Man ‘tried to break into London’s Israeli embassy armed with two knives’, court hears | UK News

A man who twice entered the UK by small boat tried to break into the Israeli embassy in London with two knives to “exact revenge” for the killing of children in Gaza, a court heard. Kuwait-born Abdullah Albadri is accused of planning a terror attack when he took weapons to the consulate while wearing a red and white scarf wrapped around his head and face. The 34-year-old is said to have climbed an 8ft (2.4m) fence in a bid to enter the embassy grounds in Palace Green, Kensington, west London, on 28 April last year. A trial at the Old Bailey on Wednesday heard that Albadri was “almost successful in his attempt to scale the fence”, but armed diplomatic protection officers reached up and grabbed him. This was said to be a reference to the Israeli war in Gaza, …

Quadcopter Drone Caught Trying to Deliver Hunting Knives to Inmates in Prison

Quadcopter Drone Caught Trying to Deliver Hunting Knives to Inmates in Prison

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Last weekend, a neon-green quadcopter drone released a mysterious package into a New York state prison, which was promptly confiscated by corrections officers. According to the Associated Press, the bundle was massive — containing, among other goodies, two nearly eight-inch hunting knives. That’s not all. The payload also held a Motorola phone, bandanas, electric hair trimmers — commonly fashioned into tattoo guns — a few sheets of paper soaked in an unknown substance, and at least 13 balloons stuffed with weed. The drone was also recovered by officers. Going off pictures released by New York state investigators, the smugglers used an Xpece One fishing drone, a $2,299 quadcopter meant to hold up to seven pounds of bait. According to New York corrections commissioner Daniel Martuscello, the state is aware of nearly 12 other drone dead-drops, something he calls an “evolving but imminent threat.” Over the past few years, drones have become an incredibly popular choice among folks looking …

‘Buy this, and you’ll be set for life’: the best (and worst) chef’s knives – tested | Food

A great chef’s knife is less a tool and more an extension of the person holding it. In the kitchen, your knife effectively becomes your right (or left) hand. Balance equals control; good steel spells confidence and longevity; a sharp edge means ease. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. I’ve put a handful of knives through the only trials that matter: shallots diced to translucence, tomatoes sliced gossamer thin, herbs chiffonaded to perfume. I’m looking past marketing into geometry, materials, grind and ultimately how each knife feels – at minute one and hour 10. Does it bite eagerly, or wedge and bruise? How does it feel in your hand – is it perfectly balanced or too blade-heavy? Does it sing on the board, or thud? Will this knife need lots of TLC, or will it look after itself? Here are my sharp, unsentimental findings on performance, longevity, comfort and value, so you know exactly where to spend your cash. At a glance …

‘I stabbed a teenager in the neck – here’s my message for people who carry knives’ | UK News

‘I stabbed a teenager in the neck – here’s my message for people who carry knives’ | UK News

Resting on young shoulders, a white coffin is carried through a youth centre in southeast London. The scene looks like a funeral. That is the intention – but it is something else entirely. Inside the coffin is a large sculpture: a bloodied knife carved with the skyline of London. The imagery is stark. Image: This is a carefully constructed act, confronting a real and ongoing issue A group gathers around the coffin to take it in. Some of them are in tears. It forms part of a new anti-knife crime project titled Re-claim, created by multimedia artist Eugene Ankomah and designed to shine a light on teenagers “lost to the streets”. Mr Ankomah says the reaction from some visitors has been emotional. Image: Eugene Ankomah believes his artwork can help play a part in reducing knife crime “I have had young people who have carried knives in the past come into this venue, and some of them have broken down crying,” he said. “That’s what I want. I want them to have a change of …

Man ‘chased by two people carrying knives’ near UK school | UK | News

Police have launched a probe into “an altercation” near a school and nursery in Nottingham. Officers were called to Hillington Rise near Glade Hill Primary and Nursery School at around 3pm on January 30. They said a man in his 20s, who was unharmed, was chased by two men “charrying knives”. Nottinghamshire Police said they are taking the incident “extremely seriously” as they released images of the men they wish to speak to as part of their investigation. A team of detectives have made a number of inquiries to trace those responsible and would like to speak to the men in these images, the force said. They also urged any witnesses or people with footage of the incident, and the moments leading up to it, to come forward. Detective Inspector Lisa Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are treating this matter extremely seriously and our investigation is progressing at speed. “It is vital we trace the two men in these images as we believe they will be able to assist our inquiries. “We appreciate their faces are …

There’s 1 common kitchen utensil you should never put in dishwasher | UK | News

Don’t make this common mistake (stock) (Image: Getty) It’s a common mistake to make when cleaning up in the kitchen, but it’s easy to prevent. Which? claims you could be slowly destroying your kitchen knives by putting them in the dishwasher. Rather than allowing them to slam against other cutlery in the dishwasher, you should instead wash them by hand with warm, soapy water. However, this alone isn’t enough to stop them from spoiling, as you also need to dry them with a soft cloth as soon as they’ve been washed to prevent rusting. In a TikTok video, Which? said: “Step away from the dishwasher. It might be convenient, but it is a disaster zone for sharp blades. “The high heat can warp handles, while water pressure knocks the blade against other cutlery. This causes tiny chips that dull the edge instantly.” READ MORE: I unblocked my drain overnight with powerful miracle item cleaner swears by @whichuk Sick and tired of cooking with blunt kitchen knives? Chopping an onion? Sharp knives can keep its juice out of your eyes

Chopping an onion? Sharp knives can keep its juice out of your eyes

Crying over chopped onions could be a thing of the past. Slicing with sharper blades and slower cuts can eliminate those painful tears, a new study finds. A chemical formed from onion juice (propanethial S-oxide) triggers those tears. Slicing the onion ruptures its cells, triggering a chemical reaction that forms this compound. Chopping can fling tiny droplets of it into the air. If they bind to sensory nerves in a cook’s eyes, they’ll cause that well-known stinging — and tears.  But slicing onions slowly with a sharpened knife cuts the number of tear-inducing droplets that were spewed. This technique could offer serious relief to everyday cooks. It also could shed light on how pathogens spread. The researchers shared their findings on Oct. 21 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “This is something everybody’s dealing with,” says physicist Navid Hooshanginejad. He now works at SharkNinja, a product-design company in Needham, Mass. “Now we can also explain and understand it better fundamentally.” High-speed cameras captured droplets flying from onions as they were sliced, allowing researchers …
