Hotel Exile by Jane Rogoyska review – the remarkable story of a wartime institution | History books

The word “hotel” is cognate with “hostel” and “hospital”, and for a few short years in the middle of the 20th century, one Paris establishment functioned as all three. Hôtel Lutetia sits on the city’s Left Bank and exudes a certain nonconformist swagger. Opened in 1910 and built in a style that bobbed between art nouveau and art deco, it soon attracted an artistic and bohemian crowd. Hemingway hung out there in the 1920s, as did Picasso, Matisse and André Gide. James Joyce, resident in the city for 20 years, wrote a chunk of Ulysses sitting at one of its tables. In this outstanding book, which has been shortlisted for the Women’s prize for nonfiction, Jane Rogoyska reports that by the mid-1930s the Lutetia had become headquarters to German political dissidents fleeing Hitler. “The Lutetia Crowd”, as the Nazis disdainfully dubbed them, comprised the intellectual cream of the Weimar Republic. Heinrich Mann, novelist brother of the more famous Thomas, was the head of the organising committee that worked to bring down the Nazi regime from …

DePaul Art Museum Advisory Board Calls on School to Save Institution

The members of the advisory board of Chicago’s DePaul Art Museum have penned a scathing letter to the leadership of DePaul University, which houses the museum, to reconsider its decision to shutter the 40-year-old institution on June 30, which was announced last month. The letter is addressed to school president Robert L. Manuel, provost Salma Ghanem, and other leaders as well as the board of trustees of the university, which is sited in the Windy City’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. It is signed by advisory board chair Scott J. Hunter, a retired professor who taught at the University of Chicago, along with other board members including artists Brendan Fernandes, Rachel L.S. Harper, and Melissa Leandro; former Expo Chicago head Tony Karman; Sotheby’s senior vice president Gary Metzner; and art adviser Lynn Manilow. Many members of the advisory board have served for more than a decade, and some date their participation to before the museum took up residence in a building opened in 2011. ‘The US Supreme Court tariff decision helps dispel the image of an institution that has become entirely subservient to the president’

‘The US Supreme Court tariff decision helps dispel the image of an institution that has become entirely subservient to the president’

By ruling, on Friday, February 20, that Donald Trump could not rely on a 1977 law to impose tariffs on more than 100 countries, as he has done since April 2, 2025, the Supreme Court handed down a major decision that resonated worldwide. The justices reminded the government of the limits of its power. Under the US Constitution, the imposition of tariffs falls solely within the powers of Congress, and the cited law does not grant the president of the United States this authority. Despite the apparent clarity of the outcome, the 164-page decision reveals deep fault lines, tempering the lessons that can be drawn from it. The significance of the Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump decision can be explained by both the stakes and the context. The imposition of tariffs has been a central lever in Trump’s foreign policy, which he presented as essential to the “survival” of the US. For the Court, this was the first review of a key element of the second Trump administration’s agenda. While the administration had largely prevailed …

Wisconsin Museum Treasurer Admits to Stealing $70,000 from Institution

The former treasurer of the Hearthstone Historic House Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin—touted as “the only building still standing from the dawn of electricity” on its website—admitted to stealing $70,000 from the institution. According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Steven Jahnke confessed to embezzlement and now faces one count of theft in a business setting. As reported by the local radio station WTAQ, “board members became suspicious of transactions apparently not related to museum operations, including cruises, vacation travel and vehicle repair. Additionally, some accounts deposited through the community foundation were depleted, despite having a restricted status.” Related Articles Other suspicious charges included property taxes for Jahncke’s residence and Amazon purchases sent to the former treasurer’s home. According to the criminal complaint, Jahncke claimed he sometimes “confused his personal cards with the museum’s card” and stated: “I did embezzle funds to pay for my own expenses.” On the National Register of Historic Places, the Hearthstone Historic House Museum states a claim to being “the first house anywhere in the world to be incandescently illuminated by …

Indeed, neither the World Series nor the Super Bowl existed then, nor did iconic landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge or the Statue of Liberty. Yet, the Westminster Kennel Club’s dog show, established in 1877, has not only endured but is now set to celebrate its 150th annual edition. “The trappings, the window dressing, you know, changes over time. But what’s at the core, what’s the heart of it, which is the love of dogs … that has been the same,” says club …
