Pentagon Disturbed as Its Fleet of Drones Is Left Bobbing in the Ocean When Elon Musk’s Starlink Fails

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Two dozen unmanned surface vessels — autonomous boat drones, basically — were left floating in the Pacific ocean after a massive outage of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service left them adrift. That event, first reported by Reuters, left the experimental robots disconnected and bobbing in the ocean for nearly an hour off the coast of California. It was one of several Pentagon experiments disrupted by the Starlink blackout, according to Reuters. That global outage left millions of Starlink customers in the dark back in August of 2025, dealing a blow to the company’s image as an always-on satellite internet provider. While service was eventually restored, the incident left customers frustrated and analysts concerned. According to the company website, Starlink offers “high-speed, low-latency internet with more than 99.9 percent average uptime and reliable connectivity around the globe.” That remaining 0.1 percent clearly represents a lingering pain point, though. Pentagon officials, who are increasingly leveraging Elon Musk’s pet internet company to …

House effort to end Trump’s war with Iran fails by one vote

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled House voted Thursday to reject a resolution ordering President Donald Trump to end the war with Iran. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The vote was 213-214, almost entirely along party lines, as Republicans overwhelmingly stick with Trump, refusing to slap guardrails on his military campaign. Just one Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, voted for it, while one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against it. Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, who previously voted to end the Iran war, voted “present.” Three Republicans did not vote. The measure, proposed by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., “directs the President to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” with exceptions for extreme cases under the War Powers Resolution, “unless explicitly authorized” by Congress. EU says WhatsApp AI terms update fails to resolve antitrust concerns – POLITICO

“Replacing the legal ban with pricing that has a similar effect does not change our preliminary view that Meta’s conduct appears to be an abuse of its dominant position,” Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera said in a statement. The EU executive is considering whether to impose rare interim measures on Meta to restore access. The updated charge sheet follows Meta’s March announcement that it had replaced the ban with a new pricing framework. The tech giant said at the time that the change in Europe is intended to provide the Commission with “the time it needs to conclude its investigation.” Meta maintains that the AI sector is “highly competitive,” and that rival AI services remain available to customers through app stores, search engines, email providers and operating systems. “The European Commission is proposing to use its regulatory powers to enable some of the largest companies in the world to use the paid-for WhatsApp Business product for free,” Joshua Breckman, a spokesperson for Meta, said in response to the Commission’s chargesheet. Breckman added that interim measures would …

US Military Says It’s Ready to Resume Iran Fighting if Diplomacy Fails

US Military Says It’s Ready to Resume Iran Fighting if Diplomacy Fails

By Idrees Ali and Phil Stewart WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) – The top U.S. general said on Wednesday U.S. troops stood ready to resume fighting if Tehran failed to strike a negotiated settlement as the Trump administration sought to portray the war as a decisive victory against Iran. The remarks came a day after President Donald Trump pulled back from the brink of a threatened civilization-ending ‌assault on Iran on Tuesday night, two ‌hours before a deadline he had set for Tehran to open the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.  U.S. and Iranian officials are set to meet in Pakistan for talks on Friday. “We hope that Iran chooses a lasting peace,” General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Pentagon news conference. “A ceasefire is a pause and the joint force remains ready, if ordered or called upon, to resume combat operations — with the same speed and precision as we’ve demonstrated over the last 38 days.” Despite the ceasefire, Saudi Arabia’s crucial East-West oil pipeline, currently its only outlet for …

NASA Spacecraft’s Toilet Fails Hours Into Ten-Day Journey to Moon

NASA Spacecraft’s Toilet Fails Hours Into Ten-Day Journey to Moon

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech The four crew members of NASA’s historic Artemis 2 mission around the Moon may be on one of the most epic journeys in human history — but they’re already encountering noisome sewage issues inside their cramped capsule. NASA’s director of flight operations, Norm Knight, told reporters that a controller issue had caused the fan of the space agency’s newfangled Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) — the spacecraft’s toilet, in regular language — to jam. That meant that the crew members were temporarily only able to use the toilet for Number Two, not One, before finally getting it fixed hours later. “In the meantime they’re getting their contingency — their backup waste management capabilities specifically for urine,” NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan said during the space agency’s livestream, as quoted by Space.com. “The fecal collection of the toilet, that specific capability, can still be used with the waste management system aboard Orion.” The “Collapsible Contingency Urinal” eventually filled up and …

Migrants leave France hours after Mahmood fails to agree new beach patrol deal

According to Le Monde, Xavier Ducept, France’s junior minister for the sea, told a French parliamentary commission of inquiry last week: “What we want is for … the British to contribute to funding interception systems, which are very expensive. But they must not make this funding conditional on a type of efficiency that could be extremely dangerous for migrants, for the (security) services, and for France … rescue comes first. And the law.” Source link

Ben White booed by England fans as second-string squad fails to impress Tuchel

After a lights show at Wembley, it is time to welcome the players onto the pitch for the national anthems. There was a rather strange moment in the tunnel before the sides emerged as Uruguay captain Valverde was stood on his own in the tunnel, with none of his teammates there for quite some time. Valverde, after his hat-trick in the Champions League against Manchester City a few weeks ago, clearly keen to get going. England took quite a while to emerge from the home dressing room. “Himno Nacional del Uruguay” followed by “God Save The King”. A reminder of the teams: England: Trafford, Livramento, Tomori, Maguire, Spence, Henderson, Garner, Foden, Madueke, Rashford, Solanke.Substitutes: Ramsdale, Pickford, Steele, Hall, Wharton, Stones, Palmer, White, Mainoo, Calvert-Lewin, Barnes, Bowen. Uruguay: Muslera, R Araujo, Ugarte, De Arrascaeta, Varela, Canobbio, Valverde, Olivera, M Araujo, Piquerez, Aguirre.Substitutes: Rochet, Mele, Gimenez, Caceres, Sanabria, De La Cruz, Martinez, Nunez, Pellistri, Vina, Rodriguez, Vinas, Torres, Rodriguez. Markets plunge, oil hits 0 as Trump fails to reassure Wall St.

Markets plunge, oil hits $100 as Trump fails to reassure Wall St.

President Donald Trump is used to bending financial markets to his will. But with the war in Iran, he may have reached the limit of his ability to do so. On Friday, the S&P 500 closed down 1.7% and notched its fifth-straight weekly decline, its worst stretch since 2022 and a sign of rapidly faltering confidence in a swift resolution to the Iran war. Since the U.S. attacked Iran on Feb. 28, the S&P 500 has declined about 7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.7% Friday and has lost nearly 4,000 points since the start of the war. It is now down more than 10% from its most recent high, a correction in technical terms. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell further into correction territory Friday, closing down 2% and off 13% since its record close in October. Oil prices also rose sharply, with U.S. crude topping $100 a barrel and global Brent crude at approximately $114 at around 4 p.m. ET. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note surged to 4.4%, the highest since last …

White paper’s schools focus fails to put children first

White paper’s schools focus fails to put children first

More from this theme Recent articles Like everyone else in education, I’d been waiting for the schools white paper for a long time.  On the day of its release, I was up late, spending time analysing both the white paper and the SEND consultation paper. It took me seven hours.   Because I read them so intensely, I noticed many things should have been included but aren’t, and that’s really starting to frustrate me.   At first, I couldn’t put my finger on why so many aspects of true inclusion, things I felt were vital, were missing.  Then it dawned on me: even though the language is about the rights of children, the Department for Education documents are all very much centred on the school.   There is little to no meaningful mention of: Intersectionality, particularly between race and SEND  Racism, both the barriers and the harm it causes Trauma-informed practice as a systemic necessity  Emotionally based school avoidance Elective home education Children missing in education  Although the white paper refers to “white working class” children 25 times, …

Scottish Assisted Dying Bill Fails – Humanists UK

Scottish Assisted Dying Bill Fails – Humanists UK

The Scottish Parliament has today voted against Liam McArthur MSP’s Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill, by 69 votes to 57, thereby rejecting legislation that would have legalised assisted dying in Scotland.  The Bill: The Bill would have allowed eligible terminally ill adults in Scotland to legally request an assisted death. To qualify, a person would have needed to: Have lived in Scotland for at least 12 months Be registered with a Scottish GP Be terminally ill with six months or fewer left to live Have mental capacity Individuals would first have signed an initial declaration, been assessed independently by two medics, including consideration of any pressure or coercion, and then have completed a reflection period of 14 days, reducible to 48 hours if death was expected sooner.  If they still wished to proceed, they would have made a second declaration before being provided with an approved substance, which the Bill said must be self-administered. The scrutiny: Liam McArthur MSP first set out his proposal in September 2021, after which it went through …
