Wetherspoon confirms it’s slashing prices at 800 pubs | UK | News

A standard children’s meal at the chain will now cost £5.03 – a £0.72 reduction from the previous price of £5.75. The nationwide scheme, announced in May by the Chancellor, reduces VAT from 20% to 5% on family-focused activities and dining, running from June 26 to September 1. Wetherspoons joins numerous major retailers from across the hospitality and entertainment sectors participating in the cost-cutting programme, which aims to help ease the cost of living during the school holidays. McDonald’s is among the high street names embracing the tax reduction, with Happy Meals dropping 27% to just £2.99 across all restaurants. Fast food rival KFC has similarly signed up to the Government scheme, offering families additional options for cheaper dining out. Theme parks and attractions are also delivering savings under the scheme, with Merlin Entertainment reducing prices across its 20 venues. Advance tickets for both Alton Towers and Legoland have fallen from £34 to £29.75 following the adjustment. I tried Lego’s new ‘Smart Brick’ set for release in 2026– children will love it, adults will hate it

The Smart Brick uses various light and sound sensors, including accelerometers for detecting orientation when the pieces are moved about, as well as a miniature speaker for sound. The ‘smart tags’ tell the Smart Brick what it should do, providing appropriate light or sound, with multiple Smart Bricks interacting during play. The tags communicate with the brick or Smart Minifigure using similar technology to contactless payments on your smartphone.  For example, the new Lego Star Wars sets are designed for one-on-one battles, with lightsaber sound effects (sadly, the saber blades don’t light up), starfighter engines roaring to life and laser cannons firing. Parents will be pleased to hear that the Smart Brick sounds aren’t too loud, nor too grating. During my demo session, I built a helicopter out of regular Lego bricks. I placed the Smart Brick on top of a special tile with a helicopter logo. The Smart Brick then ‘knew’ that I had built a helicopter and it reacted to my actions during play.
