6 Indie Sneaker Brands Every Burned-Out Kicks Enthusiast Should Know

6 Indie Sneaker Brands Every Burned-Out Kicks Enthusiast Should Know

Over the last few years, the sneaker world has felt predictable and somewhat stagnant. The mainstream Goliaths—Nike and Adidas—keep printing money. Meanwhile, HOKA and On are lacing up at the front of the pack, carving out a lane for themselves in the performance arena. But here’s the fun part: even with those four heavyweights taking up shelf space, there’s still plenty of room for smaller labels and independent brands to create their own path. Last year delivered a tidal wave of collaborations—some brilliant, some borderline unhinged, but the real story was in the silhouettes. The geriatric aesthetic refused to clock out, and torpedo-shaped sneakers started popping up everywhere. Add in high-end collabs and outdoors labels spinning off increasingly sick sub-labels, and it’s safe to say brand loyalty isn’t what it used to be. Sneakerheads are free agents now—and honestly, I love to see it. With the footwear landscape pleasantly muddied, there’s never been a better time to get familiar with the independent and under-the-radar names doing things differently. From a Finnish hiking label teaming up …

Video Shows Man Bleeding After Flailing Robot Kicks Him in Nose

Video Shows Man Bleeding After Flailing Robot Kicks Him in Nose

It’s all fun and games until the nimble little robot starts flailing demonically. In footage circulating online, a Unitree G1 robot loses balance while performing in front of a crowd in China. As it hits the ground, it uncontrollably thrashes its limbs in all directions, hitting a man in the nose.  The man, who appeared to be the robot’s operator, had tried to grab the humanoid machine to stop it from tipping over. Later in the video, he can be seen squatting on the ground nursing a bleeding nose. While the injury didn’t appear life-threatening, the incident is a warning sign of how these popular androids can accidentally cause physical harm, something that becomes an increasingly serious risk as the machines continue to spend more time around humans. Another robot-caused human injury has occurred with G1. With existing reinforcement learning policies, their robot is trained to do whatever it takes to stand up after a fall. During that recovery attempt, it kicked someone in the nose, causing heavy bleeding and a possible… pic.twitter.com/1BS9COAaLX — Eren …

MLS 2026 Kicks Off This Weekend With a New Setup on Apple TV

Millions of soccer fans around the world are readying themselves for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to start in June, but until then, Major League Soccer can entertain all US fans of the sport. Changes are coming to MLS, which kicks off its regular season on Feb. 21 with games throughout Saturday and Sunday. You can watch every match on Apple TV (formerly Apple TV Plus) — without a separate paid subscription to MLS Season Pass. The $13-a-month streaming service now includes access to MLS at no extra charge, a welcome change in a fresh season that brings all 30 clubs to the field on opening weekend. Apple TV subscribers can tune in from around the world to see Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, along with LAFC’s Son Heung Min and the San Jose Earthquakes’ big new signing Timo Werner. This is also the last year the league will run its games from spring through autumn, because beginning with its 2027-2028 season, MLS will switch to a summer-to-spring schedule in line with European leagues.  Sunday Night Soccer …

Rio Mayor Hands City’s Key to King Momo as Carnival Kicks Off

Rio Mayor Hands City’s Key to King Momo as Carnival Kicks Off

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The mayor of Rio de Janeiro gave King Momo the key to the Brazilian city on Friday, ushering in the symbolic Carnival monarch’s five-day reign over the festivities. Until Wednesday, Momo is charged with presiding over the revelry, participating in the parades and promoting the joy of partygoers. His ruling over the metropolis in the South American country symbolizes society being turned upside down during Carnival. This year’s Momo is 30-year-old Danilo Vieira, a Rio native who will be taking charge of the celebrations. “The rules still apply, of course,” Vieira told The Associated Press before his symbolic coronation. “We have to follow the rules of our city, our country, but Carnival is run by me.” In 2024, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes issued a decree making the key ceremony an annual official event, obliging his successors to participate. Rio City Hall expects about 6 million revelers to participate in the raucous street parties, where groups made up of musicians, percussionists and stilt artists draw thousands of partygoers, many …

Berlin 2026 Kicks Off With Shahrbanoo Sadat’s ‘No Good Men’

Berlin 2026 Kicks Off With Shahrbanoo Sadat’s ‘No Good Men’

The 2026 Berlin Film Festival is officially underway with the world premiere of Shahrbanoo Sadat’s No Good Men firing up the Berlinale Palast. Afghan director-star Sadat was joined by her fellow cast members Anwar Hashimi, Liam Hussaini, Yasin Negah, and Torkan Omari on the red carpet as cold, wet weather, unsurprisingly, left bundled-up attendees a little windswept Thursday night. The crowd inside the Berlinale Palast theater was a who’s-who of European cinema’s brightest talent, as well as a smattering of U.S. stars, including Neil Patrick Harris, Daniel Bruhl, Bella Ramsey, Lars Eidinger, and more. Ahead of the movie’s screening, however, it was Michelle Yeoh’s turn to pick up the honorary Golden Bear. She was given an effusive congratulatory intro by multi-Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, who recently collaborated with her on the short film Sandiwara, premiering in Berlin on Friday.  “Michelle Yeoh is a once-in-a-generation screen presence, the kind who doesn’t just appear in movies, but the kind that redefines the temperature of the room,” Baker said. “You feel it shift when she walks on screen. …

Hard-fought New Jersey election kicks off a year of Democratic debate over the party’s future

Hard-fought New Jersey election kicks off a year of Democratic debate over the party’s future

The race to fill a vacant, safely blue House seat in New Jersey has set off an expensive competition between different interest groups, political figures and cash-flush super PACs to shape the future of the Democratic Party this year — one district at a time. The Democratic primary to succeed Gov. Mikie Sherrill in Congress has attracted 11 candidates from across the ideological spectrum and various levels of politics, including an ex-lieutenant governor, a former congressman, a grassroots activist and a handful of local politicians. It has also seen nearly $6 million of spending from outside groups and numerous endorsements from prominent figures with an interest in who will next represent this slice of North Jersey. The primary winner could potentially represent this district, which Kamala Harris carried by 9 points in 2024, for as long as they want, giving power to one faction or another of the Democratic caucus in the House. The winner could eventually run for higher office in the future, too, like Sherrill. The same dynamics are set to shape dozens …

Politics Home | Kemi Badenoch Kicks Robert Jenrick Out Of Tory Party Over Alleged Plan To Defect

Politics Home | Kemi Badenoch Kicks Robert Jenrick Out Of Tory Party Over Alleged Plan To Defect

2 min read1 hr Kemi Badenoch has sacked her shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick, removed the whip and suspended his membership of the Conservative Party “with immediate effect”. In a post on X on Thursday, Tory leader Badenoch said she had been presented with “clear, irrefutable evidence” that Jenrick was “plotting in secret to defect in a way designed to be as damaging as possible to his Shadow Cabinet colleagues and the wider Conservative Party”. There has been heavy speculation that Jenrick could join Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, which he has previously denied. Badenoch added: “The British public are tired of political psychodrama and so am I. “They saw too much of it in the last government, they’re seeing too much of it in THIS government. I will not repeat those mistakes.” Badenoch beat Jenrick in the contest to replace Rishi Sunak as Conservative Party leader and leader of the opposition in October 2024. Speaking at a press conference shortly after Badenoch’s announcement, Farage confirmed that he had held “conversations” with Jenrick, but denied that a defection …
