Hantavirus-hit cruise ship docks in Rotterdam at voyage end

HOSPITALISATIONS After arriving in the Canary Islands on May 10, more than 120 passengers and crew were evacuated from the ship, either to their home countries or to the Netherlands, which has a special responsibility as the ship is Dutch-flagged. A 65-year-old French woman became symptomatic on the repatriation flight and ended up in critical condition in a Paris hospital with a confirmed case of hantavirus. Two people, one Dutch and one British, were also urgently evacuated from the ship to the Netherlands and rushed to hospital. Both are in stable condition and the Briton is well enough to return home for self-isolation, according to Dutch officials. All others evacuated to the Netherlands from the ship have tested negative for the virus. Some are in quarantine in the Netherlands, others have already flown home. Everyone still on board is asymptomatic, according to Oceanwide Expeditions, and being closely monitored by two medics on board. Late Sunday, the WHO said it was maintaining its assessment of the hantavirus outbreak as “low risk”. “While additional cases may still …

Hantavirus-hit cruise ship MV Hondius arrives in Rotterdam for disinfection

The hantavirus-hit cruise ship MV Hondius reached Rotterdam on Monday morning for disinfection, with Dutch authorities preparing quarantine arrangements for the 25 crew members and two medical staff remaining on board. Local authorities said quarantine facilities had been set up for some of the non-Dutch crew, though it was not clear yet if they would stay there for the full recommended 42-day quarantine period. The Dutch-flagged luxury cruise ship had been carrying around 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries when a cluster of severe respiratory illnesses among passengers was first reported to the World Health Organization on May 2. Three people – a Dutch couple and a German national – have died since the start of the outbreak. To display this content from YouTube, you must enable advertisement tracking and audience measurement. Demand for Cruises Appears Undimmed Despite Hantavirus and Other Onboard Outbreaks

Demand for Cruises Appears Undimmed Despite Hantavirus and Other Onboard Outbreaks

Recent outbreaks of hantavirus and norovirus on cruise ships are making headlines, but they’re unlikely to dim the growing popularity of vacation cruises, according to industry representatives and travel experts. In fact, many within the industry still expect a record number of people worldwide to take cruises this year despite three passengers aboard the MV Hondius dying from hantavirus after the ship stopped in Argentina and a recent norovirus outbreak aboard a British ship docked in Bordeaux, France. “The cruise consumer seems to be somewhat Teflon when it comes to stories like this,” said Rob Kwortnik, an associate professor at Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration who closely watches the cruise industry. In mid-April, an annual forecast by the Cruise Lines International Association, an industry trade group, estimated that 38.3 million people would travel on ocean-going ships this year, 4% more from a record 37.2 million passengers last year. Industrywide sales figures are closely held. Asked about potential impacts from what happened aboard the MV Hondius, the trade association said it doesn’t comment or …

A third person who was isolating in secure lodging was also taken to the hospital for assessment and testing “out of an abundance of caution,” the agency said. Officials did not clarify that person’s connection to the couple or whether they were a passenger on the Hondius. The agency said it is following prevention and control protocols, and that samples have been sent to its National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for “confirmatory testing,” with results expected in two days. “The overall risk to the general population in Canada from the Andes hantavirus outbreak …
