Bannerman is Swiss Ghanian. An aspiring artist with a notable following even before joining the group, she was scouted on social media to join the competition midway for a spot in Katseye. The nearly three-year-old group was born out of a cutthroat competition orchestrated by Hybe—the multibillion-dollar South Korean powerhouse behind the biggest boy band on the planet, BTS—and the American label Geffen Records. Their objective: build an international girl group in the K-pop mold that could conquer the Western mainstream. Only 20 of the 120,000 young contestants from around the world who auditioned for Katseye were chosen to battle it out in a grueling, tear-inducing 12-week boot camp. Girl group KATSEYE took the stage at the American Music Awards Monday, performing their latest single “Pinky Up.” The six-member outfit — made up of members Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia and Yoonchae — went into the Memorial Day awards ceremony up for three awards including new artist of the year, best music video and breakthrough pop artist. KATSEYE appeared as a five-member group at the AMAs, though, as member Manon remains on hiatus. For “Pinky Up” the group kicked things off with an onstage tea party with giant teddy bears interspersed among the tables. KATSEYE then marched to the center of the stage as they delivered a dance-heavy performance, complete with quite a few pinkies up moments. The bright pink backdrop also featured teddy bears. KATSEYE and the ladies of Huntrix, EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna worked to seal the Honmoon during night one of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The six-member girl group, currently performing as a five-member group, as member Manon is on hiatus, made their Coachella debut on Friday. The group took over the Shara stage during the 8 p.m. slot. In a surprise move, KATSEYE brought out the ladies of Huntrix, the fictional girl group from KPop Demon Hunters, comprised of singers EJAE, Ami and Nuna. The newly formed supergroup performed Demon Hunters’ award-winning anthem “Golden” during KATSEYE’s set, making for a touching moment among all the women.
