France : Firefighters face fatigue after days of relentless fighting

France : Firefighters face fatigue after days of relentless fighting

Massive forest fires have forced the evacuation of some 200,000 people in southwestern France and central Spain, with residents fleeing towns near Madrid and Bordeaux on Friday as flames raged out of control. Firefighters and authorities in both European countries were caught off guard by the virulence of the fires, which were fueled by high temperatures and the long-term effects of climate change. Firefighters in Spain admitted the fires were so fast and violent that they could not be tackled head on. Keywords for this article Source link

The World Is on Fire: Why Recycling Bottles Won’t Save It

The World Is on Fire: Why Recycling Bottles Won’t Save It

The world is on fire. Literally. From Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland, to the Canadian wildfires impacting North America, the planet is in a deep crisis. Record temperatures in Europe have led to tens of thousands of heat-related deaths. Add the geopolitical tensions across the planet, and the news gives us good reason to be anxious and uncertain. In his 2024 release Terrible Beauty, Auden Schendler outlines our complicity in the climate crisis. At the same time, he places even more responsibility on the corporations that sell us toxic products in the first place. As a long-time climate activist, Schendler claims not only that the environmental movement is failing, but that it is reinforcing the ineffective, entrenched systems that we need to reorganize to make the difference. Drawing on 25 years of experience in corporate sustainability leadership at Aspen One, Schendler shows that voluntary emissions reductions, individual carbon footprints, and corporate greenwashing serve as dangerous distractions to the real issues lying underneath: We have built in measures such as minor efficiency upgrades like replacing conventional …

what can the UK and other nations learn from Australia’s world-leading fire response systems?

what can the UK and other nations learn from Australia’s world-leading fire response systems?

Wildfires are becoming a feature of the UK’s hotter, drier climate, as they are in much of Europe. In July 2026, major fires swept through parts of the UK in a matter of days – notably setting Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano in the centre of Edinburgh, alight. The Scottish Greens labelled wildfires a “national emergency” after that fire. Meanwhile, the Welsh government activated its crisis plan to tackle ongoing blazes in north Wales, while raising concerns about a shortage of helicopters to manage the flames. Other UK fire services said they were under extreme pressure. In 2025, fire and rescue services in England and Wales responded to nearly 1,000 wildfire incidents, beating the previous record from 2022. Expert projections predict more days like this lie ahead. Wildfires spread across north Wales in July 2026. Over a million Britons live in fire-prone landscapes, according to Ordnance Survey data. “The homes identified … are located within a patchwork landscape, generally without managed firebreaks as is common in other parts of the world,” said Duncan Moss, co-chair …

These 3 Fire TV Sticks are on sale at Best Buy – here’s the one I recommend (and why)

These 3 Fire TV Sticks are on sale at Best Buy – here’s the one I recommend (and why)

Maria Diaz/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Best Buy has some legitimately great deals on Amazon devices right now, including three Fire TV Sticks priced as low as they were during Prime Day. For a limited time, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is now $35 (save $25), the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is $25 (save $25), and the Fire TV Stick HD is only $20 (save $15). Also: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 vs. Moto Razr Ultra: I’ve spent time with both, here’s what I prefer I bought the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus at $25 during Prime Day last month, and it was (and still is) the lowest price we’ve ever seen this streaming device hit. Amazon Prime Day is a yearly shopping event where Amazon discounts many products, including its own devices, so seeing the same price from last Prime Day at Best Buy just bolsters the legitimacy of this deal. As its name suggests, the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus supports 4K-resolution TVs, so you can stream …

The Things Left Behind in the Hong Kong Apartment Fire

The Things Left Behind in the Hong Kong Apartment Fire

A mother’s gift to her daughter. A toddler’s favorite pacifier. The glasses he wore every day. His wedding ring, kept in a box with hers. For months after a devastating fire tore through seven Hong Kong apartment towers last year, the complex was sealed off to residents. This spring, residents were allowed to return to the ruins of the complex, Wang Fuk Court. Some homes were eerily frozen in time, with bowls still filled with food. In other apartments, residents sifted through the ashes with mesh baskets searching for anything that survived. The fire killed 168 people, most likely because of unscrupulous contractors who used shoddy materials. Behind that toll are individual losses, told here through what people carried out of the debris. We asked residents who lost their loved ones to share their stories, in their own words. Their accounts below have been translated from Cantonese and condensed and edited for clarity. Shirley Ng, 54.Her daughter and husband died in the fire. She found the remnants of her daughter’s iPad in the debris. Whenever I …

My Fire TV stick was constantly buffering in 4K until I added this one cheap accessory

My Fire TV stick was constantly buffering in 4K until I added this one cheap accessory

Streaming video isn’t supposed to be a frustrating process — until it is. For months, I blamed several culprits, including my ISP, my router placement, my video service, and even the weather outside. Additionally, I restarted the router more times than I can count, moved the useful Fire TV Stick around the cabinet, and canceled and re-subscribed to Prime Video to see if it made a difference. None of it did. My Fire TV Stick 4K would play fine for the first 10 minutes of a show, then the dreaded spinning wheel would appear right when things got good, usually at the least opportune moment. I’d pause, wait, unpause, and watch it happen again ten minutes later. Eventually, I stopped trusting the stick for anything I actually cared about watching. Turns out the fix was a cheap, five-minute setup, and it had nothing to do with any of the things I’d spent months blaming. Woman dies week after Bangkok bar fire, raising toll to 34

The Erawan Emergency Medical Centre, operated by Bangkok city authorities, said that Apinya Sukthongsa, 20, died in hospital early on Sunday. Around 70 people were injured in the fire and 13 were still in intensive care units, the Erawan centre said. Thailand’s approach to health and safety regulations – particularly in bars and nightclubs – has long raised concerns. In 2009, a blaze tore through Bangkok’s Santika club during New Year celebrations, killing 67 people and injuring more than 200. Source link
