says Matthias Becker, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “The response to the launch of the Cayenne Electric at the end of 2025 also shows,” Becker adds, “that Porsche is meeting customer expectations with its innovative and high-performance products.” The big news, however, was buried in the report: Advertisement – scroll for more content In Europe, for the first time, more electrified cars were delivered than pure combustion-engined models (57.9 per cent electrification share), with …

Tesla annual sales decline 9% as it’s overtaken by BYD as global EV leader

Tesla annual sales decline 9% as it’s overtaken by BYD as global EV leader

Tesla annual sales have fallen for the second year in a row, a drop fueled by the removal of the federal tax credit in the U.S. and competition from Chinese automakers. Tesla delivered 1.63 million vehicles globally in 2025, a 9% fall from 1.79 million in 2024, according to figures released by the company. Notably, about 50,850 of those vehicles are considered “other models,” a collection that includes the Cybertruck as well as its older Model X and Model S. Tesla reported fourth-quarter sales of 418,227, a 15.6% drop from the same period last year and far more than analysts expected. Tesla stock fell more than 2% as the market opened after the New Year holiday. Tesla, once the global EV sales leader, has seen its market share in Europe and China eroded by the rise of Chinese competitors. China’s BYD, which delivered 2.26 million EVs in 2025, has now taken the top global EV sales spot. Tesla is also facing more competition in the United States — although notably not from Chinese automakers which …
