Trevor Milton Is Back And Wants To Produce AI Powered “Fully Autonomous Corporate Jets”

Trevor Milton, founder and former CEO of the now-bankrupt Nikola, is trying to mount a “comeback story”. Through social media, interviews, and bold public claims, Milton once convinced investors that Nikola was on the verge of delivering breakthrough technology with trucks. Now he’s going to attempt the same in the aircraft business, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. He has reemerged in the aviation sector through his involvement with SyberJet, a company focused on developing a small business jet known as the SJ30. The aircraft itself is not new; its design dates back decades and has changed hands multiple times through bankruptcies and restructurings. SyberJet acquired the program and has since promoted plans to bring the jet into full-scale production, emphasizing its speed, range, and efficiency relative to competitors in the light jet category. Milton’s involvement has drawn attention because it places him back in a leadership context tied to capital-intensive, technology-driven manufacturing—an environment similar to the one in which he previously operated.  SyberJet’s core asset, the SJ30, is designed to fly …

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas’ $12m home with ‘fully immersive’ indoor experience

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas’ sprawling Westchester County home is full of extravagance and luxury, but despite its appeal, the couple is struggling to find a buyer. Nearly two years after they listed the eight-bedroom, 11.5-bathroom estate in Irvington for a whopping $12 million, after buying the riverfront property for $4.5 million in 2019, Catherine, 56, and Michael, 81, have dropped the asking price by $2.25 million. The listing was removed in April 2025 and put back on the market for $10 million the following month, only to be taken down again before it was relisted on March 19, 2026, for a reduced price of $9.75 million, according to realtor.com. The couple moved into the home after downsizing from their 15,000-square-foot mansion in nearby Bedford, which they reportedly sold for almost $20.5 million.  Recommended videoYou may also likeWATCH: Inside Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas’ epic love story The property, known as Longmeadow, spreads across more than 11,600 square feet on a 12-acre lot and “is both grand in scale and intimate in feel,” according to the …

The Download: OpenAI is building a fully automated researcher, and a psychedelic trial blind spot

By September, the company plans to build “an autonomous AI research intern” that can take on a small number of specific research problems. The intern will be the precursor to the fully automated multi-agent system, which is slated to debut in 2028.  In an exclusive interview this week, OpenAI’s chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, talked me through the plans. Find out what I discovered.  —Will Douglas Heaven  Mind-altering substances are (still) falling short in clinical trials  Over the last decade, we’ve seen scientific interest in psychedelic drugs explode. Compounds like psilocybin—which is found in magic mushrooms—are being explored for all sorts of health applications, including treatments for depression, PTSD, addiction, and even obesity. But two studies out earlier this week demonstrate just how difficult it is to study these drugs.   For me, they show just how overhyped these substances have become. Find out why here.  —Jessica Hamzelou  This story first appeared in The Checkup, MIT Technology Review’s weekly biotech newsletter. Sign up to receive it in your inbox every Wednesday.  Read more: What do psychedelic drugs do to our brains? OpenAI is throwing everything into building a fully automated researcher

“I think it’s going to be a long time before we can really be like, okay, this problem is solved,” he says. “Until you can really trust the systems, you definitely want to have restrictions in place.” Pachocki thinks that very powerful models should be deployed in sandboxes, cut off from anything they could break or use to cause harm.  AI tools have already been used to come up with novel cyberattacks. Some worry that they will be used to design synthetic pathogens that could be used as bioweapons. You can insert any number of evil-scientist scare stories here. “I definitely think there are worrying scenarios that we can imagine,” says Pachocki.  “It’s going to be a very weird thing. It’s extremely concentrated power that’s in some ways unprecedented,” says Pachocki. “Imagine you get to a world where you have a data center that can do all the work that OpenAI or Google can do. Things that in the past required large human organizations would now be done by a couple of people.” “I think …

Why convoys cannot fully protect oil tankers from Iran attacks

Why convoys cannot fully protect oil tankers from Iran attacks

PARIS: The Israeli-US war on Iran has provoked a reaction from Tehran that has effectively choked a large chunk of the world’s oil supply, and untangling the blockage will take a regional effort beyond what is currently being proposed, experts have told AFP. President Donald Trump has repeatedly urged other global powers to send warships to escort convoys of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Iran has effectively closed the strait since the United States and Israel began a war on the Islamic republic last month, sending global oil prices up by more than 40 per cent. Iran has however shown it has a much wider reach and can disrupt supplies throughout the Persian Gulf and beyond, simply by firing off a clutch of drones or a missile. Trump has acknowledged the dangers of this kind of attack, at least in the strait. “It’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close-range missile somewhere along, …

LAFD testimony details missed chances to fully put out Lachman fire

LAFD testimony details missed chances to fully put out Lachman fire

Jacob Ulibarri spent about six hours on New Year’s Day last year squashing hot spots where the Lachman fire had burned. The rookie Los Angeles firefighter arrived sometime after 7 a.m., when the smoky areas were all over and easy to see. By the time the next crew swapped with his that afternoon, they were scarcer: “One every 30 minutes, roughly,” Ulibarri recalled. At that point, Battalion Chief Martin Mullen, who was running the mop-up operation, had walked three laps around the perimeter of the fire. He recalled one hot spot he saw about 10 a.m., which crews hit with water. Later in the afternoon, Mullen did his fourth and last loop and left the area for good. He decided to leave the hoses out overnight, just in case. Over the next two days, a series of communication failures and questionable decisions led crews to leave the area prematurely, with embers from the small Jan. 1 fire later reigniting into the devastating Palisades fire. A firefighter picking up hoses on Jan. 2 found crackling, red-hot …

Dowman makes history again… and the hype is fully justified

Dowman makes history again… and the hype is fully justified

Chants of “super Maxy Dowman” from the away end accompanied the midfielder’s every move. With 16-year-old defender Marli Salmon also starting, Arsenal became the first Premier League side to start a competitive game with two players at that age. Arteta said: “When the ball is bouncing all over the place, and people are all over his back, Max is just incredible, especially with the speed he delivers. “I’m very proud of him and Marli, and that says a lot about their personality and the quality they have. They need to continue to work and this is the first step for them to take. I think everyone feels involved. “We have the desire that, game by game, we can get closer to things that we can achieve.” Arsenal’s journey now takes them to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday in the Champions League, and the prospect of Arteta’s second FA Cup triumph remains in his grasp. They were far from their best here, with Mansfield – 60 places below Arsenal in the football pyramid, and with a squad …

I’ve been there several times over the decades.  When the eventuality comes to pass, unless you have a good backup of your data, you could be in for a long and frustrating uphill battle. Having your data backed up is one thing. Knowing that you also might have to purchase a new system, install all of the apps you need, find the licenses that go with those apps, and configure your operating system as you had it can be a daunting task. But what if you could do a backup of your computer that includes everything? Operating system, settings, apps, accounts… everything? Now, imagine you have …

Wiim Sound review: This smart speaker is so close to fully replacing my Sonos

ZDNET’s key takeaways The Wiim Sound smart speaker is available in Black and White for $299. It offers great sound, a neat touchscreen display, and an inoffensive design. The display is more for aesthetics than utility, and Wiim doesn’t support Apple Music or AirPlay. Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. There’s a shift in the smart speaker market. More companies are investing in multi-room streaming, intuitive displays, and higher fidelity. The Wiim Sound smart speaker is the latest player in this game, eyeing competitors such as Sonos’ Era 100, Amazon’s Echo Show, and Apple’s HomePod 2.  The Wiim Sound speaker both lacks features compared to competitors, but also offers up some of its own. Unlike Sonos and Apple, Wiim has a small touchscreen display. Unlike Amazon, its real estate across the speaker is modest. That milestone includes both digital-only and print home delivery subscriptions (which feature online access by default). The Dublin-based Irish Times Group (which includes the Irish Examiner based in Cork) has around 150,000 subscribers across print and digital. Ruadhán Mac Cormaic, who has edited The Irish Times for three years and spent 17 years at the title, told Press Gazette said: “It’s important for the organisation. It’s a milestone, it’s not the destination. And there are other milestones we have to hit. “I don’t want to pretend that… we have the answer to every question. The world is moving too fast to be certain about anything. But it validates and affirms everything we’ve been doing for the last ten years.” The former assistant editor, foreign affairs correspondent and legal affairs correspondent said the newsroom has gone from thinking about being digital first, to being audience first …
