Is increasing VRAM finally worth it? I ran the numbers on my Windows 11 PC

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Rising RAM prices have made upgrading your PC more expensive. Virtual RAM is a less expensive way of boosting an older computer’s performance. Virtual RAM has limited use cases because it can’t match the speed of physical RAM. It’s been a rough seven months or so for shoppers. Prices for RAM and PCs have surged to record levels, fueled in part by the rise of generative AI and broader economic turmoil. Because of the price shifts, upgrading your old computer — or buying a new system — is now more expensive than ever. There is some good news. RAM prices have recently started to drop, but only slightly; memory and hardware remain very expensive. Also: The best all-in-one computers of 2026: Expert tested and reviewed Affordability remains a major problem, though there is a solution, albeit a limited one: virtual RAM. Also known as virtual memory, this resource management feature allows PC owners to use a portion of their device’s storage drive as …

Number of AI chatbots ignoring human instructions increasing, study says | AI (artificial intelligence)

AI models that lie and cheat appear to be growing in number with reports of deceptive scheming surging in the last six months, a study into the technology has found. AI chatbots and agents disregarded direct instructions, evaded safeguards and deceived humans and other AI, according to research funded by the UK government-funded AI Security Institute (AISI). The study, shared with the Guardian, identified nearly 700 real-world cases of AI scheming and charted a five-fold rise in misbehaviour between October and March, with some AI models destroying emails and other files without permission. The snapshot of scheming by AI agents “in the wild”, as opposed to in laboratory conditions, has sparked fresh calls for international monitoring of the increasingly capable models and come as Silicon Valley companies aggressively promote the technology as a economically transformative. Last week the UK chancellor also launched a drive to get millions more Britons using AI. line graph charting rise in reports of deceptive scheming by AI programmes The study, by the Centre for Long-Term Resilience (CLTR), gathered thousands of …

Increasing space debris threatens US systems, NRO warns

Increasing space debris threatens US systems, NRO warns

A dramatic rise in the number of satellites in orbit is increasing the amount of space debris, posing a critical threat to the capabilities of America’s national space systems. During his keynote address to the Space Policy, Science, and Technology Symposium hosted by the Purdue University Policy Research Institute, Maj. Gen. Chris Povak, deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), warned of the ongoing risks of building space debris. Povak giving his keynote address to the Space Policy, Science, and Technology Symposium “The future gets more complex, not less. More satellites, more debris, more competition,” he said. “Managing these challenges simultaneously continues to be priority number one for this community, to ensure that we continue to fulfil our mission to the American people.” Some space debris is so small it can’t be tracked With space becoming increasingly congested over the past two decades, Povak explained, there are hundreds of thousands of objects in orbit – including many that are less than 10 centimetres in diameter and too small to track reliably – that could …

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testifies during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on worldwide threats on March 18. A closed session immediately followed the hearing. Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images During the Senate Select Committee’s annual worldwide threat assessment hearing on Wednesday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard described how tactics of foreign Islamist terrorist groups have shifted since the peak of ISIS and al-Qaida activity a decade ago. “Increasingly we are seeing less indicators of large-scale organized, complex threats or attacks,” Gabbard said, “and instead [have seen] efforts focused on individuals either who have been radicalized by Islamist propaganda and may not have ever had contact with ISIS or al-Qaida, for example; and others who have had contact, of which we are able to have more indications of.” But Gabbard’s remarks largely skirted a question that has arisen in the wake of several violent incidents on American soil this month: Has U.S. involvement in fighting in Iran increased potential threat from those very entities? Two of the incidents, …

Euthanasia of the Mentally Ill Increasing in the Netherlands

Euthanasia of the Mentally Ill Increasing in the Netherlands

This republished article first appeared in The National Review’s The Corner As the West lunges toward propagating a right to be made dead, the deleterious societal impacts of being legally “MAIDed” (killed by “medical assistance in dying”) are becoming increasingly clear. A recent professional analysis published in the Psychiatric Times illustrates the lethal influence on mentally ill suicidal people — including youth — in the Netherlands. From “Psychiatric Euthanasia in the Netherlands: Young People, Procedural Medicine, and the Limits of Psychiatry” (citations omitted): Requests for euthanasia on psychiatric grounds have risen sharply, with a disproportionate increase among young adults and, more recently, minors. The Dutch model, once presented internationally as careful and balanced, is now attracting attention for a different reason: growing uncertainty about whether psychiatry has crossed a boundary it cannot coherently justify. This increase has had a deleterious impact on suicidal youth: The numerical trend among youth underscores why concern has intensified. For many years, psychiatric euthanasia in the Netherlands was virtually nonexistent. Between 2002 and 2010, only 1 or 2 cases per year were reported …

These six exercise habits could be increasing your risk of injury, according to a sports medicine expert

Injuries can feel like they come out of nowhere sometimes, but this is rarely the case, according to Dr Shady Hassan MD, an interventional pain and sports medicine physician and the founder of NefraHealth. He says that often his patients are injured because of repetitive habits that prime their bodies to fail, rather than a single accident. Our approach to exercise might also be making us more likely to end up with chronic problems or weakness. On top of that, our behaviors outside of the gym might be increasing our injury risk, too. You may like Here, Hassan highlights the six chief drivers of injury that he sees and explains the changes you can implement to avoid long-term issues. 1. Going from zero to full speed on the weekend “There’s a particular type of patient I see a lot,” says Hassan, describing a midlifer returning to exercise once their kids are a little older or someone who has a new hobby. “Mentally, they still feel 25. Physically, they’re not,” says Hassan. “It’s in that gap …

ISABEL INFANTES / REUTERS Three high-profile defections in less than three weeks from the Conservative Party to Reform UK: In the United Kingdom, the right is shifting ever more rapidly toward the far right. On Monday, January 26, Suella Braverman, who served as interior minister under both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, confirmed that she was giving up her Tory party membership to join Nigel Farage’s anti-immigration movement. She follows in the footsteps of Robert Jenrick, Sunak’s former secretary of state for migration, who crossed the Rubicon on January 15, and Nadhim Zahawi, who briefly served as Boris Johnson’s chancellor of the Exchequer, and made the switch three days earlier. In total, around 20 current and former Conservative officials have moved to the far right since 2024. “I feel like I’ve come home!” said Braverman during a joint press conference with Farage in central London. “I share that love for that country …

How an increasing number of people are trying to cheat on their driving tests | UK News

Attempts to cheat on driving tests in Britain soared by 47% in a year, an investigation has found, sparking road safety concerns. Some 2,844 cases were recorded in the year to the end of September 2025, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) figures show. This has increased from 1,940 during the previous 12 months, and 1,274 in 2018/19. Methods have included using wireless earphones connected to a hidden phone and hiring impersonators. Cheats are “putting other road users at risk”, motoring research charity the RAC Foundation said. The DVSA attributed the rise in recorded cases to a combination of more cheating and improved detection. You need javascript enabled to view this content Enable javascript to share Share New rules for drivers over 70 Technology-assisted cheating on theory tests – such as using an earpiece connected to a concealed phone via Bluetooth – comprised the biggest proportion of incidents in 2024/25, at 1,113. The increase in cheating comes amid a large backlog for practical driving tests, though the DVSA said it has no evidence to link …

Mpox may be spreading asymptomatically, greatly increasing its threat, finds new study

Mpox was first detected in the late-1950s, and there have been sporadic outbreaks of the virus in the years since. The largest outbreak to date began in the summer of 2022, a variant of the virus known as clade II spread through the Western world, including in Britain, the US, and large parts of Europe, mainly between men who have sex with men. At least 114,000 people have been infected with the variant in the last four years, 220 of which have died. More recently, a new variant of the virus, clade 1b, emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in late 2023 after undergoing a rare mutation. The virus spread rapidly through the war-torn DRC and the exact figures have still not been verified, but it is thought that there were at least 71,000 cases and almost 2,000 deaths – mainly in young children with weakened immune systems from malnutrition and the impact of other diseases like measles and malaria. The variant has also been detected in several other countries, including Britain, the …
