Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a strange beast from the beginning. Perhaps not comic-book weird in the usual sense – no cosmic portals or rubber nipples here – but strange all the same. This was a Gotham where Bruce Wayne seemed to have been styled by the ghost of Kurt Cobain, the Riddler appeared to have escaped from a David Fincher evidence locker, and the whole city looked as if it had been left to soak overnight in rainwater and civic corruption. The expectation was that Reeves would begin rolling back the bizarre in part two, perhaps leaving us with a more orthodox Batverse populated with mobsters and corrupt lawyers. Yet the tools and trinkets found in the cave remained remarkably consistent, hinting that these ancient hominin species had a shared material culture. Situated on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Üçağızlı II cave is a 56-square-metre space, about the size of a city studio apartment. Naoki Morimoto at Kyoto University, Japan, and his colleagues carried out the first full archaeological dig at the site in 2020. Teeth and jaw remains revealed that Neanderthals inhabited the cave from 77,000 to 59,000 years ago and our species, Homo sapiens, from 59,000 to 47,000 years ago. Altogether, nearly 20,000 stone artefacts were also recovered from the cave. But, surprisingly, the stone-tool technology used by the two human species and the objects they collected remained extraordinarily consistent throughout the entire period. All eyes are on the SpaceX IPO — the world’s largest in history — and its CEO Elon Musk. But lest you forget, there is another publicly traded company in the Musk universe that many believe will someday merge with SpaceX. We’re talking about Tesla, which has a current market cap of about $1.52 trillion. Musk, who also leads Tesla, has pitched it as an AI and robotics company, even though the bulk of its revenue still comes from selling EVs. Some see a merger with SpaceX as a critical step to achieving that vision. SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell seems open to the idea. During an interview with CNBC, Shotwell said a merger “might make Elon’s life a little easier.” There is evidence that SpaceX is already preparing for one. While proteins have been recovered from H. erectus fossils before, this is the first time they have revealed meaningful information about the species. The proteins suggest that H. erectus interbred with another group of hominins in Asia, the Denisovans. H. erectus was one of the most long-lived and widespread hominin species. They appear in the fossil record 2 million years ago in Africa and reached Eurasia by 1.8 million years ago – as shown by fossils from Dmanisi, Georgia. Some of them went all the way to Java in what is now Indonesia, where they survived until as recently as 108,000 years ago. Recent findings from research we have been carrying out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Cern in Geneva suggest that we might be closing in on signs of undiscovered physics. If confirmed, these hints would overturn the theory, called the Standard Model, that has dominated particle physics for 50 years. The findings suggest the way that specific sub-atomic particles behave in the LHC disagrees with the Standard Model. Fundamental particles are the most basic building blocks of matter – sub-atomic particles that cannot be divided into smaller units. The four fundamental forces – gravity, electromagnetism, the weak force and the strong force – govern how these particles interact. The LHC is a giant particle accelerator built in a 27km-long circular tunnel under the French-Swiss border. Its main purpose is to find cracks in the Standard Model. This theory is our best understanding of fundamental particles and forces, but we know it cannot be the whole story. It does not explain gravity or dark matter – the invisible, so far unmeasured type of matter that …
