Prince Julian of Sweden, 5, sparks outpouring of sympathy as fans spot mystery injury

The Swedish royal family has shared their latest family portrait, but fans couldn’t help but notice that one individual had a minor health hiccup. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia posed for their summer family photo alongside their children, Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, Princess Madeleine, and their grandchildren.  It’s an annual tradition for the Scandinavian royals, who gather at their summer residence, Solliden Palace in Borgholm on the island of Öland, for a number of celebrations, including Victoriadagen, also known as Victoria Day, which marks Princess Victoria’s birthday on 14 July. This year, after enjoying a concert in the Borgholm Castle ruins, the family assembled outside the venue for a photograph that was later shared on social media by the royal house. The post was met with floods of compliments from royal fans. However, a few couldn’t help but notice that one of the youngest family members was looking a little worse for wear. Pretend you’re dead. Queer author Julián Delgado Lopera will carry you

Pretend you’re dead. Queer author Julián Delgado Lopera will carry you

The purse had two heads, both bald. It wore two different eye shadows in shades of fluorescent blue and green; circles of neon pink blush on each face; silver dangly earrings on all four ears and both mouths occupied with cigarettes. I’d say this was the centerpiece of the outfit, but no; not even. Julián Delgado Lopera appeared onstage, pulled his brand new novel, “Pretend You’re Dead and I Carry You,” out of the purse with two heads and read a sticky-noted passage aloud to the crowd. It was the Thursday stop of his book tour at the Lab in San Francisco, not far from where Delgado Lopera once lived for more than 15 years; and on this night, it was also his 38th birthday. He celebrated the affair wearing a spectacular getup largely sourced from Colombian fashion designer Adriana Kanal of KNL Style: padded, black-and-white wings over a latex vest, a fishnetted top and sky-high platform boots. “I think the thing with writing is that sometimes there’s a perception, as if we don’t have …

Drawn to the Void | Julian Bell

Drawn to the Void | Julian Bell

Before there were balloons made of rubber, there were bladders. You tied up one of the exits of the sac of elastic membrane extracted from the butchered pig, you poked a straw in the other, and you blew. The inflated globe was light and buoyant. If clad with leather, it became a ball to kick. Whether passed between hands or feet, it drew players together, a magnet for their eyes and energies. And we welcome what draws us together. Or do we curse it? Why do people team up around an emptiness, so much spent breath? All too easily it maddens them. Authorities have forever linked soccer with the misrule of the mob: What bounces is at best frivolous, at worst dangerous. Two boys tussling over a bladder in a three-foot-high canvas painted by Joseph Wright of Derby in the late 1760s snarl up in a whirlpool of pain, each twisting the other’s right ear. Their struggle has upturned the tabletop candle that illuminates the scene and any moment will surely extinguish it, effacing the …

A Highway 78 spring road trip through Julian and Borrego Springs

A Highway 78 spring road trip through Julian and Borrego Springs

In early spring, the California mountain town of Julian sits suspended between seasons. At more than 4,000 feet, up in the Cuyamaca Mountains, it rests among coastal live oak woodlands and Coulter pine forests. Snow sometimes dusts the surrounding slopes, melting by afternoon into damp earth as manzanita and mountain lilac begin to flower. Along Main Street, the mingled scents of woodsmoke and apple pie drift from storefronts. It is here that my journey along State Route 78 begins, following its long eastward descent from the mountain forest into the stark badlands of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, then skirting the southern edge of the Salton Sea, crossing the Algodones Dunes and continuing toward the Colorado River — a 140-mile corridor spanning one of the most dramatic ecological transitions across public lands in the American Southwest. This road trip continues a series exploring California’s overlooked scenic highways, inspired in part by artist Earl Thollander’s “Back Roads of California,” whose sketches and travel notes celebrated a slower way of seeing. After tracing Highway 127 along the edge …

Introducing Julian Klausner, the Rising Star Behind Dries Van Noten

Introducing Julian Klausner, the Rising Star Behind Dries Van Noten

The year 2025 was an inflection point in contemporary fashion. More than 20 leading labels, including Chanel, Bottega Veneta, and Valentino, welcomed new creative leads. It was an industry-wide reaction to a slowdown in luxury spending and the welcoming of an, in some cases overdue, season of change. Some of those designers were familiar names, like Jonathan Anderson, who went to Dior from Loewe, or Demna, who left Balenciaga for Gucci (a phenomenon sardonically referred to in the industry as “musical chairs”). Then there was Julian Klausner, who was promoted to creative director at Dries Van Noten in December of 2024. Klausner, 34, who had spent close to six years as the brand’s head of womenswear, was virtually unknown. His appointment came at a delicate time for the cult label that Van Noten, a venerated Belgian designer famously known for being part of the much mythologized “Antwerp Six,” founded in 1986. The designer announced his retirement at 65 in March of 2024, sending an industry-wide shockwave. A glorious career was ending, as was an era …
