Barbie Ferreira on ‘Faces of Death,’ ‘Mile End Kicks’ and the Internet

Barbie Ferreira on ‘Faces of Death,’ ‘Mile End Kicks’ and the Internet

Barbie Ferreira doesn’t really have a dream role. “[For me], that’s anything that’s well written and with a director that I really like,” the 29-year-old actress tells The Hollywood Reporter on Zoom. She admits she’s not so concerned with genre, evidenced quite well by the two projects she’s a part of releasing this month — the horror remake Faces of Death and the Canadian indie Mile End Kicks. “I’m really open to so much stuff,” she explains. The actress, who shot to fame on HBO’s Euphoria, found herself particularly drawn to the “indie sleaze” nature of Mile End Kicks. Set in 2011 Montreal — yes, Ferreira explains, they are calling it a period piece — she’s found parallels to her teen years modeling and going out in Brooklyn. Now, almost 30, Ferreira continues to choose projects carefully. She emphasizes that her happiness is most important to her. “I always had this dream of being a working actor that has a normal life. I can still teeter on that,” she says. “I feel bad for pop stars …

Russia kicks out British diplomat Moscow accused of spying | UK News

Russia kicks out British diplomat Moscow accused of spying | UK News

Russia has kicked out a British diplomat that Moscow has accused of spying. The diplomat had his accreditation revoked and was told to leave the country in two weeks. The FSB, Russia’s security service, claimed the British diplomat “provided false information about himself”. Moscow also accused him of attempting to gather information about the Russian economy during informal meetings. The FSB, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said it had detected an “undeclared intelligence presence”. It added the diplomat was “carrying out intelligence and subversive activities that threaten the security of the Russian Federation”, according to Russian media reports. In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Affairs said Danae Dholakia, the British Chargé d’Affaires in Russia, was summoned over the claims that a diplomat had “knowingly provided false information about himself when applying for entry into our country”. The statement read: “Russian authorities also received information indicating that this employee belonged to the British intelligence services and identified evidence of his involvement in subversive intelligence work in our country.” It continued: “The British side …

An interfaith vigil kicks off NYC’s ‘No Kings’ march

An interfaith vigil kicks off NYC’s ‘No Kings’ march

NEW YORK (RNS) — Hundreds gathered at Central Park’s Columbus Circle entrance on Saturday morning (March 28) for an interfaith vigil ahead of New York City’s “No Kings” march to protest the Trump administration.  The Rev. Paul Raushenbush, president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance, kicked off the event by noting the importance of faith communities taking a place within the “No Kings” movement. “Faithful people from all different backgrounds have to show up for ‘No Kings’ because authoritarians and would-be kings … their main pillar is often religious folks who want to prop up autocracy so they have proximity to power and impose their idea on what faith is on all the rest of us,” he told the crowd gathered in front of the USS Maine National Monument. In his hands, Raushenbush held a sign that read “Yes to religious freedom for all” and “Christian Nationalism” crossed out. Saturday was the third edition of the No Kings rally and drew millions across the country, and in Europe, for protests in more than 3,500 cities, including …

Minnesota kicks off legal battle to hold ICE shooters accountable

Minnesota kicks off legal battle to hold ICE shooters accountable

They asked nicely at first. After an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three who’d recently moved to Minneapolis, local law enforcement officials requested a partnership with the federal government to investigate the case, as they’d done in past shootings involving federal agents. When the Trump administration refused to cooperate, Minnesota prosecutors ratcheted up their efforts. They sent a series of strongly worded legal letters demanding evidence in the Good shooting as well as the shootings of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan immigrant who was wounded a week after Good was shot, and Alex Pretti, who was killed on Jan. 24. Still, the administration rebuffed the requests. This week, prosecutors from Hennepin County and the state of Minnesota took the next step to force the Trump administration’s hand. They filed a federal lawsuit against the departments of Homeland Security and Justice over the evidence in the shootings, an action that Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, whose jurisdiction covers Minneapolis, characterized as “unprecedented in American history.” The Trump …

I tried Lidl’s new carbon plate running trainers — are the £40 kicks actually any good?

I tried Lidl’s new carbon plate running trainers — are the £40 kicks actually any good?

As any runner knows, getting the right pair of trainers is a fine art — one that often involves wince-inducing words like ‘pronate’, ‘gait’ and ‘expensive’. Most pairs of good running shoes will set you back at least £200, if not more. For regular pavement-pounders, they’re a necessary part of the lifestyle; not only are they more technologically advanced than ever, but a decent set of trainers will help keep you injury-free. As someone who has ended up with long-term knee problems from running in cheap trainers (RIP, my meniscus), the news that Lidl has launched its own £40 version of Nike’s celebrated Vaporfly was enough to ring a couple of alarm bells. Abha Shah In the name of journalism (and curiosity), I also agreed to test them out. The lure was too strong: after all, if Lidl’s pair turned out to be any good, they could spare me spending upwards of £150 every six months on a new pair of Asics. Enter: the Crivit CarbonLite 1.0. As the name suggests, it’s a carbon-plated running …

Conan O’Brien kicks off Oscars on ‘serious’ note: ‘These are very chaotic, frightening times’

Conan O’Brien kicks off Oscars on ‘serious’ note: ‘These are very chaotic, frightening times’

Amid the one-liners, Conan O’Brien is striking a serious tone during his Academy Awards monologue, saying the annual Hollywood awards show brings some optimism in these “chaotic times.” “Tonight is an international event,” O’Brien said, following some rapid-fire jokes, as he kicked off the 98th Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday. “If I can be… Source link

Apple Kicks Off 50th Anniversary With Surprise Alicia Keys Concert in New York

Apple Kicks Off 50th Anniversary With Surprise Alicia Keys Concert in New York

Apple mysteriously shut down its Grand Central Terminal store in New York City today, and it turns out it was for an impromptu Alicia Keys concert to celebrate Apple’s upcoming 50th anniversary. Apple quietly invited select YouTubers and members of the media (including MacRumors) to the store location, but kept the performer secret until Alicia Keys took the stage. Preparations for the concert started yesterday, with Apple setting up a stage, audio equipment, and lights, complete with Keys’ signature pink piano. Apple CEO Tim Cook, marketing chief Greg Joswiak, retail head Deirdre O’Brien, and hardware engineering boss John Ternus were at the Grand Central Terminal location for the concert. Members of the public that are in the area are also able to watch the performance. Alicia Keys has a history with Apple, and has performed at Apple events several times in the past. In September 2016, she was at the Apple Music Festival 10 in London, and she sang at the NYC Holiday Masquerade Ball in December 2022 as part of Apple’s live concert series. …

Daylight Saving Time Kicks Off on Sunday. Here’s How to Get Ready

Daylight Saving Time Kicks Off on Sunday. Here’s How to Get Ready

More daylight is just days away. This weekend, clocks will move forward by an hour, and you’ll notice longer daylight in the evenings. Yes, we’ll have more time in the sun, but the change comes with disruptions in sleep patterns and a shift in our circadian rhythm, which is basically our body’s internal clock. And not all experts are in favor of this change continuing. When does daylight saving time start?  Daylight saving time starts Sunday at 2 a.m. local time. The start of DST usually means you’ll “spring forward.” You’ll lose an hour of sleep, but gain longer periods of daylight in the evening. On the first Sunday of November at 2 a.m. local time, you’ll “fall back” and gain an hour of sleep, but you’ll also deal with darker evenings.  Daylight Saving vs. Standard Time  The difference between daylight saving time and standard time boils down to how you adjust your clock for more or less daylight.  We’re wrapping up standard time, which is the local time in your time zone. On Sunday, …
