A Guided Tour of Donald Trump’s Renovated Washington, DC

A Guided Tour of Donald Trump’s Renovated Washington, DC

Washington, DC, looks a little different these days. Since his return to office, President Donald Trump has pushed to physically remake the city in his image, adorning buildings with his name and banners with his face, repainting entire monuments, and even changing the White House itself. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary as a country this weekend, tourists might be surprised to find the nation’s capital undergoing immense change and, in many places, under scaffolding from ongoing construction. On the eve of the Fourth of July, take WIRED’s walking tour through the dizzying effects of Trump’s metropolitan makeover. Union Station We start our tour at Union Station, the beaux arts building that serves as the Amtrak hub and gateway to the city for visitors arriving by train. Stepping outside the grand train hall brings the first evidence of Trump’s efforts to clean up once neglected parts of the District of Columbia: the renovation of Columbus Circle. While many of Trump’s changes to the city have received heavy critique, the work on Union Station …

Dramatic photo of ibis being guided to their winter homes wins award

Gunnar Hartmann’s winning image from Nature‘s Scientist at Work photo competition 2026 Gunnar Hartmann Poaching and a changing climate forced the northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita) out of the northern foothills of the Alps around 400 years ago. But now they are on their way back. This photograph shows Helena Wehner flying in the passenger seat of an ultralight aircraft, singing a German song through a megaphone to guide the birds on their way to their new winter homes. Wehner, behind pilot Johannes Fritz, is part of an Austrian conservation group known as Waldrappteam – named after the ibis’s local name – which is trying to establish a healthy European population once more. The birds are hand-raised by human carers and form bonds, which means they are happy to follow even the people riding in the aircraft. Since its inception in 2004, the migration project has amassed numerous followers and fans from local communities along the birds’ route. The 50-day journey covers 2800 kilometres from south-east Germany to south-west Spain. The stunning shot of the …

The Guided Past-Life Regression Video That Reportedly Reveals Who You Once Were

The Guided Past-Life Regression Video That Reportedly Reveals Who You Once Were

Believing in the concept of past lives means you think that your soul has previously inhabited other lifetimes. It’s not surprising that the idea is gaining traction with how interested people are in spirituality nowadays. If you’ve ever wondered about who you were in a past life, you might be able to find out more easily than you may have expected. Social media is full of emotional posts and videos from people who claim to have followed a past life regression video and received the answers they were seeking about who they were before. Past-life regression is a form of hypnotherapy that helps guide people back in time through their past lives. Some therapists believe that the problems you are currently facing are a result of what happened to you in the past, and that they can be resolved by tapping into those previous experiences. It’s all done by accessing memories and events that are usually hidden in the subconscious. Past-life regression helps you learn about your past life, including why you feel connected to …

Archaeologists Discover Ancient Egyptian Mummy Buried with Pages from Homer’s Iliad: When Literature Guided Souls Through the Afterlife

Archaeologists Discover Ancient Egyptian Mummy Buried with Pages from Homer’s Iliad: When Literature Guided Souls Through the Afterlife

Renaissance Europe admired ancient Rome, ancient Rome admired ancient Greece, and ancient Greece admired ancient Egypt. But the admiration could actually go both ways in that last case, since the two civilizations’ periods of existence overlapped. The Greeks made no secret of their regard for Egypt as a far deeper well of knowledge and wisdom (indeed, much of what we know about ancient Egypt today comes from Greek records), but archaeological evidence shows that the Egyptians, in turn, were hardly dismissive of Greek accomplishment. Many Hellenic texts have been discovered in Egyptian burial sites, but only recently has a Greek literary work turned up packaged with a mummy — and not just any literary work, but pages from Homer’s Iliad. Unearthed from a 1,600-year-old Roman-era tomb in the Egyptian town of Al Bahnasa, the fragment contains lines from Book 2’s epic “catalogue of ships,” which lists all the vessels the Achaean army sends off to Troy. It dates from an era in ancient Egypt, centuries after the reign of the Greek-descended Cleopatra, when “Greek literary …

‘Just war’ has guided Catholic thinking on conflict for centuries – including criticism of Iran war

‘Just war’ has guided Catholic thinking on conflict for centuries – including criticism of Iran war

(The Conversation) — Since the beginning of the Iran war, Pope Leo XIV has frequently called for peace, cautioning that the “delusion of omnipotence” makes military force seem preferable to diplomacy. Although U.S. Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic, criticized some of the pope’s comments, a growing choir of Catholic voices has criticized the conflict by invoking the concept of “just war” – an evolving tradition that has guided Christian thinking about war and peace for 1,500 years. In March, the archbishop of Washington said the war failed “to meet the just war threshold.” A month later, the prelate leading the U.S. military’s Catholic chaplaincy delivered a stark assessment: The war was not justified. The Vatican’s secretary of state raised similar concerns. Many faiths have teachings about when war is or is not considered justified, including Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. In the Christian just war tradition, battle is never holy – “God does not bless any conflict,” in Leo’s words – but it is sometimes considered necessary. That tradition traces its roots to the fifth-century …

Smoke a joint and get deep with flowers at this guided floral design workshop in DTLA

Abriana Vicioso is the host of the Flower Hour, which takes place monthly. (Jennifer McCord / For The Times) Each flower carries a personal history. For Abriana Vicioso, the calla lily was her parents’ wedding flower — a symbol of her mother’s beauty. “She had this big, beautiful white calla lily in her hair,” Vicioso says. “I love my parents. They’re the reason I’m here. I’ll never forget where I came from.” The Flower Hour begins with Vicioso announcing, with a warm smile: “Today is about touching grass.” The florist-by-trade gestures behind her to hundreds of flowers contained in buckets — blue thistles, ivory anemones and calla lilies painted silver — all twisted and unfurling into the air. “Tonight is going to be so sweet and intimate,” Vicioso says, eyeing the beautiful chaos at her feet. A grin buds across her face. Moments before the workshop, participants sit at candlelit tables exchanging horoscopes and comparing their favorite flowers. A mention of the illustrious bird-of-paradise flower elicits coos and awe from the women. Izamar Vazquez, who …
