Waymo begins fully autonomous ops with 6th-gen Driver, targets 1M weekly rides

Waymo is now running its 6th-generation Driver without safety drivers on public roads, marking the beginning of fully autonomous operations with the company’s latest and most cost-effective hardware stack. The announcement, authored by Waymo VP of Engineering Satish Jeyachandran, confirms that the 6th-generation system, first unveiled in August 2024, is now validated for driverless operations across multiple cities. Waymo describes it as the product of seven years of service and nearly 200 million fully autonomous miles logged across 10+ major U.S. cities. Streamlined hardware, lower cost, broader capability The 6th-gen Waymo Driver cuts the sensor count dramatically: 13 cameras (down from 29), four lidars (down from five), and six radar units, a 42% reduction in total sensors compared to the 5th-gen system running on the Jaguar I-PACE fleet. Despite the reduction, Waymo claims the new suite delivers greater resolution, range, and compute power. At the core of the camera system sits a 17-megapixel imager that Waymo says is a generation ahead of other automotive cameras in resolution, dynamic range, and low-light sensitivity. The lidar system …

Best Samsung tablets 2025, fully tested by an expert

The Galaxy Tab S11 is the latest in Samsung’s premium tablet range. There are two of these high-priced, flagship models to choose from: the Tab S11 (£799) and Tab S11 Ultra (£1,199). These replace the Tab S10+ and Tab S10 Ultra, but you can still buy the Galaxy Tab S10 FE (from £499) and Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ (from £649), both of which sit in the mid-range section of the tablet market. The Galaxy Tab A11, meanwhile, is the cheapest of Samsung’s tablets, starting at just £149. There’s a Galaxy Tab A11+ model, too, which has a larger screen. Samsung’s AI features are predominantly reserved for the pricier tablets, including the ability to erase unwanted objects from pictures or extract text from screenshots. The Tab S11 models have the highest display resolutions, as well as extra storage and increased performance speeds. The S11 models also have two rear cameras, compared to the Tab S10 FE and Tab A11’s single lenses. Only the Tab S11 and Tab S10 FE support Samsung’s S Pen stylus for on-the-go …

Empress’s crown dropped by Louvre heist thieves to be fully restored

The crown of French Empress Eugenie, which was abandoned by fleeing thieves who staged a brazen robbery at the Louvre last year, is nearly intact and will be fully restored, the museum said Wednesday. The thieves who robbed the famed Paris museum last October made off with an estimated €88 million ($104 million) in jewels, but dropped the empress’s diamond- and emerald-studded crown as they escaped, leaving it crushed and broken. Investigators have yet to locate the other jewels, but recovered the dropped crown. The museum said the crown was damaged when the thieves tried to remove it through a narrow hole they had sawed in the glass case where it was displayed. Iraqi Army Fully Takes Over Key Base Following US Withdrawal

Iraqi Army Fully Takes Over Key Base Following US Withdrawal

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. forces have fully withdrawn from an air base in western Iraq in implementation of an agreement with the Iraqi government, Iraqi officials said Saturday. Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 to wind down a U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq by September 2025, with U.S. forces departing bases where they had been stationed. However, a small unit of U.S. military advisers and support personnel remained. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in October told journalists that the agreement originally stipulated a full pullout of U.S. forces from the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq by September. But “developments in Syria” since then required maintaining a “small unit” of between 250 and 350 advisers and security personnel at the base. Now all U.S. personnel have departed. Iraqi Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah oversaw the assignment of tasks and duties to various military units at the base on Saturday following the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the Iraqi Army’s full assumption of control over …

COVID-19 infection may alter brain microstructure even in people who fully recover

COVID-19 infection may alter brain microstructure even in people who fully recover

New research utilizing advanced brain imaging techniques reveals that SARS-CoV-2 infection may induce lasting changes in the brain, even in individuals who feel fully recovered. The study identified specific alterations in tissue microstructure and chemical levels that distinguish people with Long COVID from those who recovered without lingering symptoms, as well as from those never infected. These findings were published in the journal Brain, Behavior, & Immunity – Health. The global spread of COVID-19 resulted in a significant number of people experiencing persistent health issues known as Long COVID. Common symptoms include severe fatigue, cognitive dysfunction often called brain fog, and sleep disturbances. The research team at Griffith University’s National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases had previously studied Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). They noted that Long COVID symptoms frequently overlap with those observed in ME/CFS. This observation prompted the team to investigate whether similar brain mechanisms might be at play. Medical professionals have also noted that even individuals who recover from the acute phase of COVID-19 sometimes demonstrate subtle cognitive slowing. Previous imaging …

T. rex took 40 years to become fully grown

Tyrannosaurus rex was a late bloomer Science Photo Library / Alamy The largest-ever analysis of Tyrannosaurus rex fossils suggests the giant and fierce Cretaceous predator was a late bloomer, taking 35 to 40 years to reach maturity. The findings also further the debate about whether there were several T. rex species instead of just one and whether smaller specimens, once thought to be juveniles, are in fact a more diminutive species called Nanotyrannus. Based on studies done two decades ago, it had been thought that T. rex reached its maximum weight of 8 tonnes in around two decades and that the animals probably only lived until they were 30 years old. “The last big T. rex growth studies were done in the early 2000s, based on, at most, seven specimens,” says Holly Ballard at Oklahoma State University. “This wasn’t the fault of the researchers, this is just what was available at the time.” This time, Ballard and her colleagues were able to sample the thigh and shin bones of 17 individuals, ranging in age from …

These 3 Habits Have Been Proven To Fully Protect Your Relationship As You Age | Beth O’Brien

Our idealistic view of relationships is based on what is often projected in romantic comedies or attractive social media pictures. This view implies that in the best relationships, partners are happy, loving, and attuned to each other the majority of the time. This assumption is false. In reality, couples in healthy relationships experience attunement about one-third of the time. The rest of the time, partners are in the process of rupturing their relationship and then repairing their mistakes. You may find it helpful to view your relationship as moving through an ever-evolving process of attunement, misattunement, and re-attunement. If you are in a committed relationship, it’s time to become an expert at making repairs. As couples age and life gets fuller, staying connected takes more than love or good intentions; it comes down to a few habits that act as a buffer against resentment and emotional distance. These 3 habits have been proven to fully protect your relationship as you age: 1. Talking face-to-face The eyes are part of our brain, and because our brain needs to …
