(The Conversation) — The war with Iran has led to a surge in anti-Muslim rhetoric – spilling into political discourse. U.S. Rep. Randy Fine of Florida posted on X that “the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one,” and added in another post, “We need more Islamophobia, not less.” Similarly, U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas called for stopping the entry of “Muslims immigrating to America.” A study by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found that the average number of Islamophobic posts jumped from 2,000 to 6,000 each day on X alone in the first six days of the conflict. I have studied the impact of Islamophobia on mental health over the past two decades, following soaring hate crimes in the wake of 9/11. Research consistently shows that negative portrayals of Muslims shape public attitudes toward Muslims and can lead to increased discrimination, hate crimes and psychological consequences. NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s police commissioner said Monday that authorities are investigating whether men who brought improvised explosive devices to a protest outside New York City’s mayoral residence were inspired by ISIS. The devices, which did not explode, were hurled during raucous counterprotests Saturday near Gracie Mansion during a “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” event led by the far right activist Jake Lang. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the explosives could have caused serious injury or death. Two people are in custody for their alleged roles in the confrontation but they have not been charged, Tisch said during a news conference. Police are working with federal prosecutors and the FBI, which has assigned agents with the bureau’s Joint Terrorism Task Force to the investigation. “I can confirm this morning that this is being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism,” Tisch said. Pop star Chappell Roan deleted a tribute to French actress Brigitte Bardot after learning of the late actress’ far-right views. Bardot passed away at her home in the southern French town of Saint-Tropez over the weekend. The star of more than 50 films, she retired from the screen before her 40th birthday and spent years focused on animal rights activism. In later years, she used the guise of animal rights to level attacks on Muslims in France. She was cited five times for “inciting racial hatred,” largely over comments that claimed Muslims were “invading” and “destroying” France. A university should train students in Islamic practices, provide gender segregated prayer spaces with washing facilities, and observe ‘Islamophobia Awareness Month’ every year, a new report has said. The report, which analyses “lived experiences” of Muslim students, researchers and staff at Loughborough University, also suggested expressing surprise at the number of times Muslim pray and asking about the hijab could be forms of “Islamophobic microaggressions”. The report was funded by the Aziz Foundation, as part of its “Muslim friendly universities audit project“. The Aziz Foundation is one of the founders of the British Muslim Trust, which the Government awarded a £2.6 million contract in July to “monitor and tackle anti-Muslim hatred”. The Aziz Foundation also provides administrative and financial support to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, which authored an ‘Islamophobia’ definition that has been widely criticised for conflating and race with religion and threatening free speech around Islam.
