Hollywood Production Canada Rebounded 2025 From Dual Strikes Impact

U.S. film and TV production in Canada rebounded in 2025 as the local industry finally put the devastating impact of Hollywood’s year of strikes in 2023 in the rearview mirror. The latest annual economic report from the Canadian Media Producers Association, representing local indie producers, points to foreign location and service production in Canada, mostly by American producers, rising 9.5 percent to CAN$5.32 billion (US$3.9 billion, compared to a year-earlier CAN$4.86 billion. That production activity includes visual effects work done by Canadian VFX studios for foreign films and TV series. Hollywood production growth was due mainly to TV series production rising 12.1 percent to CAN$3.42 billion (US$2.51 million) and the total volume of other foreign production – including TV movies, specials, pilots and single-episode shoots — increasing by 54.4 percent to CAN$366 million (US$268.2 million). The overall increase in Hollywood TV production last year offset a 2.2 percent fall in foreign movie production across Canada. The major American players active north of the U.S. border continues to be led by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ …

How Islamophobic rhetoric leaves an impact on the mental health of Muslim Americans

How Islamophobic rhetoric leaves an impact on the mental health of Muslim Americans

(The Conversation) — The war with Iran has led to a surge in anti-Muslim rhetoric – spilling into political discourse. U.S. Rep. Randy Fine of Florida posted on X that “the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one,” and added in another post, “We need more Islamophobia, not less.” Similarly, U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas called for stopping the entry of “Muslims immigrating to America.” A study by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found that the average number of Islamophobic posts jumped from 2,000 to 6,000 each day on X alone in the first six days of the conflict. I have studied the impact of Islamophobia on mental health over the past two decades, following soaring hate crimes in the wake of 9/11. Research consistently shows that negative portrayals of Muslims shape public attitudes toward Muslims and can lead to increased discrimination, hate crimes and psychological consequences. Increase in Islamophobia Islamophobia in the United States tends to surge during global conflicts, political campaigns and terrorist attacks. Human Rights …

New study reveals how political bias conditions the impact of conspiracy thinking

New study reveals how political bias conditions the impact of conspiracy thinking

A recent study published in Political Psychology suggests that a person’s general tendency to believe in conspiracies strongly predicts their endorsement of specific political rumors, but mostly when those rumors attack their political rivals. The research provides evidence that psychological traits and political loyalties work together to shape what people are willing to believe. These findings help explain how political divisions feed into the spread of misinformation. Previous work has identified two separate predictors of these beliefs. First, people have varying levels of “conspiracy thinking,” which is a general psychological tendency to assume that secret, sinister forces control world events. Second, people tend to favor their own political groups. They usually accept theories that blame their political rivals and reject theories that accuse their own side. The researchers designed this study to see if these two separate factors actually interact with one another. The scientists suspected that general conspiracy thinking might have a stronger effect when a rumor aligns with a person’s political bias. People naturally want to protect the reputation of their own group …

More companies go bust in March as fears mount over Iran war impact

Tom Russell, president of restructuring professionals trade group R3, said: “While it may be too early to see the full impact of the worsening economic situation in the formal insolvency statistics, energy and fuel costs have risen significantly, and for many businesses this has come at the same time as customers are becoming more cautious with their spending. What secret report reveals about impact of UK nuclear programme on veterans who claimed they were harmed by the fallout

“The Ministry of Defence has always maintained that it never rained,” said Ken McGinley, founder of the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association (BNTVA). “I’m sorry, you’re liars … I was there!” McGinley, who was a royal engineer, gave this interview in January 2024, shortly before his death, as part of our Oral History of British Nuclear Test Veterans project. McGinley was present during the Grapple nuclear weapons test series, conducted by the UK on the central Pacific island of Kiritimati (also known as Christmas Island) in the late 1950s. At the time, this remote atoll was inhabited by 250 villagers as well as thousands of British servicemen. For decades, many of those present during this and other above-ground British nuclear weapons tests have argued they were harmed by radioactive fallout. McGinley founded the BNTVA in 1983 to “gain recognition and restitution” for the veterans who took part in British and American nuclear tests and clean-ups between 1952 and 1965. British royal engineers build a runway during construction of the British military base on Kiritimati, November …

How a US Blockade Near the Strait of Hormuz Could Work and the Impact Ahead for the Global Economy

How a US Blockade Near the Strait of Hormuz Could Work and the Impact Ahead for the Global Economy

A blockade of Iranian ports that President Donald Trump said began Monday could further disrupt oil prices, has spurred questions about international law and leaves doubts about whether the pressure tactic will force Tehran to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. Trump threatened to impose the blockade after talks to further a fragile ceasefire ended without a deal this past weekend. Iran had previously halted nearly all tanker traffic through the key waterway, allowing only some ships perceived as friendly to pass while charging considerable fees. Enforcing the blockade is likely to demand significant resources from the U.S. Navy and could prompt concerns about military force and international law, experts say. Supply chain analysts, meanwhile, stress that the restrictions could undermine the flow of oil, fertilizer, food and other goods to consumers already facing higher prices. How the US could enforce a blockade of Iranian ports Successfully enforcing the blockade will require a sustained commitment of U.S. Navy ships and personnel, as well as clear guidance from the Trump administration and the Navy’s legal department, …

Doctor Who icon Christopher Eccleston has recalled the TV moment which had an impact that he couldn’t have imagined

Doctor Who icon Christopher Eccleston has recalled the TV moment which had an impact that he couldn’t have imagined

Doctor Who icon Christopher Eccleston has recalled how an iconic moment from ITV crime drama Cracker came about. The 1990s drama, which was created and written by Jimmy McGovern and followed a team working for Greater Manchester Police as they tried to solve crimes, starred Eccleston as DCI David Bilborough. Bilborough was eventually murdered by Albie Kinsella (Robert Carlyle), leading to a landmark moment in British TV as the character bled out while giving a “statement of a dying man” over his radio. Speaking to Radio Times magazine about his new Netflix drama Unchosen, the actor was asked about his departure from Cracker. He explained: “They wanted me to sign for three series but I said I’d sign for one, see how it went. When it went well, I said I’d go back, but I wasn’t going to hang around and support Robbie Coltrane, bless him, for three series.” He continued: “That handed Jimmy [McGovern, who wrote it] a provocation. Nowadays, major characters are killed off constantly, but it had never been done before he …

The Impact of Social Expectations on Men’s Depression

The Impact of Social Expectations on Men’s Depression

In therapy, I’ve found that my male clients don’t often start with the word depression. Instead, some may talk about feeling diminished, unmotivated, or stuck. They may feel lost, disconnected from themselves, cut off from joy or pleasure. Even if they are functioning well in the world, they may feel isolated, irritated, filled with self-doubt or shame as they face their own limitations, have a hard time navigating relationships, or try to find a way to “figure things out.” Some men describe a life that has become strained, empty, or directionless. Difficulties in men’s mental health are often expressed as a loss of self-regard, loneliness, or vitality. All these experiences can be expressions of depression in men, which are both shaped and impacted by social expectations. Depression is itself indicative of other challenges, conflicts, or feelings experienced deep inside. It is not an isolated “symptom” that can be fully addressed by a targeted intervention, without understanding it in the context of the individual’s history, socialization, and personality. During in-depth therapy, some men may recognize their …

Karol G Wants Coachella Performance to Have Meaningful Impact Amid ICE

Karol G, who is set to become the first Latina artist to headline Coachella this weekend, said she wants to make a notable impact, especially for the Latin community, with her performance. The Colombian superstar told Playboy in a recent interview that she wanted the right opportunity to stand up for her community. Especially since the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Donald Trump has been widely criticized for its aggressive tactics towards the Hispanic community specifically. “People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t,’” Karol G said of speaking out against ICE. “Why? Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away.’ You become bait, because some people want to show their power.” Rather than saying the popular anti-ICE phrase “ICE Out” that many other celebrities, such as Bad Bunny, have also said in the past, the “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” singer admitted she wants to make a statement that will be even more meaningful. “I have a huge stage, and …
