Amazon’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Feels Stuck Already

Amazon’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Feels Stuck Already

If you think of Elle Woods as a singular (albeit fictional) individual existing within a singular (albeit fictional) continuity, Amazon’s new Legally Blonde prequel defies all narrative logic. The entire premise of the earlier film was that this California girl arrives at Harvard oblivious to life beyond boys, clothes and sorority sisterhood; Elle’s reveal that she’d previously spent her teen years amid the grunge rockers and activists of Seattle is a character inconsistency so gaping it’d require a Days of Our Lives-level bout of amnesia to fill it. Elle The Bottom Line A for effort, B minus for execution. Airdate: Wednesday, July 1 (Prime Video)Cast: Lexi Minetree, June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac LookerDeveloped by: Laura Kittrell But if, on the other hand, you think of Elle Woods as an endlessly rebootable franchise IP à la James Bond or Superman, and this latest adventure as a loose re-adaptation of Laura Brown’s source novel rather than an expansion of it, Elle makes perfect sense from a business standpoint — …

Reese Witherspoon’s Son Recreates His Father Ryan Phillippe’s Look at Legally Blonde Prequel Premiere

The actor taking up Witherspoon’s mantle also paid her a lovely fashion tribute: 25-year-old Lexi Minetree promoted Elle on The Tonight Show in a ruched pink dress with black lace by Marc Jacobs that Witherspoon herself wore in 2001. On the same show, a few days later, the original Elle Woods revealed that she had kept all the outfits from her character’s very pink wardrobe. Naturally, Witherspoon invited Minetree to dig through her archives to choose promo looks with Minetree’s stylist. Witherspoon said the stylist, who happens to be one of the Oscar winner’s longtime friends, asked her if she still had any dresses from that time. “I have all the wardrobe in storage, so I sent her as many dresses as they wanted,” Witherspoon recalled on The Tonight Show. “I said, ‘choose any dresses that you want for her.’ And she put it on and it fit perfectly. It’s like Cinderella’s slipper! She was meant to be Elle Woods!” Lexi Minetree on June 17 in New York. Aeon Lexi Minetree on June 17 in …

‘Legally Blonde’ Stars Reunite After 25 Years Ahead of ‘Elle’ Series

‘Legally Blonde’ Stars Reunite After 25 Years Ahead of ‘Elle’ Series

In celebration of new Prime Video series Elle, which follows a high school version of Elle Woods, the cast of Legally Blonde publicly reunited over the weekend for the first time since the film’s release 25 years ago. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, Ali Larter, Matthew Davis and Victor Garber stepped out at “Elle World,” an immersive fan event that took over Manhattan’s Hall des Lumières on Saturday. Along with posing for photos together and with the new Elle cast — which sees newcomer Lexi Minetree taking over Witherspoon’s iconic role — the original stars also sat down for a conversation moderated by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “When I walked in and I saw this moment, it just felt like it was galvanizing how I felt about playing this character — I’m gonna cry,” Witherspoon told the crowd as she held back tears. “Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life, just because people come up to me and they tell me stories about how they go to law school …

John Oliver Has a Gripe With Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde

John Oliver Has a Gripe With Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde

John Oliver aired a years-long grievance he evidently has with Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde — yes, you read that right — on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight. The HBO host’s main segment focused on the Supreme Court, specifically something called shadow dockets. “The Court has been repeatedly jumping into ongoing cases to say, ‘You know what, while this works its way through the courts, Trump should get to do the thing that he wants to do anyway,’” Oliver explained. “It’s basically a football referee saying, ‘Pending a final ruling on the legality of the quarterback having a gun, I’m just gonna stand back and see where he’s going with this.’” That’s where the shadow docket comes in, Oliver noted, adding that to understand what that is, viewers should be reminded how the Supreme Court decides cases. Oliver then showed a CNN clip where the reporter explained the process, staring out by saying, “When you think of a Supreme Court case, you’re thinking of a case on the merits docket.”  The reporter then explained how …
