Stop tolerating GNOME’s limitations — here are 5 Linux desktops that give you real control

Stop tolerating GNOME’s limitations — here are 5 Linux desktops that give you real control

You don’t have to stick to GNOME if you don’t want to. There are plenty of desktop environments, or those close to it, to switch to from GNOME that offer much more freedom. Some people prefer more control and power over what happens on their computers. Just keep in mind that if you’re new, you probably shouldn’t be messing with advanced changes unless you’re okay with bricking your desktop or laptop. KDE Plasma is great for customization You want to have the most control Credit: KDE KDE Plasma is the best choice to switch to if you think GNOME is too restrictive. GNOME removes features like desktop icons and minimize buttons to keep a distraction-free space. This means you have to install third-party tools to get basic functions back. KDE Plasma takes the opposite path by letting you change every animation and panel location without needing those third-party extensions that can break during updates. You get total control right within the system, letting you adjust your window decorations, cursor styles, and color schemes without extra tools. …

Masters Gnomes a Hot Commodity at Augusta National Amid Speculation This Is Final Year of Production

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — John James arrived at Augusta National an hour before the gates opened to patrons for the 90th Masters — all for the purpose of securing a 13 1/2-inch tall gnome. “Had to have one,” said James, who was attending the Masters from Wyckoff, New Jersey. “It’s a novelty.” This is the 10th and perhaps final year Augusta National will sell the limited edition gnome, which features the traditional old man with a white beard in colorful golf attire. Each year’s gnome is different, with the 2026 edition featuring the character dressed in khaki pants with a white-and-green striped polo shirt and blue vest holding an umbrella in one hand and a Masters-themed cup in the other. The gnomes have become wildly popular — and increasingly valuable — over the last decade. With only about 1,000 available each day, the gnomes regularly sell out within an hour each morning at the merchandise shop before being restocked the following day. This year’s gnome sells for $59.50 plus tax and is only available at …

GNOME’s new app is the beautiful media player Linux deserved

GNOME’s new app is the beautiful media player Linux deserved

For years, watching a video on Linux often meant choosing between a powerhouse media player with endless knobs or a dated default app that hadn’t seen a modern UI refresh in a while. Somewhere between those two extremes, GNOME quietly introduced something new. It’s called Showtime, or simply Video Player, and if your first reaction is “that looks… suspiciously simple,” you’re not wrong. But under that clean surface is a very intentional design philosophy. Showtime isn’t trying to replace every media player on Linux. It’s trying to solve one very specific problem: playing video without turning it into a technical project. GNOME’s new player is built for the modern desktop A GTK4 and libadwaita app that actually feels native Screenshot: Roine Bertelson/MUO One of the first things you notice about Showtime is how well it fits into a modern GNOME desktop. That’s because it was built from scratch using GTK4 and libadwaita, the same toolkit and design framework behind most of GNOME’s newer apps. If you’ve used older Linux media players, you’ve probably seen the …
