Why pushback is growing against New Jersey’s crazy e-bike law

Why pushback is growing against New Jersey’s crazy e-bike law

New Jersey’s controversial new e-bike law was pitched as a way to improve safety, but with its July 19 implementation date rapidly approaching, a growing number of riders, advocates, and even lawmakers are arguing that the state may have gone too far. A rally at the New Jersey Statehouse last week drew a large crowd of supporters calling for the law to be amended or replaced. At the center of the controversy is the fact that the legislation treats nearly every type of e-bike the same, from a 20 mph (32 km/h) pedal-assist commuter bike to the much faster electric motorcycles and e-motos that have become increasingly common on streets. The law requires all e-bikers to be licensed in the state and sets out insurance and registration requirements. The distinction between electric bicycles and e-motos is one that many of us in the e-bike industry have been making for years. While media headlines often lump everything with two wheels and a battery into the “e-bike” category, there’s a world of difference between a Class 1 …

Exclusive: Mayor Zohran Mamdani Is Launching Affordable NYC-Inspired World Cup Jerseys

Mere hours after he reveled in his Knicks pulling off the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has secured another major sports-related W. Just in time for the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off today across the US, Canada, and Mexico, the mayor’s office is dropping a trio of affordable NYC-inspired soccer jerseys. The jerseys were designed by Arsh Raziuddin and crafted in partnership with Mazzi Sports, a family-owned apparel studio in Brooklyn, and feature the same retro graphic style as the city’s charming World Cup campaign: There’s a soccer-ball-ified Big Apple logo over the heart and a little pigeon sitting opposite it, with “NEW YORK CITY” emblazoned across the chest and “26” on the back. There are also three bold color combos to choose from: a classic black and white; a taxi-esque yellow and black; and a blue and orange-y red that can work for cheering on the Knicks, the Mets, or the USMNT, depending on the day. New Jersey’s $150 transit fare will have ‘chilling effect’, FIFA warns

April 18 : New Jersey’s decision to charge $150 for round-trip transit to World Cup games will have a “chilling effect” on fans, FIFA have warned as the fare represents a 10-fold increase from the usual $15 for the route. The dramatic price hike adds to the cost of World Cup match tickets, which can run into the thousands of dollars, especially on the resale market. The MetLife Stadium is set to host eight matches, including the July 19 final. New Jersey Transit CEO Kris Kolluri had defended the pricing, citing higher passenger volumes due to closed public parking around the stadium and increased costs from World Cup security requirements. Heimo Schirgi, the Chief Operating Officer for the 2026 World Cup, said the price increase would force fans to look at alternative options. “The NJ Transit current pricing model will have a chilling effect. Elevated fares inevitably push fans toward alternative transportation options,” Schirgi said in a statement. “This increases concerns of congestion, late arrivals, and creates broader ripple effects that ultimately diminish the economic …

It’s Time to Kill the MLB City Connect Jerseys

It’s Time to Kill the MLB City Connect Jerseys

The business of sports is bigger than ever, which means there’s plenty of room for some cuts. We can scale back on all things gambling, for starters. It’d be great for sports broadcasters to scale back the provocative hot takes and keep their focus on the gameplay. And then there’s the aesthetic issue: Pretty much every sports team has way too many jerseys now, and an overwhelming number of them are hideous. The NBA keeps pumping out City Editions every single year, spawning the obvious and inevitable problem of running out of ideas. The NFL, meanwhile, conjured up their Rivalries uniforms last season, with some stunning entries and a few brutal flops. Now, it’s MLB’s turn, as the 2026 City Connect harvest has bloomed. According to MLB, the purpose of the City Connect uniforms—aside from giving fans one more thing to blow cash on—is to reflect “the energy and pride of each club’s community, offering bold and expressive interpretations that celebrate both team history and what’s ahead for the game.” Since their launch in 2021, …

Nike’s AI Designed World Cup Jerseys Are a Disaster

Nike’s AI Designed World Cup Jerseys Are a Disaster

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Is there anything about this upcoming World Cup — which will be taking place across the entire continent of North America — that isn’t shaping up to be a total disaster? FIFA seems to be nakedly price gouging fans on ticket prices, and may have even outright scammed them on the seats they overpaid for. President Trump threatened to deploy ICE agents at World Cup cities and stadiums. US airports have descended into chaos as hundreds of TSA workers quit after working weeks without pay amid a partial government shutdown. Now, adding to the chaos, Nike’s newly debuted collection of World Cup kits — which were reportedly made with the help of AI — has turned out to be a sartorial catastrophe. As The Guardian reported, eagle-eyed fans noticed that the jerseys sported by their favorite athletes, including France’s megastar Kylian Mbappé, looked egregiously misshapen. Their fit physiques were overshadowed by a strange bulge on their shoulder seams …

Joy Asico/AP hide caption toggle caption Joy Asico/AP TRENTON, N.J. — The race in New Jersey between a onetime political director for Sen. Bernie Sanders and a former congressman was too early to call Thursday, in a special House Democratic primary for a seat that was vacated after Mikie Sherill was elected governor. Former U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski started election night with a significant lead over Analilia Mejia, based largely on early results from mail-in ballots. The margin narrowed as results from votes cast that day were tallied. With more than 61,000 votes counted, Mejia led Malinowski by 486, or less than 1 percentage point. All three counties in the district report some mail-in ballots yet to be processed. Also, mail-in ballots postmarked by election day can arrive as late as Wednesday and still be counted. Malinowski did better than Mejia among the mail-in ballots already counted in all three counties, leaving the outcome of the …

Adidas Turned Latin America’s Best Soccer Jerseys Into Sneakers

The Colombia Gazelle steals a move or two from the team’s 2026 kit. Wrapped in a yellow ‘Bold Gold,’ it’s accented with blue and red to represent the team’s colors. It’s also covered in a subtle butterfly pattern, which is a symbol of hope, change, and love championed by the late Colombian author and journalist Gabriel García Márquez. Then there’s the Mexico Gazelle. While it’s tough to pinpoint exactly which specific kit it borrows from, if we had to guess, we’re thinking 1992 or 1996. Decked out in ‘Collegiate Green,’ it’s contrasted with white and red on the heel badge and sidewalls—an ode to the country’s tricolor flag. Adidas Gazelle Indoor ‘Mexico’ Adidas To round things off, all three pairs sit on top of classic gum soles to keep things reassuringly old school, letting the kits do the talking without tipping into cosplay territory. It’s a smart move from Adidas: nostalgic enough to hit the soccer romantics, but wearable enough to slot straight into your rotation. If you’re already deep in World Cup mode, consider …
