Maya City, Hidden for More Than 1000 Years, Discovered Intact in Mexico
A joint Slovenian-Mexican archeological team has discovered an undisturbed Mayan city in a remote area of Campeche, Mexico. Located deep within the jungles of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the city—which the researchers have named “Minanbé,” a Maya Yucatec phrase meaning “there is no road”—had been hidden by vegetation for over a thousand years. The site features a 43-foot-high pyramid temple (about the height of a four-story apartment building), and 14 carved altars and stelae, according to Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which authorized the expedition. The discovery is the culmination of lead archaeologist Ivan Šprajc’s three-decade-long exploration of the Central Maya Lowlands, home to between 9 and 11 million people during the Maya civilization’s Late Classic period (600–900 CE). Iran is likely preparing for a resumption of hostilities with the US and Israel, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think tank assessed on Tuesday, pointing to a series of military movements and internal security exercises as signs of active preparation for renewed war. The Washington-based institute, which has been publishing daily assessments of the war, said the Iranian regime appeared to view preparations for renewed fighting as inseparable from preparations to suppress domestic unrest. Whovians, rejoice. The BBC is about to unlock a piece of Doctor Who history that even the TARDIS might have forgotten. Two lost episodes of Doctor Who, the iconic sci-fi series, will broadcast in April, the showrunner for the current season confirmed. The two 1965 episodes, The Nightmare Begins and Devil’s Planet, were donated to the charitable trust Film Is Fabulous by the estate of an anonymous collector. “The collector did recognize what he had, but how he acquired them has been lost to time,” Professor Justin Smith Leicester of De Montfort University, who led the recovery effort, told the broadcaster. The researchers said that while most of the donor’s private collection was destroyed by water damage, the Doctor Who episodes were intact.
