The head of the World Health Organisation has issued a message to reassure residents of the Spanish island where passengers from a hantavirus-stricken cruise ship are due to be evacuated. The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, carrying more than 140 passengers and crew, is making its way to Spain’s Canary Islands, situated off the West African coast, and is anticipated to dock at Tenerife this morning. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived on Saturday at the island, where he, alongside Spain’s Health Minister Monica Garcia and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, planned to oversee the disembarkation of passengers and selected crew members. “I know you are worried. A man jailed for multiple rapes and deliberately infecting men with HIV may have more victims, police have warned. Adam Hall, 43, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 23 years, at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday, where he was convicted in March of raping four men and intentionally passing on the virus to three more. Hall hid his HIV status from partners, failed to take medication to keep his viral load low, then had unprotected sex with men, sometimes raping them. He was convicted of five counts of rape and seven counts of causing grievous bodily harm – by deliberately infecting younger partners with HIV after meeting them in bars in the Newcastle area or on the Grindr dating app. Image: Adam Hall. But according to a startling report published in the journal Current Biology this week, visitors to the scenic ecological reserve have routinely ignored clear warnings to stay far away from the caverns. After almost 9,000 hours of recorded activity, authors tallied over 200 human incursions into Python Cave, including international tourists and school children. While no reported cases were tied to these instances, the study’s authors warn that future contact could put visitors (and untold others) at risk of contracting the nightmarish virus. A measles outbreak has spread across several schools in north London with some children needing hospital treatment. More than 60 suspected cases of measles have been recorded across seven schools and a nursery in Enfield, The Sunday Times reports. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported 34 confirmed measles cases in Enfield between 1 January to 9 February. Chronic infected wounds can take over daily life, especially for people living with diabetes. These wounds often refuse to heal, cause constant pain, and invite dangerous infections that resist antibiotics. Doctors struggle to treat them, and patients can feel trapped in a cycle of care that never seems to end. New research now points to a surprising helper in this fight: ordinary sunlight. A team of scientists has developed a nanospray that uses natural light to kill bacteria, stop bleeding, ease pain, and speed healing, all at once. The work focuses on diabetic foot ulcers, one of the most serious and common chronic wounds. The findings suggest a future where treating infected wounds becomes simpler, less painful, and far more accessible. The study describes a new material called SPS, short for sunlight powered spray. It is made from tiny self assembled particles that combine a near infrared light sensitive compound with chitosan oligosaccharides, a substance derived from natural sugars. Proposed compensation for victims of “unethical testing” at a college, leaving them with HIV and hepatitis, has been branded “ridiculous” by a charity. Between the 1970s and early 1990s more than 30,000 people in the UK were infected with HIV and hepatitis after being given contaminated blood and blood products in what was dubbed the worst treatment disaster in NHS history. More than £2bn has now been paid in compensation to victims of the infected blood scandal. However, a charity has raised “profound concerns” about an element of the payouts for people who were victims of “unethical research”. Pupils at the Lord Mayor’s Treloar’s College in Hampshire, who were undergoing haemophilia treatment, were also experimented on without their knowledge by NHS clinicians, who knew the dangers it posed. The Infected Blood Public Inquiry’s report, published in May 2024, found that boys with the disorder who attended the school were treated as “objects for research” and were given “multiple, riskier” treatments.
