The House passed a measure to halt the war in Iran on Thursday, as Democrats mounted a last-minute bid to constrain the escalating conflict before lawmakers left Washington for a month-long recess. The effort led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington) passed by a vote of 214-208. Four Republicans — Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania), Thomas Massie (Kentucky), Warren Davidson (Ohio) and Tom Barrett (Michigan) — joined Democrats in supporting the measure. Source link

‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ review: An out-of-this-world comedy

Next to the return of the doves to the backyard, nothing has made me happier recently than tumbling through the 10 episodes of the first season of “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” the third spin-off from “The Big Bang Theory.” Premiering Thursday on HBO Max — the first straying of the franchise from CBS, and taking advantage of the expressive opportunities premium cable affords — violence and language mostly — which does not make it any whit less adorable. (Nobody gets naked, which would make it less adorable.) Like “Lou Grant” extracting a newspaper drama from the remains of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” or the earlier “Big Bang” prequel “Young Sheldon,” “Stuart” takes its players — secondary characters in the original — and places them somewhere quite different: a single-camera, parallel-realities science-fiction adventure comedy. StubHub is getting a red card from some World Cup fans Two World Cup customers are suing the New York-based ticket-selling company, alleging “false and misleading” advertising that left them without tickets or a refund for the World Cup games they paid to attend. In federal court in New York last week, two Californians — Julia Reeker Moghal and Reuben Renteria — sued StubHub seeking monetary damages and a ban on the company selling World Cup tickets. The lawsuit aims to become a class action and comes after weeks of fierce criticism and complaints from customers regarding the company’s practices. Throughout the World Cup, videos have emerged on Instagram and TikTok of StubHub customers describing their nightmare experiences with the ticket-selling platform. Some said they had purchased tickets to World Cup games as early as November of last year, booked flights and hotels and arranged travel plans, then StubHub notified them days to weeks before the match of a refund for their tickets, which they never requested. The defence investment plan sets out the UK government’s funding choices for the British armed forces. Over a year late, it allocates an additional £15 billion to the ministry of defence. Its priorities are the nuclear deterrent and submarine programmes, a sixth generation fighter jet and an expansion of autonomous systems and guided weapons. Across land, sea and air, the defence investment plan points towards a force that depends more on space-based systems, not less. So it is disappointing that the new plan is unclear on its long-term plan for space. Both the 2025 strategic defence review and the 2026 defence investment plan tend to speak of space-based capabilities in the broadest terms, providing no clear sense of direction in many areas. The newest planp is following the tradition of past defence reviews by approaching space as a list-making exercise, where generic capability categories are listed as desirable and important but no prioritisation is made.
