The cast and crew of Grey’s Anatomy are paying homage to Eric Dane. Dane died Thursday afternoon after a battle with ALS. He was 53. The actor appeared in 10 seasons of the ABC medical drama, where he portrayed plastic surgeon Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy.” Dane portrayed the character in seasons two through nine, the latter of which was where Mark died. He made one more appearance on Grey’s Anatomy‘s for a cameo during the 17th season. Series creator Shonda Rhimes shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter on behalf of Shondaland, noting, “Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families. Actor Eric Dane, who rose to fame as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” died Thursday afternoon following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Tributes have flooded in for actor Eric Dane, who died on Friday aged 53. He had been diagnosed with with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. In a statement, a representative said: “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world”. Dane’s career took off when he joined long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy as the much-loved Dr Mark Sloan – better known to fans as “McSteamy”.
