Armed police officers left bag of guns outside Sadiq Khan’s home | UK News

Armed police officers guarding London mayor Sadiq Khan left a bag of guns outside his home, it has emerged. Five people have now been temporarily suspended from frontline duties while an investigation takes place. A Heckler & Koch submachine gun, a Glock pistol, a Taser and ammunition were reportedly inside the bag. The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards has confirmed it is reviewing what happened. In a statement, it said: “A member of the public called police after finding a bag containing Met-issued firearms and a Taser on a street in south London. “Within seven minutes of the call to police, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the items. “At this stage it is believed the bag was misplaced by on-duty officers a short time before the member of the public located it.” More on Metropolitan Police The incident happened at about 9.40pm on Tuesday. There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

There’s one Lord of the Rings tale left to tell, but Hollywood is too scared

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien are some of the most beloved books of the past century, and basically responsible for launching the high fantasy genre as we still know it. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is celebrated to this day, but every attempt to bring Tolkien’s world to the screen since then has stumbled. The Hobbit movie trilogy, while profitable, stretched out a short, charming book far too thin, and 2024’s animated feature The War of the Rohirrim made so few waves this may be the first you’re hearing about it. Meanwhile, Prime Video’s Rings of Power TV show has been all of fine, and this franchise deserves better than fine. (Prime Video would have been better off keeping their other, superior high fantasy show.) As it happens, there is a way out of this quagmire, but it feels like a long shot. The problem with modern Lord of the Rings movies Can I interest you in reheated lembas bread? There are currently two Lord …

‘It has been traumatic’: the Cornwall landmark left battered by Storm Goretti | Cornwall

Three months after Storm Goretti battered St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, the signs of the storm’s power are still evident in the scars left by uprooted trees, piles of logs and the shaking of heads from islanders who have lived there for decades and never seen the like. “It really was something,” said Jack Beesley, a senior gardener. “We were shocked the morning after when we saw what had happened. We had been caring for these trees for years and to see so many of them down was very sad. We’ve worked hard to get the place ready for the Easter visitors but it will still be a month or more until we’re back straight.” Once they are sorted, the gardening team will pause to work out what to do next after losing 80% of the Cornish tidal island’s tree cover to the 100mph winds. Replanting trees such as Monterey pines, which had grown to the height of a four-storey building, may not be wise given the threat of more frequent storms because of the …

Tesla confirms Model S and Model X production is over — only ~600 left

Tesla confirms Model S and Model X production is over — only ~600 left

Elon Musk confirmed today that Tesla has stopped producing the Model S and Model X. Custom orders are no longer accepted, and only about 600 vehicles remain in inventory worldwide. The CEO shared a throwback photo from the original Model S production launch at the Fremont factory in June 2012, writing on X: “Custom orders of the Tesla Model S & X have come to an end. All that’s left are some in inventory. We will have an official ceremony to mark the ending of an era. I love those cars.” A 14-year run comes to an end The writing has been on the wall for months. Musk first announced the end of Model S and X production during Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call in January, describing it as an “honorable discharge” for the two vehicles. At the time, he urged interested buyers to order while they still could: “If you’re interested in buying a Model S and X, now would be the time to order it.” As we reported at the time, Musk’s decision …

There is no one left to sell Trump’s war

There is no one left to sell Trump’s war

Tonight, on April Fools’ Day — the first night of Passover, with the bond markets closing early tomorrow ahead of Good Friday — Donald Trump will finally address the American people about the war he started with Israel in Iran. It has taken him more than a month to do so.  The administration seems to believe that if it can just find the right messenger or the right primetime moment, the narrative for war will click into place. But the timing of Trump’s address, after weeks of deflection and delay, dropped into a narrow window between market closures, feels revealing. Trump’s war in Iran is built on so many contradictions that MAGA’s disciplined propaganda machine of administration officials, media outlets like Fox News, podcasters and influencers is starting to crack under the strain. For weeks the president has tried to outsource the job of selling the war to the American people, first to the Pentagon, as former Fox News anchor turned Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was supposed to be the perfect vessel for this …

‘As soon as I left the first session I felt taller’: is reformer pilates as amazing – or awful – as they say? | Health & wellbeing

‘As soon as I left the first session I felt taller’: is reformer pilates as amazing – or awful – as they say? | Health & wellbeing

I have noticed something new in my London neighbourhood. Amid the sea of nail salons, vape shops and purveyors of fried chicken, sleek, opaque-fronted premises are popping up everywhere. There are several within 15 minutes of my home. At weekends, you can spot clusters of devotees heading to these mysterious, vaguely aspirational temples of self-care, AKA reformer pilates studios. Many of these devotees conform to an aesthetic popularised on TikTok via hashtags such as #pilatesprincess. There is definitely a uniform: pink athleisure, Rhode phone cases and oversized pastel-coloured Stanley tumblers, jokingly referenced on Instagram as “emotional support” bottles. It is a trend that prompted New York magazine to run an article under the headline “Why Pilates Keeps Pissing People Off”: the workout has become inseparable from a very strict idea of womanhood. Whatever the truth of that, it is certainly not putting people off. Pilates has occupied the top slot around the world for three consecutive years on fitness booking app ClassPass, which reported that bookings in 2025 were up 66% year on year. This …

I wore Meta’s smartglasses for a month – and it left me feeling like a creep | AI (artificial intelligence)

I wore Meta’s smartglasses for a month – and it left me feeling like a creep | AI (artificial intelligence)

Lately, I’ve been hearing Judi Dench’s voice in my head. She tells me tomorrow’s forecast, when to turn right, that there’s been another message in my group chat. Day or night, Dame Judi is eager to assist. When I ask the eight-time Academy Award nominee what I’m looking at, she answers: a residential area, a person in a pub, daffodils. “They are a bright yellow colour and are often associated with spring.” This isn’t a delusion. This is, apparently, progress. I am test-driving Meta’s smartglasses and Dench voices its integrated AI assistant: “Here to chat, answer questions, create images and provide advice and inspiration,” said “Judi” when I selected her over the actors John Cena and Kristen Bell. “Shall we begin?” Over the next decade, predicts the Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, smartglasses will gradually become “the main way we do computing”, fulfilling many of the same functions as smartphones – taking photos, playing music, making calls, giving directions. For people who wear glasses, Zuckerberg has suggested, the upgrade is a no-brainer, bundling more features into …

Viewers left uneasy over BBC’s ‘sensitive’ 2-part factual drama about Sarah Everard

Viewers left uneasy over BBC’s ‘sensitive’ 2-part factual drama about Sarah Everard

TV viewers have been left feeling uneasy over the BBC‘s latest announcement that a two-part factual drama will portray the events surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard. Sarah was abducted, raped and murdered by Wayne Couzens, a serving member of the Metropolitan Police, as she walked home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on 3 March 2021. News of Sarah’s death sparked a national outcry, with many taking to the streets to protest institutional misogyny and failings within policing, as well as to call for greater awareness around women’s safety. The case remains an extremely sensitive subject, leaving some viewers questioning the necessity of a factual drama so soon after the events. The series is written by BAFTA-winning Jeff Pope, who has created other factual dramas based on real-life cases including Little Boy Blue, Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and A Confession. According to the BBC, the drama will be handled with “sensitivity and respect”, and the production team has been in contact with Sarah’s family. © Everard family & …
