Chancellor John Healey faces serious challenges in funding Burnham’s grand aspirations
The UK’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham, laid out a radical agenda in his short speech upon taking office. He called for a long-term strategy to reverse 40 years of Thatcherism, and the privatisation and centralisation that resulted. Wisely, he put a ten-year horizon on these objectives and it is now up to his new chancellor, John Healey, to realise his ambitions. Sensibly, Burnham has also announced less costly but limited measures to deal with the cost of living and the housing crisis – intended to convince the public that he understands their concerns. So far these include a pledge to cap single bus fares in England at £2, cut VAT on electricity bills from October, and end rough sleeping (with no time frame specified). The government said that the cut in energy bills is fully funded by scrapping plans for digital IDs. But spending watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has pointed out that the funding for this was set to be covered by further, albeit modest, cuts to other government departments. John Esposito, scholar who fought against misconceptions of Islam, dies
(RNS) — Public opinion of Islam has veered dramatically over the past 50 years between those who have characterized it as a violent faith fundamentally opposed to Western values and those who have sought to understand Islam’s plurality, diversity and complexity as practiced in the lives of Muslims. Among the latter was John Esposito, one of the foremost non-Muslim scholars of Islam, who died July 15 at the age of 86 following complications from heart surgery. Esposito, who was professor emeritus of religion, international affairs and Islamic studies at Georgetown University, was distinguished for his careful scholarship that sought to correct Western misconceptions about Islam. In as many as 55 books and a lifetime of teaching, he challenged the “Clash of Civilizations” theory of Islam as proposed by scholars Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis. John Hannah says his new crime show is a true love letter to Benidorm

At the risk of borrowing straight from Mrs Merton in her famous chat with Debbie McGee, my first question to John Hannah of his new TV role must be: exactly what did attract him to the part of a washed-up bar owner turned detective on the shores of the Mediterranean for the show Benidorm Is Murder? He laughs. “It sounds like a cliché but it was the script. The dialogue feels believable when you say it. So, it was the script, and it was funny.” He pauses. “And it was the Mediterranean.” Sure enough, his role of Dennis Crown, a former policeman now running a seaside tavern, furnishes him with plenty of zingers, helping place the show firmly at the upbeat end of a very full TV crime canon.
