Robert Jenrick’s attack on Andy Burnham’s pro-migration stance has one rather substantial problem: the Reform MP’s own time in office. Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, is hoping to be selected as Labour’s candidate in the upcoming Makerfield by-election. If victorious in the selection process and at the Makerfield ballot box, Burnham is expected to try and oust Keir Starmer from No.10. But Reform won all eight wards in the constituency during the local election earlier this month – and so the party is already trying to demolish the mayor’s reputation. In a social media video, Jenrick claimed: “If Burnham wins, a million low skilled migrants will be allowed to stay and get British citizenship in the next few years. “And he won’t stop the boats. Robert Jenrick had a very tense reunion with one of his onetime Conservative colleagues on live TV on Friday as they argued over his painful defection to Reform. Jenrick, who is now Reform’s Treasury spokesperson, was celebrating his party’s success on the BBC after it won more than 400 seats in the local elections in England. But he was sat next to Victoria Atkins, the Conservatives’ shadow environment secretary – and she quickly got personal. “Robert and I haven’t actually spoken to each other since I supported his leadership [bid to take over the Tories],” the MP for Louth and Horncastle said. “So I’m surprised he’s so quick to can all of the work he did in the government when he was immigration minister, but also the work that we were trying to do since the general election in order to rebuild.” She pointed out that Jenrick was also “part of the team that made those mistakes” when the Conservatives were in government. Given that Robert Jenrick was pushed before he got the chance to jump across to Reform UK at a time and in a fashion of his own choosing, he and his new party leader decided that they may as well get on with it and face the media. There have been “no tears” shed over Robert Jenrick’s departure from the Conservative Party, former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has said. Speaking to Sky News political editor Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Baroness Davidson said she thinks there will even be a “mini bounce” within the Tories over how Kemi Badenoch handled his defection to Reform on Thursday.
