Russian secret services target Latvia as Ukraine’s drone offensive worries the Kremlin

Moscow launched a fierce attack on Latvia at the UN on Monday. Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to the Security Council, accused Riga, without providing any evidence, of allowing Ukraine to use its territory to prepare drone strikes against Russia. The Russian diplomat then threatened the Baltic state with military retaliation, claiming that NATO would not come to its aid, even though Latvia has been a member of the organisation since 2004. Highly aggressive Russian spies Before Nebenzia’s outburst at the UN, the SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service, had levelled similar accusations against Latvia the day before. Russian spies even named five Latvian military bases where Ukrainian soldiers are reportedly already stationed to prepare their attacks against Russia. “The abject Russophobia of Latvia’s current rulers proved stronger than their critical thinking and sense of self-preservation,” the SVR said. “Russia is lying again! This time it is the SVR or the External Intelligence Service running a disinformation campaign against Latvia,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said on X. ‘Disposable spies’: Poland records unprecedented number of Russian espionage cases

Last year and the year before saw a rise in espionage activity in Poland, “primarily on the part of Russian and closely allied Belarusian special services as well as China”, the Internal Security Agency (ABW) said in a report published on May 6.  As a result, Poland conducted as many counter-intelligence investigations in 2024 and 2025 as it had in the previous three decades.   European law enforcement and intelligence officials began noticing these efforts back in 2022, The New Yorker reported in February. Job offers began appearing in online chat groups, usually on Telegram, directed at Russian-speaking populations – Russians, but also Belarusians and Ukrainians. Polish intelligence services came up with a name for these isolated agents recruited by Russian intelligence – jednorazowi agenci – or “single-use agents”. The ABW report said Russian intelligence services were gradually shifting from single-use agents to more “professional” networks to carry out sabotage and other campaigns across Europe. “’Disposable spies’ are very useful for generating chaos, radicalising public opinion, strengthening intergroup antagonisms, distracting attention and testing the resilience of …

Russia’s hybrid-warfare attacks in Europe dropped this year, but could they pick up in 2026?

Russia’s hybrid-warfare attacks in Europe dropped this year, but could they pick up in 2026?

Key takeaways Incidents of hybrid warfare in Europe – excluding drone incursions – dropped in 2025 after hitting a high in 2024. There are a few possible explanations: European intelligence agencies may be better at blocking attacks, the Kremlin may be looking to achieve its objectives in Ukraine via negotiations with the US, or Russia could have decided to re-evaluate its hybrid-warfare strategy. Incidents of hybrid warfare risk increasing in 2026 with large-scale attacks and influence operations as elections approach in several European nations including France. Human rights activist Vladimir Ossetchkine was preparing dinner with his wife and children at their home in Biarritz when he noticed a small red dot travelling across the room. Then it zeroed in on him. Ossetchkine immediately threw himself to the ground, as did his family – all of whom managed to survive the September 12 assassination attempt. One month later, four French residents were charged with trying to kill Ossetchkine, who is the director of an NGO that advocates for human rights in Russian prisons and who has lived in France since fleeing Russia 10 years ago.  ‘Irregular, covert operations’ Were the Biarritz snipers working on the Kremlin’s orders? Some of those arrested were originally …
