UK weather maps turn icy white for -3C chill as 24 areas to be blanketed | Weather | News

UK weather maps have turned icy white as Britain is said to be blanketed in snow in just days.. Data from WXCharts.com indicates a bitter cold blast sweeping across the north of the UK on Friday, April 24. Maps show temperatures could drop as low as -3C in northern England – and a chilly 1-C in the south. That weekend, up to 5cm of snow could fall in Scotland and even in some areas of northern England. By Sunday, April 26, though, the snow is unlikely to stick around. The forecast shows a particular wet period on the way, with heavy showers covering most of the UK. The Met Office weather forecast covering the period from April 18 to April 27 states: “A few showers around at the start of the period, mainly affecting the northwest where it will also be windy for a time. “For many though the weekend should be fine and dry with spells of warm sunshine, but still some chilly nights. Into the following week fronts associated with another Atlantic low …

Early Mars was warm and wet not icy, suggests latest research

A recent study showed that Mars was warm and wet billions of years ago. The finding contrasts with another theory that this era was mainly cold and icy. The result has implications for the idea that life could have developed on the planet at this time. Whether Mars was once habitable is a fascinating and intensely researched topic of interest over many decades. Mars, like the Earth, is about 4.5 billion years old and its geological history is divided into different epochs of time. The latest paper relates to Mars during a time called the Noachian epoch, which extended from about 4.1 to 3.7 billion years ago. This was during a stage in solar system history called the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB). Evidence for truly cataclysmic meteorite impacts during the LHB are found on many bodies throughout the solar system. Two obvious scars from this era on Mars are the enormous Hellas and Argyre impact basins; both are well over a thousand miles across and each possesses enough volume to hold all the water in …

Sebastião Salgado’s stunning shots of the world’s icy regions

Sebastião Salgado’s stunning shots of the world’s icy regions

Sebastião Salgado’s photo of the South Sandwich Islands, taken in 2009 Sebastião Salgado Sebastião Salgado became famous for his portraits of humans struggling to survive in an unjust and violent world. He took astonishing photographs of the attempted assassination of US President Ronald Reagan, covered conflicts in Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East, and documented the lives of labourers and migrants in years-long, globe-spanning projects. But after photographing the Rwandan genocide, Salgado became depressed, retreating to his family farm in Brazil. Dismayed by the environmental destruction he found, he began restoring the Atlantic rainforest there, which eventually inspired him to return to photography. The Genesis project followed, to capture “what was pristine and hadn’t been destroyed” on the planet, as Selgado said in a 2024 interview, from the mountains of Alaska to the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon. These travels turned him into an environmentalist, Salgado said in another interview. Glaciers, published this month following Salgado’s death last year, collects 65 of the black-and-white shots of glaciers and other ice the photographer took for …

Nomad Launches Hybrid Titanium Apple Watch Band in New ‘Icy Blue Glow’ Color

Nomad today introduced a new version of its popular titanium Stratos band that’s designed for the Apple Watch. The new version features a limited edition icy blue glow colorway, providing a subtle glow-in-the-dark effect that can be seen between the titanium links of the band. Available for $189, the Stratos Apple Watch band combines the look of titanium with the comfort of fluoroelastomer. The band features outer links made from metal injection molded Grade 4 titanium, paired with molded FKM material on the interior. The fluoroelastomer connects each titanium link, offering flexibility and comfort that’s unavailable with traditional metal bands, including Apple’s own titanium band. The FKM material peeks through the rounded titanium links, adding visual interest and space for ventilation to bolster moisture evaporation and breathability. Nomad makes the Stratos band in Silver and Black titanium, with black, ultra orange, volt, and icy blue glow FKM color options. The latter is the new color, and we were able to try out the band before it launched. Nomad’s imagery largely depicts the band in the …

NASA’s Juno spacecraft offers fresh insight into Europa’s icy ocean and its potential to support life

NASA’s Juno spacecraft offers fresh insight into Europa’s icy ocean and its potential to support life

You have likely heard Europa described as one of the most promising places to search for life beyond Earth. The icy moon of Jupiter holds a global ocean beneath its frozen surface, along with the basic chemical ingredients linked to biology. Now, a new analysis using data from NASA’s Juno spacecraft offers the clearest limits yet on how thick that ice shell may be, a detail that shapes how scientists think about Europa’s habitability. The research, published in Nature Astronomy, was led by S. M. Levin and colleagues from JPL, Caltech, Stanford, Purdue and other prestigious universities. Findings draw on observations collected during Juno’s close flybys of Europa. Although Juno was designed to study Jupiter’s atmosphere and interior, the team found a way to repurpose one of its instruments to probe Europa’s ice. Their work suggests the moon’s ice shell is far thicker than some earlier estimates, likely measuring between 19 and 39 kilometers. This finding narrows a long-running debate and adds new context to the question of whether Europa’s buried ocean could support life. …
