Man Utd and Amorim cannot go on like this after latest crisis

Man Utd and Amorim cannot go on like this after latest crisis

Ruben Amorim says the loss of Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo has decimated Manchester United’s creativity. Fernandes is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury while Mbeumo and Amad are away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon and Ivory Coast respectively. The trio have together created 105 chances for United in the Premier League this season, which is almost as many chances (122) as the rest of the team have created combined. United survived sustained second half pressure to beat Newcastle on Boxing Day but could only draw 1-1 to bottom club Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday when they looked well short of ideas going forward.  With Mason Mount also out now after being substituted at half-time against Newcastle, Amorim says United have lost the vast majority of their creativity.  “I don’t like to talk about that [the lack of depth], it sounds like an excuse,” the United manager said ahead of the trip to Elland Road to face Leeds on Sunday. “[But] it was bad luck to lose Amad, Bryan, …

Are you watching, Thomas Tuchel? Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s scoring streak continues

Sunderland’s ability to cope without several key players owing to the Africa Cup of Nations faces another test this afternoon as they host a resurgent Leeds United. Daniel Farke’s team’s improvement since they switched to a 5-3-2 at half-time of their game at Manchester City has been remarkable, with home wins over Chelsea and Crystal Palace and creditable draws against Brentford and Liverpool. West Ham’s dismal defeat by Fulham yesterday means Leeds have the chance to pull nine points clear of the relegation zone with a win. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit and scoring again, in partnership up front with Noah Okafor, while Ethan Ampadu is pulling the strings in midfield. Farke has described Ampadu as one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders. The German said: “He’s wearing the captain’s armband, but each month he’s fulfilling this role even better because for a captain he’s still quite young and I’ve always said there’s even more to come. “But so far I would say he is one of the best midfielders in this league in this …

Dominic Calvert-Lewin challenged to become ‘Leeds hero’ as double sets up win over Crystal Palace

Good evening, and welcome to live coverage of Leeds United vs Crystal Palace from the Premier League, as Daniel Farke’s side aim to pull further away from the relegation zone while the visitors look to keep pace in the race for Champions League football. Leeds are currently 17th in the table, three points ahead of West Ham United, and after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were beaten by Manchester City earlier today, the Yorkshire side have the chance to double their cushion above the drop zone this evening. Farke’s future at Elland Road was in doubt around this time last month, with his side losing five games in six, but a switch to a back five at half-time against Manchester City at the end of November has been the catalyst for a change in fortunes for the German. It was only Phil Foden’s stoppage-time winner that denied Leeds a point at the Etihad after a spirited second-half comeback, and they have since taken five points from games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Brentford. Crystal Palace make the …
