HBO Robin Byrd Documentary Is Titled ‘Bang My Box’ — Watch the Trailer

HBO‘s newest original documentary ought to get your attention by its title alone. On Tuesday, HBO revealed the release date and trailer for Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story. Bang My Box, produced by Sarah Jessica Parker and chronicling the life of iconic New York City public access call-in show host Robin Byrd, will debut on HBO and HBO Max on Tuesday, June 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The 80-minute film is directed and produced by Jyllian Gunther and Stephanie Schwam. Byrd’s show was heavy on adult entertainment; the title of her doc is the same as the musical number she performed to end each episode. “Before the internet and the ubiquity of social media influencers, there was Robin Byrd — the spirited, anything-goes New York City public access host, clad only in her signature black crochet bikini,” the synopsis begins. “From 1977 to 1998, Robin created, produced and hosted the late-night call-in show that incorporated performances and interviews with adult entertainers and experimental artists. Each show ended with a bawdy song and dance, …

Mike Myers Thanks Canada For Hollywood Career

Mike Myers Thanks Canada For Hollywood Career

A tearful Canadian comedian and Hollywood star Mike Myers on Sunday night paid tribute to his native Canada for opening the way to his classic roles like Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Shrek. “I just want to say, Canada, I don’t know what to say, dude. I’d just really be nothing without you,” an emotional Myers, who last year led Canada’s “elbows up” moment after U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to annex Canada, said when accepting the Icon Award at the Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto. “I had a whole speech written about how much I love Canada, but I suspect some of you might be sick of hearing that at this point,” Myers added, before getting emotional when thanking his parents “for moving to Canada and stressing the importance of being silly.” Also Sunday night, Heated Rivalry, the gay hockey soap opera dominated the TV series competition. The popular Crave and HBO Max drama took home trophies for best drama series, best lead TV drama performer for Hudson Williams, the audience award …

In the ‘Hacks’ Series Finale, Deborah Gave Ava “the Ultimate Declaration of Love”

In the ‘Hacks’ Series Finale, Deborah Gave Ava “the Ultimate Declaration of Love”

Statsky: Yes, everything that is said in that episode about their history is true, and you’ve seen it all happen in the course of the show. That’s why, I think, that episode was so fun for us to write. You’re seeing all the things you’ve watched over five seasons come to fruition. It’s like, Oh yeah, they are intimately involved. Aniello: Not to mention that they look great together. They would’ve had beautiful (and funny) babies. Aniello: Well, they’re not dead yet! You’re saying there’s the possibility of a Hacks reboot someday? Aniello: Cold open: Deborah and Ava are in Provincetown during Dyke Week, having a blast. Statsky: The camera pans down to Ava’s pregnant belly… This season delved into one of Deborah’s emotional wounds: the way her ex-husband took her idea and made himself the sole creator of her sitcom, Who’s Making Dinner? And in fact there were hardly any shows created solely by women in the 1970s. Then you have Ava getting to remake it today, working, as you are, in the aftermath …

Highest Quality Streaming Service Found by Analyst

As the streaming business has moved from a focus on subscriber growth to management teams touting the importance of profitability, the sector has also seen the rise of mentions of such quality-related measures as subscriber retention and “engagement.” “Engagement is critical to reducing churn, [which] might be the most significant opportunity we have,” new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro said on a recent earnings conference call. But not all “engagement” is created equal, which explains why its meaning has also started to get questioned and, in response, fine-tuned. Should engagement simply be another word for viewing time, for example? Some industry executives have started arguing that the answer to that question is no. “All hours of engagement are not the same, and we really care about the quality of that engagement,” Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said during an earnings conference call earlier this year. But how to best compare different engagement metrics and rhetoric touted by different players? Now, one prominent Wall Street expert has crowned the king of streaming quality and unveiled his new MoffettNathanson …

Penelope Douglas’ Romance Novel ‘Five Brothers’ Getting TV Treatment

Penelope Douglas’ adult romance novel has been optioned by Canada’s Crave streaming service for a TV series after the breakout success of its Heated Rivalry gay romancer adaptation. Released in 2024, Five Brothers follows one woman who learns the secrets of the five Jaeger brothers: Macon, Army, Iron, Dallas, and Trace. “Five Brothers was such an immersive writing experience for me with a cast of characters I connected to immediately. I can’t wait to see these men brought to life,” Douglas said in a statement. Crave parent Bell Media plans to develop the book as a multi-season TV series after successfully adapting Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry book into a gay hockey TV drama that was also sold to HBO Max in the U.S. market. “Heated Rivalry proved there is global appetite for sexy, sophisticated, and mainstream romance stories. With complex lead characters, a boundary-pushing story, and a built-in audience, we’re excited to develop Crave’s next big swing in the romance genre,” Carlyn Klebuc, general manager, original programming at Bell Media, said in a statement. Heated Rivalry is set …

Lisa Kudrow on ‘The Comeback’ Finale, Saying Bye to Valerie Cherish

Lisa Kudrow on ‘The Comeback’ Finale, Saying Bye to Valerie Cherish

[This story contains major spoilers from the season 3 and series finale of The Comeback.] That’s a wrap on Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish — forever. The Comeback aired episode 8 of the HBO Max’s third and final season Sunday night as Cherish bowed out at the end of an eventful episode that welcomed surprise guest stars Bradley Whitford, Adam Scott and Justin Theroux and saw Cherish tangle with NuNet boss, played by Andrew Scott, over the future of her career and the fate of her show How’s That?! It was an eventful and historic run, too, as The Comeback is the only show in TV history to have three seasons each separated by a decade. “The most respectful thing we can do for the audience and for the character is make it a three-part story. It’s a trilogy, and this is the end,” Kudrow told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year when she sat for a cover story ahead of the return. That ending was an emotional one, too, as Kudrow said goodbye to …

HBO Max Is ‘Probably’ Our ‘Most Important Asset’

HBO Max Is ‘Probably’ Our ‘Most Important Asset’

David Zaslav really loves HBO Max. (You can go ahead and just forget about that whole “Max” era.) On Wednesday, Zaslav called HBO Max “probably” Warner Bros. Discovery‘s “most important asset.” It is streaming’s unique ability to house entire TV and film libraries that, in his mind, places it above linear assets like HBO, CNN and the Turner Channels. The same goes for WBD’s theatrical distribution business, which also ultimately serves as a feeder system for HBO Max. So I guess that’s what David Ellison is (mostly) paying $111 billion for. One could very reasonably argue that Warner Bros. studios are actually a bit more valuable — the company’s motion picture business is certainly its most iconic asset. (The studio lot is pretty cool too.) But it is actually WBD’s linear networks business that still technically brings in the most money, and then studios, and then streaming. But the times, they are a-changing, and this cable cowboy — the protégé of the actual cable cowboy John Malone, recognizes it. Zaslav also said on Warner Bros. …

Big Bang Theory Spinoff First Look

The world is falling apart in the first look at The Big Bang Theory spinoff series Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Castmembers Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie took the stage at CCXP Mexico City to share tease their comedy that is set to begin streaming on HBO Max in July. Along with debuting images that can be seen above and below, the panel revealed that musician Danny Elfman will create an original theme song for the series. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe centers on Sussman as comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, who was introduced on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory when his pals Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) would visit the shop. The new program features Stuart doing his best to restore reality after he breaks a device that Sheldon and Leonard had built, which inadvertently causes a multiverse armageddon. Posehn told fans from the stage about the title character, “The fun is watching him fail every week.” Sussman added that viewers will …
