Grey’s Anatomy future confirmed as two show legends set to exit drama

ABC has officially renewed Grey’s Anatomy for a 23rd season. The drama, which was created by Shonda Rhimes and first hit our screens in 2005, is the longest running primetime medical drama on television. Season 22 is currently underway on ABC and Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK. While the season 23 renewal will come as welcome news to fans, it’s not all good news, as two of the show’s longtime cast members, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, were recently announced to be departing as series regulars at the end of season 22. Raver and McKidd – who play fan favourite characters Dr Teddy Altman and Dr Owen Hunt – will make their last appearance in the season finale in May.

The two characters’ storylines have been linked throughout their time on the show, as they played friends turned lovers turned co-parents. “Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” McKidd, who joined the show in 2008, said in a statement. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped …

Grey’s Anatomy legends confirmed to depart series after 18 years

Grey’s Anatomy will say goodbye to two of its longest-serving stars, as Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd are set to leave the hit medical drama in its upcoming season 22 finale. Raver and McKidd – who play fan favourites Dr Teddy Altman and Dr Owen Hunt – will bow out when the final episode airs on Wednesday 7 May on ABC in the US. The pair have been central to the show for nearly two decades, with McKidd joining in season 5 in 2008 and Raver arriving in season 6 before becoming a series regular in 2010. Their characters’ on-off relationship – which saw them meet as Army majors in Iraq before eventually marrying in season 18 – has been one of the drama’s most enduring storylines. Despite a turbulent recent chapter, which saw Teddy and Owen divorce after a failed attempt at an open marriage, there are hints the duo could still get a happy ending. Series creator Shonda Rhimes teased as much, saying it was “both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple …

Why Patrick Dempsey Returned to TV in ‘Memory of a Killer’ After ‘Grey’s’

[This interview contains spoilers from the March 16 episode of Memory of a Killer.] Patrick Dempsey has never played a character quite like with his starring role on Fox’s Memory of a Killer. More than a decade after leaving Grey’s Anatomy, the ABC medical drama where he played legendary neurosurgeon Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd for 11 seasons, Dempsey has stepped into the role of a cold-blooded contract killer who struggles to keep his double life a secret after experiencing symptoms of early onset Alzheimer’s — the same disease, ironically, that Derek spent years researching on Grey’s. “What was really appealing was the assassin side, and certainly the Alzheimer’s and the dementia side,” Dempsey tells The Hollywood Reporter of his long-awaited return to network TV. “I don’t get this type of character offered to me very often, and it came to me very quickly. I had to read it and then had to make a decision within 24 hours, because they were about to make the announcement [about the series order at the Fox Upfronts last …

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Airs Eric Dane Tribute of Dr. McSteamy Montage

Grey’s Anatomy is still reeling from the loss of one its own. Eric Dane, who famously played plastic surgeon Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on the long-running ABC medical drama, died Feb. 19, less than a year after publicly disclosing his battle with ALS. He was 53. In the first episode since Dane’s passing that aired on Thursday night, the cast and creative team behind Grey’s paid tribute to the actor with a 60-second montage. Set to Tommee Profitt and Fleurie’s cover of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” which was also used in an emotional montage for the show’s milestone 400th episode in 2022, the tribute included a collection of some of Mark Sloan’s most iconic moments and one-liners. Dane was first introduced as a guest star in the season two episode titled “Yesterday,” as the estranged best friend of neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) who had an affair with Derek’s neonatal surgeon wife, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). After becoming a series regular the following season, Dane remained a steadfast presence on the medical drama until the …
