Thom Browne’s design sensibility might be sharp and spare, but his runway shows are lush, maximalist performances. Browne’s fall 2026 show at GQ Bowl in San Francisco was no exception. The collection revolved around the shrunken men’s suit, Browne’s original and most radical idea, and how it has evolved in the 25 years since its introduction into a full spectrum of fantastical—and in this case, wintry and woolen—tailoring. Behind the scenes, we were set up in the halls of the Legion of Honor documenting the looks and getting up close with the embroidery, bags, jewelry, and shoes—including a never-before-seen Thom Browne x Asics Sportstyle sneaker. Baltimore Raven DeAndre Hopkins made his way down the catwalk in a pleated skirt, continuing the tradition of Thom Browne outfitting football stars in boundary-pushing suiting. Also making their way through the Rodin Wing of the Legion of Honor was Minnesota Viking wide receiver Justin Jefferson, whose power parka was a wintery juxtaposition to the fiery backdrop that Thom Browne had set for the show, and former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Marcus Allen, who also rocked a parka over a pinstriped ensemble. Befitting the sport that inspired GQ Bowl, Browne showed off ripstop nylon blazers and wool overcoats lined with technical fabrics. The designer’s name and birth year (’65) made its way to the back of knits and Ivy-style blazers, further emphasizing the show’s connection to America’s favorite sport. The biggest surprise of the night came when Browne closed the show by having his models swap their winter-ready, ground-shaking boots for sneakers from the brand’s surprise collaboration with Asics: a designer take on the Gel-Kayano 14. Thom Browne is no stranger to sports. The American designer, who just sent his fall 2026 down the runway at our second-ever GQ Bowl, is also a lifelong athlete who’s outfitted major sports stars (LeBron and Messi come to mind) and has even staged fashion shows inspired by ice skating and surfing. The designer knows his way around classic American sportswear, the casual counterpart to the iconic shrunken suits that helped turn the brand into a sartorial standout. Since founding his namesake brand in 2001, Browne has yet to engage in a full-scale sneaker collaboration. Sure, the brand has offered its own sneakers before, but Browne has now allowed Asics into the world that he’s so carefully constructed for decades. The soon-to-be-released, Browne-ified Gel-Kayano 14 made its debut at the Bowl, a fresh switch-up from the usual oxfords and lace-up boots that typically grace the brand’s runway. The big game may be on Sunday, but GQ has been training all season for Friday night, when a panoply of heavy hitters from across sports and entertainment gathered at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum for the second annual GQ Bowl. Not so long ago, you might have been laughed at for suggesting that by 2026, pro football players would be clamoring to kit themselves out in high-fashion skirts. Sure, maybe when hell freezes over. Well, welcome to the second annual GQ Bowl, where Thom Browne staged his fall 2026 runway show with a vision of wintry fine tailoring set against a fiery backdrop at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor museum. Teyana Taylor has had a big, busy 2026 so far. Last month, she accepted her first Golden Globe Award for her performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. When Thom Browne sends his fall 2026 collection down the runway at GQ Bowl—our second annual football-meets-fashion spectacular, which hits San Francisco on Friday, February 6—it’ll mark the latest chapter in the designer’s lifelong obsession with sports. Browne grew up an athlete himself, dominating the tennis courts as a kid in small-town Pennsylvania and swimming competitively at Notre Dame. That affinity for athletics has long seeped into his work: He has staged fashion shows inspired by ice skating and surfing and hosts a starry touch football game every autumn. And, of course, he has turned countless hallmarks of classic American sportswear—from bar stripes and varsity jackets to tennis sweaters and locker loops—into key totems of his oeuvre. GQ Bowl, fashion’s most football-forward night, returns on February 6. After a rollicking inaugural kick-off of our collaborative runway with designer Emily Bode last year, we’re bringing back the camaraderie during the big-game weekend in San Francisco with the one and only Thom Browne. At the event, Browne, preeminent suiting maestro and chairman of the CFDA, will present his fall 2026 collection, featuring both menswear and womenswear, at the City by the Bay’s Legion of Honor museum. Timed to the big football weekend, it’s a fitting union for the designer in more ways than one. Having grown up tossing the pigskin around on Thanksgiving in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Browne’s connection to the sport runs deep. (“Somebody usually got hurt, somebody usually broke something, somebody got pushed over the fence,” he once recalled to GQ.)
