Lebanon condemns Israel’s ‘clear intention’ to impose new occupation of its territory

Lebanon denounced what it called Israel’s plans for “a new occupation of Lebanese territory” on Tuesday, after Israel said it would establish a “security zone” in the country. Defence Minister Major General Michel Menassa said the remarks by his counterpart Israel Katz were “no longer mere threats”, but reflected “a clear intention to impose a new occupation of Lebanese territory, forcibly displace hundreds of thousands of citizens, and systematically destroy villages and towns in the south”. Katz also said Israel would have “security control” up to the Litani river, an idea which Menassa denounced as “a deepening of the aggression against Lebanese land and national sovereignty”. Tehran-backed Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the war by launching attacks on Israel to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel has responded with broad strikes across Lebanon and a ground offensive. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced Israel’s deployment of troops against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as an “illegal invasion” that violates its “integrity and sovereignty”. Fresh Israeli strikes hit the country’s south and near Beirut on Tuesday, the state-run National News …

Labour draws up equality law revamp that ‘will impose socialism’ on Britain

Labour is planning an overhaul of equality laws that will “impose socialism” on Britain, the Tories have claimed. Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is drawing up new statutory guidance that critics say amounts to a “war on the middle class”. Under the plans, public sector bodies will have a new “socio-economic duty” imposed on them, meaning that all decisions they make must strive to reduce inequality in society. The policy would lead to benefits claimants and deprived families being prioritised for taxpayer-funded services, with the middle classes pushed to the back of the queue, according to the Conservatives. In practice, they warn that this could lead to middle-class families being discriminated against when it comes to school places, police resources and hospital and GP appointments. Labour has been accused of launching a series of measures which have penalised the middle classes, including imposing VAT on private school fees and changing inheritance taxes for farmers and family-owned businesses. Inheritance tax changes for farmers is one of the measures that has seen Labour accused of penalising the middle …

Can Trump still impose tariffs after the Supreme Court ruling? | Donald Trump News

The United States Supreme Court has ruled that President Donald Trump’s global tariffs are illegal. In a 6–3 decision written by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the court agreed that Trump exceeded his authority by invoking a 1977 law to impose the tariffs. Recommended Stories list of 2 itemsend of list The case is the first major challenge to Trump’s policy agenda before a court he reshaped by appointing three conservative justices during his first term. Trump called the ruling “a disgrace”. The court remanded the case to the US Court of International Trade (CIT) to oversee a refund process. Here is what we know: What has the Supreme Court decided? The court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not give the president the power to unilaterally impose sweeping tariffs. “Our task today is to decide only whether the power to ‘regulate … importation,’ as granted to the president in IEEPA, embraces the power to impose tariffs. It does not,” Roberts wrote in the ruling. In its decision, the justices said …

Trump threatens to impose 100% tariff if Canada makes deal with China

Mandel Ngan | Afp | Getty Images President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Canada that the U.S. would impose 100% tariff on goods sold in the U.S. if the country strikes a trade deal with China. “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post. Trump also suggested Saturday that China would try to use Canada to try to avoid paying U.S. tariffs. “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump stated. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada and China reached a preliminary deal to remove trade barriers and lower tariffs. Under the tentative agreement, Beijing cut tariffs on some Canadian agricultural products, while Ottawa increased …

NSS criticises councillor for trying to impose prayer on meeting

NSS criticises councillor for trying to impose prayer on meeting

The National Secular Society has criticised a councillor for attempting to impose a prayer on a meeting and implying those who do not pray are “heathens”. Raising a “point of order” at the beginning of a meeting of Worcestershire County Council on Thursday, Conservative councillor Tony Miller (pictured, right) said the council has “always started” with a prayer. It is understood a chaplain was not present in the meeting to say the prayer. Cllr Miller said starting the meeting without a prayer is “disrespectful to this council and disrespectful to this country”. Christians are a minority in England, making up 46% of the population. Cllr Miller continued: “We are not heathens. I hope we’re not anyway”. He then invited “those who agree” to stand while he asked God to “bless this meeting” in the “name of our Lord Jesus Christ”. Assistant Director for Legal and Governance Hazel Best tried to interrupt him as his statement was not related to a point of order. But Cllr Miller said: “It’s related to the stand the way this …
